Weight-Loss What's for Breakfast???

Weight-Loss
I chop up onions and green peppers on the weekend and stick them in a ziplock bag and throw them in the freezer. In the morning I throw a handful of it in a non-stick skillet, once it starts to wilt (maybe a minute or two) I throw a scrambled egg in it and cook until done. Then I throw it on a low fat/carb tortilla and I'm good to go with about 140 calories and five minutes.

It takes a total of no more than 5 minutes for me to cook up some yummy scrummy porridge oats. It really does take some beating as a nutritionally perfect breakfast. If I didn't have time for that on occasions - maybe a banana, or a cereal bar or peanut butter or honey on w/m bread.

If I didnt have enough time on a regular basis, I would consider getting up a little earlier - as you said, it is the most important meal of the day!

These are some great ideas! I also commute an hour to/from work so have little time for a good breakfast as well. But I am definately going to have to try some of the ones above! :)

If you have time for cereal, Special K is great, some selections are red berries and vanilla almond, which is to die for. If your really in a rush, Oatmeal to go (bar) is great it fills you up and is 200 callories. Well hope that helps.

Breakfast help!

I have a problem: I don't really have the time to eat breakfast, since I have class first thing in the morning every day (I'm definitely going to schedule differently next semester...) But the thing is, when I do eat breakfast during the day, I get really hungry only a few hours later and end up going over my calorie goal.

On the other hand, when I don't eat breakfast, I could practically go all day without eating, and can fit well within my calorie goal without feeling starving, and with less obsession over what I'm going to eat for the day.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that skipping breakfast seems to work for me, but I've heard so many bad things about doing so that I don't know if it will be worth the quicker weight loss...

Any advice?

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the reason you don't feel hungry if you don't have breakfast is that your metabolism is slooooowing down when you don't eat.

I try to eat something with some protein, a small amount of fat and a bunch of fiber for breakfast, which keeps me fuller, longer, and then pack a small snack to help me make it to lunch. I've also found that if I eat more in the morning, I'm less hungry later in the day. But, ya gotta do what works for you!

Hi Mia,

I think blackwdw hit the nail on the head. If you want to keep your metabolism burning calories and working for you, you need to keep it working.

Eating something small every couple of hours will help your metabolism.

I used to never eat breakfast, and like you go well past lunch time - but then I'd over eat at dinner.

I do think it's important to learn to listen to your body and do what works for you - but that doesn't mean a short term loss is worth long term compromises - you know?

I now can't go more then 3 hours without being hungry - and I'm ok with that, I need to eat!

Good luck!

I naturally do the grazing thing, eating every three hours like people tell you to. The problem is, when I do that, I eat around 300 calories every time, and that puts me way over what I need for the day >< It's like I'm always hungry for a full meal or something.

I am worried about my metabolism slowing down, because I was born pretty lucky in that respect and don't want to end up eating 1000 calories a day my whole life because of one diet fiasco.

I'll go stock up on cereal bars today so that I can at least have a few calories in the morning :)

Thank you, bw and m2m!

What are you eating in the morning? I noticed that when I ate cereal for breakfast I was twice as hungry as I normally was, but when I switched to 2-4 bacon slices, low sodium and relatively low fat, and yogurt then I stopped being so hungry. Although, these aren't the only items. They come to a total of about 250 calories if I have 4 slices, and they're twice as good at filling me up the cereal which is about the same amount. So, that could be half your problem.

Also, I know that I can't snack for more than once a day. I just have to have one snack and cut off right there. My craving is worse in the afternoon, go figure. :p

As for breakfast, it doesn't necessarily slow down your metabolism, but if you eat during breakfast it actually speeds up your metabolism. It gets your body working and after a period of fasting up to 10 hours you probably should be hungry.

Personally, I am guilty of the cardinal sin due to my... sleeping habits. I have to rush around in the mornings to catch up.

But I noticed that when I ate breakfast I actually was a little more alert and ready to go. Personally, I've never had cereal bars before, so I don't know how good they are for you, but I have to have something warm in my stomach now to get me going.

Anyway, I hope that I've helped you considering how much you've helped me! So, please do your best!

