Hi everyone,

I apologize, but I've notified San that I will be dropping out of the challenge. I've come to find that while it was initially extremely beneficial, it now is a stressor that is making me shy away from fitness/nutrition as a whole. It is actually the prospect of weighing in each week (the part that at first was so motivating) that now freaks me out a bit. I can't make excuses for myself, that's just what I've come to realize. I guess I am not strong enough to handle that right now and for that really I apologize to all of you who have worked so hard only to have me let you down now. :(

You are all wonderful and this team will do wonderfully no matter what.

Best to you all,
Camila

Sorry to see you go, Camila :( But if this is making you feel uncomfortable about weight-loss and fitness, then you're right, you probably shouldn't be doing it. You've been a great teammate, but doing this shouldn't make you shy away from doing what you need to in order to reach your own personal goals. I hope you stay on the forum, though :) It'd be great to read how you're doing.

Blah! I would have had full points, but the scale was giving me this irresistibly beckoning look this morning :(

Camila - I'm so sorry to see you go. If it is simply the weekly weighing that is making you feel stressed - stay in our team and we will forego the weight loss points for you for the challenge. Leave the weight field blank and fill in the exercise, water drinking and any bonus points that you care to do. Frankly - some of us (especially me) get such little weight loss for hard work - that we contribute next to nothing to our team with the weight loss element. When you are on track you work so hard - that I am pretty sure that you will end up with among the best points achieved - even with no more weight loss points than you have already achieved.

While we will all find that the mini bonuses include things that we do not do (for me the fruit juice) - the majority of the things set are things that we do (or at least try to do - or know that we ought to do)... The challenge is an arena where we discuss the possible merits of doing things... For instance - last weeks' discussions on jumping jacks led to a discussion of different versions of the exercise and some people with arm issues, leg joint issues or severe weight problems learnt of methods of doing this form of exercise that they did not realise. We all benefit if we broaden our knowledge of exercises that are available to us.

I have long known that all expert advice says that we should only weigh once a week. I am one of the longest established daily weighers on the forum. The weigh every day club history contains vast records of my weighings between 2007 and 2009. I have been weighing every day since the start of January - only not posting in "weigh every day" because I have been disheartened at the lack of progress. I have actually quite enjoyed the liberation of not feeling like I ought to be weighing every day. On Sunday I actually went high sodium on purpose as I knew that I would try not to be weighing until Saturday and would probably be able to negate the sodium content of my food before Saturday with all the water that I am drinking. I therefore replaced one of my standard yoghurt and fruit meals (my lunch) and had smoked salmon with a little salad for a change. I know that the salmon would take me high sodium and normally shy away from having it even though I know that I like it and the protein and omega-3 content is healthy at a good calorie level and I enjoy it. Yet again yesterday - a lady at my aerobics class (who has been off for the last two or three weeks) commented that I have lost a lot of weight since she last saw me... I havent lost a pound in that time (but am convinced that I have been making muscle)... It can be good for us to take the focus away from the scales for a short while. The scales do not show everything...

While many of us are apt to resort to popping a package in a microwave to produce a meal - we know that many of them are full of additives that really do not help towards a healthy diet. The increase of popularity of such meals goes hand in hand with the decrease in basic cooking skills and the way that such things as trans fats have entered our diet.

Other bonuses from previous weeks have brought other aspects to mind. The benefits of organic produce for instance... While I must admit that I begrudge paying the extra money for such things - and feel aware that they are not lower in calories or have an otherwise different nutritional profile than non-organic equivalents - I have to admit that organic foods are less likely to include additives from the soil which can all give additional work to our liver to clean up. Even the "drink no calories" week where I dropped some points - prompted me to have extra plain water than I had been doing. I had been having some flavoured water - but had less that week as I wanted the points... The calorie saving is pretty negligible - but there is a financial benefit in drinking tap water instead of flavoured water. I am still having less flavoured water than had been the case...

The bottom line is that we are sorry to see you go. If you change your mind - I am sure that San would be happy for you to come back to us.

