Buddies? Any out there for me?

well I guess I'll start the introductions...

hi everyone, my name is kate I'm 24 and I am in school for holistic healthcare!
lets see something about me....hmmm... I've lived a very eccentric life, yet I think its kinda boring. I've lived in Washington, Alaska, california, Alabama, and now Tennessee. I was in a car accident when I was 18 where I stopped breathing and had no pulse. I'm alive now though so thats all that matters right?:) I had a breast re-duction when I was 19 and would do it again if i needed to. I'm very open about it because it was the single best thing I've ever done for myself, and want every woman who has thought about it to know that it is absoloutley worth it!(if you have questions please feel free to ask me)
I found friends here in this forum who help me stay motivated(even though its only been a week!:D) and I am engaged to a wonderful man!

okay so who's next?.....

This is for 2Cute2BeSoUgly It might be worthwhile working out your BMR basic metabolic rate as to regards to how much you should be eating here is a site that does it for you

Might give you some guidance if anything. Just to add some more eating a low GI diet in case anyone is interested.

MarkC, thanks for the site to go to. I checked it out and found out that I need 2252 calories to maintain my weight and I can go down to, but not under, 1200 calories a day in order to lose weight. See i've never been one to count calories but I think it might be time that I start. At least until I get a good grasp on what I should be eating in a day.

Kate, thanks for the tips. I never knew they made pumpkin in a can. I will have to look for that. I love pumpkin and applesauce is yummy too so I don't see why they wouldn't be good together. I'm totally with you on the cottage cheese and yogurt thing. I do the same thing. I put fruit in mine also.

I've got school most of the day today so i've been getting my food around to take with me. Sooooo it looks like what i'm going to eat today is a chicken breast (plain...ack..lol), a whole can of tuna with two slices of rye bread and one slice of cheese (two half sandwhiches... i'll eat them a few hours apart), a pretty desent size plate of mixed veggies and a medium bowl of fruit. Now, this will be spread out all day long. I normally eat every couple hours. So, I think this is sounding like a better amount of food, right? lol.... i'm such a dork... I can't believe I don't know this stuff. I've got to figure out how to count calories with veggies and fruit. I'm sure I can find it online.

Kate, sounds like you are a pretty interesting person. I have a friend that is majoring in Holistic Health Care. I don't know too much about it myself but it sounds interesting. I've also got a friend, from Michigan, that is working on a cruise ship in Alaska right now. I'd like to go there someday.

Well, i'm off to class soon so I will talk to everyone tomorrow. I will post some info of myself tomorrow when I get more time. Thanks for everyones help.

Jessica

Jessica, on the average a 1/2 cup of veggies is between 30-35 calories and a 1/2 cup of fruit is 40-45...fruit has more because of the sugar and of coarse theres going to be variences in some veggies (avacadoes ect..) are a little higher.. but veggies and fruits arn't necessarily what you should be counting, bad fats, carbs and empty carbs (refined sugars and starches) are more important to watch because they are what is turned into fat if thier not expended.

Sounds like your getting the hang of it though, todays food sounds a little more like what you should be eating!:)

My intake is 1983.6 to maintain my weight so if I cut 7000 out for the week to lose 2lbs a week I'd have to eat 900 calories a day... ummm no thank you. I'll go with 1000-1200 a day, which is what I did when I lost 50lbs the first time.

Awesome, now i know what i should have to lose 2 lb a week. I forgot that 1lb is approx 3500 cals. To lose 2 lb a week i need to have 1039 cals a day. Its time i cranked this diet up a notch. But i thought they recommend nothing below 1200 cals, would 1039 really stop me from losing weight safely?
If thats the case, what if i had 1200-1300 cals a day but made sure i burnt 200-300 cals off to make sure i lose 2 lb a week. If all that makes sense?

Please reply.

I think that they mean if you are active and working out then below 1200 wouldnt be safe to nourish your body. If your not active, then as long as you are eating every few hours and making sure your drinking enough water, below 1200 can be fine. if your doing 1200-1300 and expending those extra calories your fine too. make sense? lol:D

Well the thing is i wasnt active before but i am a lot more active now. I dont know if ive been active long enough to make my cal intake change. Maybe i should have 1200 cals a day and work out so i burn about 300 off the 1200. Dieting is boring as hell, im half way there but now my ginger bread man is tired out and is crawling very slowly to the right now lol (if you get what i mean!)

I have another question. They say you "should" have say 1200 to stay safe. Well what happens if you have 1200 in a day, but you burn all that off on the same day. Is that unsafe, would you lose weight or would it resort to that starvation thing?

!!:p lol:p !!! I'd say your ginger bread man is just dancing in place waiting for you to make up your mind on which direction you want him to go!:D ...

it is VERY difficult to burn that many calories in a day, in fact I dont think you can... but even if you could your body needs some fuel so by burning more than you eat your body will go into starvation mode and start storing what you do eat. how much and how often do you exercise? and its not really how many calories you burn in a day its what kind, say if your eating healthy your burning the stored fat, if your not eating healthy you'll only burn the bad fats your eating, so your body fat-stores stay the same... make sense?:)

I guess it does. I dont have a regular work out plan, im so uneducated on this i dont know what to do!