There is a new oatmeal out called Steal Cut Oats by QUAKER. I heard about it on Opera by these diet doctors she had on there. It's not as easy to find as regular QUAKER oatmeal but if you can find it... try it. I like it much better than normal oatmeal. The texture is much different. The oats are cut instead of rolled. It doesn't get all mushy like the normal stuff does. The container explains it as "a full, hearty texture and rich, nutty taste". I add cinnamon, splenda and sometimes a 1/2 banana. One serving definetly fills me up. It even fills up my hubby and he's not dieting so if that tells ya anything. The only down fall with the Steal Cut Oats is that it takes about 25 minutes to make. I've figured out how to work it into my routine so it's not a big deal anymore though.

I never feel like eating breakfast (unless a full english is on offer ;)) but I make myself do it to kickstart my metabolism. Breakfast at home is 2 weetabix or all-bran (or something equally as tasty  ) whereas breakfast when I'm on a morning-shift is an apple and banana on the bus on the way to work.

It's just about the only time when I find eating a chore... but I make myself do it, and I try to tell myself it's doing good. :D

(And yes, I still feel like eating by mid-morning but not really because I'm hungry -only because my colleagues are eating toast dripping in butter and it smells/looks good!)

breakfast is indispensable

Well my friends, there was a time when I did the same mistake of not having breakfast. Although I never used to be troubled by weight related problems nor did I have any health complications but gradually I began to gain weight, and I was clueless to this. My work involves me to do a lot of physical activity so the factor of leading a sedentary lifestyle was certainly not the case. It was after a long time a nutrition expert suggested me that it was this skipping of breakfast that was casuing this sudden weight gain. Since then I have made it a point to never ignore the morning meal again.

Your lucky, I am on the zig zag method and yesterday I had to cram, I think it was like 400 calories per meal down my throat which was very difficult considering I eat 5x a day.

Not eating enough for breakfast?

I always have 2 slices of toast with marmite (no spread). I sometimes have a Go Ahead bar with it as well but not always. This fills me up although I do tend to get hungry a few hours later. But since reading on here, it sounds as though I need to eat more at breakfast to keep me going longer. So my question is, what else can I eat thats healthy?

fruit, oat-meal, egg beaters have really low calories, yoghurt. those are a few good things that are yummeh for breakfast.

I used to have a variety of different small things like that before I started ritually eating fibre one for breakfast, which is a very healthy breakfast cereal, I think it goes without saying, but it's full of fibre.

I go with what my body wants...as long as I'm eating something. Some days I wake up starving and eat a big breakfast, and other days I have to force myself to eat a piece of fruit or something, then a larger snack an hour later.

2 slices of toast is really not enough to start the day.

i usually take a variety of oats and cereals, pancakes, pasta, salads, milk/fruit juice to load up on my energy level.

egg whites and oatmeal, egg whites and whole grain cereal, egg whites and whole grain toast , if you balance your protein and grain you wont get hungry as quickly. If you dont have time to make egg whites, I sometimes just have 1/2 cup of fat free cottage cheese as my protein instead. Egg whites are pretty bland, so I put salsa on mine. Also a breakfast burrito on a whole wheat tortilla made with egg whites, peppers, onions and tomatos is good too. or veggie egg white omlets. It sounds strange, but broccoli and egg omlets are really good as are spinach and egg (whites of course) and tomato and egg. These also get a serving of veggies out of the way! If you're really on the go, try 1 cu of frozen berries, 1/2 cu of plain fat free yogurt, 1/2 cu of fat free milk and 1 scoop of protein powder. It makes a yummy smoothie!

I eat around 6:30am and usually have an english muffin with egg on it and a piece of fruit, or peanut butter if I don't much time. I change it up with some ham, cheese, etc. as long as it all falls under 500 cal.

then around 10 I have piece of fruit or a cereal bar.

if you're hungry, don't deny your body.

I have a problem: I don't really have the time to eat breakfast

Yes you do. It only takes a few minutes to pour and eat a bowl of Kashi.

when I do eat breakfast during the day, I get really hungry only a few hours later and end up going over my calorie goal.

This is more normal than you would think. On a similar note if you eat too much one night, you'll often wake up starving the next morning. Anyway, just eat breakfast and take a snack to eat a few hours later, this is what works the best. Don't fight the hunger, eat a small snack right when you begin to be hungry and STOP and you won't go overboard. Also stay hydrated, you can get false hunger pangs if you are dehydrated and don't drink enough water.
