Weight-Loss What's for Breakfast???

Weight-Loss
High fiber cereals are good for you, but I find that it's not a good idea to eat a lot of fiber right before you go to work. You end up having taking a bathroom break before you even leave the house sometimes.

Wow, that's some extreme sensitivity to fiber right there! :D

I like a couple of the high fiber, low fat ones like Grape Nuts, mini wheats, and Cracklin oat bran (looks like cat food but tastes good).

OOOHHHH!!!! Cracklin Oat Bran - - - that is the BEST!! SO YUMMY! I forgot about that stuff.

Regarding peanut butter.......it's delicious and has protein, but SOOO high in fat!! Even the "low fat" kind barely makes a difference. I was having maybe a tablespoon on a rice cake, thinking it was a really healthy snack until I read the calorie and fat content. I wanted to cry -- :(
Is there ANYthing like in a health food store with low fat peanut butter?

thx

Cracklin oat bran is good but 225 calories for 3/4 a cup of cereal and 12% fat. Eh I wouldn't recommend it personally. I'm an oatmeal girl myself. Old School plain with some rasins and non-fat milk.

Hah, I'm more like the anti-hero to all dieters!

Everyone should read my diary as an example of what NOT to ear xD

I've had really good experience with the Weetabix cereal for breakfast. I have two biscuits and pour a 1 cup of 2% milk in it ,and it takes less then 300 calories. It's pretty filling, and ( I think) it tastes really good. I generally am running very behind in the morning myself and can still manage it.

I wish half a cup of cereal would fill me up in the mornings...

I make breakfast a "big" meal, usually having a source of protein (I like meat or eggs or meat AND eggs, if I am out for breakfast) with a starch (English muffin) and usually some kind of vegetables (mmm.. broccoli).

I have recently discovered microwavable sandwiches which can be pretty tasty, and they really cut down on the time needed for breakfast, and they fill me up. I'm a bit unsatisfied with the starch content, but it's not outrageous, and the whole thing is only about 400 calories. It's pretty good, as long as I get and stay active for long enough to forget that "it's only a sandwich" and the fact that it's hot food really helps the natural fats and nutrition satisfy my irrational belly.

I find these questions a bit hard as most of u guys are in the US and I dont know if the foods I mention are available to you, but here goes anyway;

Since I started losing weight I have stuck to low-fat low-sugar cereals with high fiber content. I mainly eat weetabix (with a sugar substitute sprinkled on :)) but also "special K" and "all-bran" which I like to have plain with a banana sliced up on.

As somebody has already mentioned though you really have to watch the portion sizes, mine are too big still but that is true of all my meals at the mo.

Also watch what milk you're putting on :) Dont forget the fat content in that too.

Ezekiel cereal and oatmeal

I like oatbran flakes and other whole grain flake cereals from Cascadian Farm or Arrowhead Mills. My favorite is Ezekiel cereal--so hearty that a little bit really fills you up for a while, plus probably the healthiest cereal. These brands may be hard to find depending on where you live, but worth looking for. You also can't go wrong, as others have stated, with oatmeal with a little cinnamon, honey, and fat-free milk. I sometimes add walnuts and raisins, too.

Question about breakfast

So.. a lot of the times, I wake up.. and I know that I should have breakfast, but the thing is, that I'm not hungry at all. My question is, do I still eat breakfast? And doesn't that contradict the fact that we should only eat when we are hungry?

And a question connected to that is, should I still eat even when I'm not hungry, when the total of what I ate for the day was less than 1200 calories?

My resolution is that I won't eat beyond 6:30 PM and so.. if I ate for example 1000 calories for the day, but it's nearing 6:30 pm... and I'm still not hungry, should I still eat a 200 calorie something? thank you! ^_^

Yes you should still eat breakfast then you will find it easier to not eat a lot throughout the day.

All the diets that I have read up on have also suggested, and I have done this, that you eat smaller meals(snacks)throughout the day.

Instead of eating 3 meals a day you should eat 6 smaller ones, then you will find that you will not get as hungry. This has worked for me, I kept a lot of baby carrots around.

Make sure you drink lots of water too.

I agree breakfast is very important. My suggestion is to wait a bit after you wake up, an hour so. If you're still not hungry just eat a little something to get your energy up, then a small snack at midmorning. This will help get your metabolism going and help you to burn more fat during the day. :)

ALWAYS eat breakfast. It kick starts your metabolism for the day etc. Plus all the stuff you always hear about how studies show that people who eat breakfast tend to be thinner than those that don't. Also- it prevents you getting really hungry later on and binging at morning tea/lunch

If you can't handle the idea of actually eating something then have a smoothie-try putting in complan into it for added nutrients.

You SHOULD eat breakfast, but if you really cant stomach it try for just a snack, piece of fruit or toast or something.
And yeah if you go under 1200 cal too often your body may go into starvation mode in which case it will store every piece of food it can and you wont loose anything :)

Though in the long haul it doesnt really matter what you eat and when you eat, just so long as the calories even out over time. But healthy eating is what will see you right once you get the weight off, so may as well start practicing now :)

Eating Breakfast...

I also cannot eat breaky when I wake up right away but I have my java along with a lg bottle of H2o, then I work out (high impact aerobics, weights, eliptical).

By that time I'm ready to eat and my body feels good.

I never get sick or dizzy or weak when exercising since I drink alot of H2o and maybe the java helps me to get going as well.

I agree with everyone else. Breakfast is very important and should be your biggest meal of the day. I am not sure of your stats, but the 1200 or less calories a day concerns me. That sounds way too low and probably the reason why you are rarely hungry.

thank you everyone for replying! I'll make sure to eat breakfast everyday ^_^

and.. why will you not be hungry if you eat less than 1200 calories?? I thought you would get even hungrier.

Well after eating so low below your maintenance calories for so long, yous metabolism slows a great deal. Once it slows, you don't seem to get as hungry as often because it isn't burning too much of what it has for energy. It is basically holding onto everything. Most people that eat that low in calories for so long hit a wall and need to up them SLOWLY quite a bit to repair their metabolism and get it fueled back up to start burning fat. :)

Ok, I'm not trying to lose weight at the moment - I stopped when I hit 148 pounds some three or four months ago. However, I did lose 48 pounds, and so far (even through the holidays and after attempts at 'bulking'!), I haven't gained - my latest weigh in I was 147 pounds.

My advice: breakfast is important, I breakfast like a king. You've just woken up, your blood sugars are low, its the time to take in those carbs! As a bonus, if you opt for a high fibre breakfast, the release is going to be slow - its going to keep you going throughout the morning.

Should you eat even if you are not hungry? Well ... thats up to you, but personally I do, and its working for me. Because I now exercise lots, and have a healthy, balanced staple diet, I seem to eat tonnes. Its probably also because I try to graze rather than gorge - that is, I try to have several moderate sized meals/snacks per day instead of one or two big meals. Sometimes its a struggle to fit in everything - 5 portions of fruit and veg, fibre, water, good fats, and lots of lean protein (strength training) - it doesn't leave much room for treats! Yes, I personally eat when I don't feel hungry. In fact, I don't often feel hungry - not in the sense of hunger pangs - cravings yes, but even when I was losing weight, I didn't let myself feel too much 'hunger'.