If you remain convinced that leaving the challenge is the right thing for you to do - then never think that you have let us down. You have not and could not.

Belinda and Christine - you are both doing brilliantly with the points.

Belinda - I can understand the temptation to hop onto the scales.

Christine - you have had a run of good challenge days since you last posted.

My week is going well.

Max points for Sunday and Monday.

Sorry I didn't update yesterday. My MiL was admitted to the hospital and is having surgery this morning so it's been kind of hectic at home.

Full points yesterday! Did my jumping jacks in two sets of 20 (one first thing in the morning and before bed) and then did an hour of outside walking (during which I discovered my puppy is deathly afraid of the traffic along the main highway because it's a 4-lane instead of a back neighborhood road; I ended up having to carry him...). Didn't weigh and ate stove-cooked food :D I've also been using a liter bottle for my water instead of the smaller 500-591 mL ones. It seems to make drinking the water easier--instead of drinking 6 bottles of water throughout the day, I'm now only having to drink 3. Less intimidating that way.

Gonna start up with my water and part of the jumping jacks now and if it's still sunny when I get finished, I'll do my walking outside again and get it out of the way in case we're not home again this evening.

I see the challenge next week is to be outside for another 30 minutes each day. I was hoping for something new...

Well done for getting max points yesterday.

I can imagine that your life will be hectic. I hope that your MIL is ok.

My MIL is a nightmare - but it was hectic when she was in hospital a couple of years ago... It is much better that we are 300 miles away from her...

Carrying the puppy would be good ST for you - build your muscles as he is just like lifting weights!!!

I find that some heavy exercise helps the water go down... I always manage a litre during a hour of zumba - so it is much easier on zumba days.

LOL - we rarely get what we hope for in challenges - but it can add to the fun and the mystery of what is coming next... They give us something to discuss and when you discuss things you both learn things and you get to know more about new people.. Sometimes it can be healthy to follow someone else's ideas... :willy_nilly:

I once made San eat more vegetables than she had ever heard of in a challenge... LOL I discovered that she didnt eat any veg other than tomatoes so I made her try 5 new fruit / veg every week for about 10 weeks (adding onto an ever growing list)...:willy_nilly::willy_nilly::willy_nilly:

She thought that she didnt like any - but could only remember trying a few which she knew that she didnt like...

Got an hour of walking in between this morning and evening. Also did my jumping jacks all at one time :svengo: No microwaved food, resisted the weight scale calling my name, and am about to finish up the water. I'm going to go ahead and record all points. If somehow I manage not to finish up that last 1/2 L for whatever unforeseeable reason, I'll edit in the morning.

Also, does this new mini-challenge require the time spent outside to be active or can it be spent leisurely?

Belinda - Well done for having another maximum points day. We are really doing brilliantly. This team is going on from strength to strength.

I had a max points Wednesday too. :)

I did my jumping jacks, went out walking and did an hour of zumba. I had all my water. The only thing that went into the microwave was baked beans.

I eat quite a lot of baked beans. They are my main vegetable... I opt for the low sugar low salt ones... Baked beans are high in fibre and high in protein. Unlike when you get protein from meat - you get no fat with it. It also helps to reduce cholesterol which is very important as my husband's family are all disposed towards having high cholesterol (both his thin brothers take tablets for their cholesterol).

I am really quite enjoying not weighing. The weighing was getting me down because it simply has not moved down at all for the entire challenge... It is a bit embarrassing really... On paper it looks like I am not trying... When I tried on my jeans this morning they were so comfortable that I decided to wear them all day (or at least until salsa this evening)... I am in two minds about wearing them for salsa as the teacher sometimes throws in a zumba warm up to amuse the zumba goers (and of course there is an element of cross advertising)... We get the odd salsa lineup in zumba... Loose clothing tends to be best for heavy exercise. I am enjoying sitting here wearing my jeans. I didnt wear them at all last year. I havent worn them since 2011 - when I gained weight during Rod's five operations...