I'll just tell you some of my problems lol

1. I was going to start weight lifting, but on a weight lifting forum they said you must eat 6 meals a day and have a lot more calories than im having atm to gain muscle. When you first start body building, your muscles grow very fast and to take full advantage of this muscle growth you must eat a lot of calories and carbs etc. So should i start weightlifting yet or not? It would be a complete waste to not take advantage of the quick muscle growth because im not having enough calories.

2. My mum lost 5 stone a few years a go, and has kept it off since. She thinks that if you did eat something with very few calories every hour you wouldnt go into starvation mode and the weight would drop off you, but someone on this forum has already tried that and didnt lose any weight, who is right?

3. I thought if i went on my bike a lot, the muscles in my legs would get bigger and i would be able to go further. On the weight lifting forum they said it would take years to gain muscle that way, where is the logic in that when you are using your legs to power the bike?

4. What do you mean bad fats and good fats? I thought fat is fat, and all fat is bad?

no problem lets start from the beginning...:D

1. to start, muscle burns fat. so if you are weight lifting your burning more fat than if you were just exercising, BUT you should be doing Cardio(exercising to sweat) and weight lifting(building muscle) because as I said before, your muscles burn fat and exercising gets your heart pumping along with sweating to expel the toxins. Drink plenty of water too!:)

2. it is recomended that you eat smaller meals and snacks every few hours, it keeps your metabolism up. Of coarse if you eat higher calorie foods than you have more to burn off. so things like whole grain, fruits, veggies and such (check out the food guide pryamid ) are better sources of calories plus they have the nutrients and vitamins needed to maintain healthy weight loss.

3. I think that the weight loss forum is catring to people who are bigger body builders and such, if you work a muscle it will of coarse grow and become stronger and in turn burn more fat.

4. NO!! that is one myth alot of people believe about fat not all fat is bad fat.. for example nuts and oils like olive oil and sesame are necessary for your body to function, bad fats like Hydrogenated oils(man made) and saturated fats are not healthy. I suggest going to the Food and Nutrtion Information Center

heres another great one Nutrition Facts & Calorie Counter

I hope I've helped a little, and these sites too! I would love to help you familiarize yourself with the healthy ways of eating and weight loss..so ask away:D

How it works with Weight Watchers', is you have so many points (calories) a day you eat (it's about 1200 or so for me). If I do something, such as go for a walk, that gives me one activity point. Which means, if I want/need to have a bit more to eat that day, I can use that point/calories in my day's total. Make sense? So if you are working out, then you can, and should eat a little bit more. Listen to your body; it will tell you if you need more food. You don't want to push it TOO hard.

And Jellykat is right, there are some good fats. Your body needs fat in it's diet in moderation.

Yea it did help, the answer for question 1 suprized me a lot, i didnt no cardio and weight lifting worked "as a team" you could say. Where did you find that out? Does it make you lose weight quicker to weight lift and do cardio?

hi im new but i would like to be there to i9ncourage you and you me so i will tell you my story if you want and you cab tell me yours if you want k?

Ya know what, I feel like a total moron. You were talking the other day about your gingerbread man and afterwards you said "if you know what I mean." I didn't know what you meant...lol. I had noooo idea what your "gingerbread man" could be...lmao. Kate understood what you were talking about, but not ME.... oh nooooooo.... i'm a little slow...lol. It took me awhile to realize that you guys were talking about you TICKER..dah!

EazyE, i've even heard that you should, in one workout, do cardio for a few then lift some weights, then go back to cardio and so on. Something about if you keep switching it up that it tricks your body and you get better results. When I go workout I do cardio for 20-30 minutes then lift weights for 15 minutes then go back to cardio for 10. I should probably switch more often than that but I don't. I'm no expert or anything, just what i've heard.

Where did you hear about that?
Ya u do look kinda dumb now u said that about the ginger bread man lol, joking!

I am in school for Holistic Healthcare, and spent a year of my life doing nothing but research on weight loss, dieting,exercise... ect. I agree with Jessica, when you incorporate both it works your heart and all your other muscles together to burnfat and sweat at the same time.

LOL... Jessica, it's okay about the gingerbread man, although you had me giggling:D how are you doing? did you decide on what gym you wanted to use yet?

Dariqueen, I was on weight watchers for a minute, and think the system is great. I just couldn't use it because I kept giving myself excuses to eat junk food as long as I counted points!lol.. It works for some and not for others. My aunt lost 50 some pounds with it, and I think if you can discipline yourself when it comes to snacks then amen!

So would it make you boost the ammount of fat you could lose in a week, possibly 3 lb instead of 2?

I think it's all relative...just depends on the person. There are general rules to follow, that go according to how the human body "works", but as far as exact results, it will depend on how YOUR body responds to what you're doing. And you mentioned that your mom lost 5st on a certain plan that didn't work for someone else on here. That's case and point. I think each person has to sort of find their own groove and then really stick to it. Me, I'm rubbish at keeping up with exercise regimens, unless I have a workout partner...and a reliable one of those has proven very difficult for me to find. So I've decided that I'm going to start dancing every day for an hour as my workout. Salsa, line dancing, swing dancing, whatever I can do. B/c I enjoy doing that, and I know an hour of doing that will go by extra fast for me. So that's my new plan. :)

Monica
