🏋️‍♀️Science of Diet and Exercise Journal👩‍🎓

I have been keeping an eye on the cyclone & it looked like it was missing you. G & I probably should get a generator.

We went out last night to watch Nathan Whippy Griggs, it was a great show despite his inability to take music requests in the performance due to no phone signal in the paddock next to the local community hall. The chain whip was neat as were the glow in the dark whips but the finale of cracking flaming whips was cool. Also part of the show was cracking traditional bullock whips. Son D purchased one of whippy's hand made 5' whips which he is now determined to learn to crack.

Just got home after another Dr appointment for my knee, unless I can come up with the money to have surgery privately I am looking at a minimum of 3 years to even get a public system surgeon to even look at the knee. I already know from the MRI and private consult it needs surgery.

Doc has prescribed some heavy duty pain meds with the aim for me to be pain free which will at least let me work better on the strengthening exercises I need to stabilise and reduce pressure on the injury. I have noticed recently I have been developing a hip flexor weakness because I have been favouring the knee with reduced flexor activation and more sitting than usual. Hubby has been looking at me funny while I have been working on hip flexor exercises while we watch the Test Match on TV

Doc also decided it was not going to benefit me getting a referral to an exercise physiologist considering the stage I am at with my degree and the work I am putting into it.

Struggling with my weight, If I cut calories lower than I usually eat I am at a high risk of not being able to get all the nutrients I need, I have to work around my injuries as best I can once I get the pain under control.

This is one of those situations where increased exercise is the solution for weight loss rather than diet changes. There are limits to how much you can cut in a healthy way.

I am stubborn so I will overcome not only the knee issues but also the shoulder problems, hip problems and the extra weight from not being as active as I would like. I am feeling about at my worst at the moment but I should probably document my fight back as an example for clients.

I am sure you will find ways around this Tru, as you always do, but it sucks. I like that you are prepared to share your fight back to help others. Good for you!

Seconded, thirded, and fourthed. I do think an outside perspective is valuable but finding someone equally or more knowledgeable than you would be genuinely hard.

Being in a rural town, options for and extra set of eyes is on the problem is limited, there are a few people for general rehab that mostly work with the elderly but there is nobody here that specifically works with athletes. When uni goes back at least I will have others I can throw ideas at for additional feedback that I can apply to myself and to others.

went through the list of fellowship research projects on offer again yesterday but none of them seem to be a good match

I am struggling with the pain meds, they wipe me out and send me to sleep while still in pain.Managed to coach this morning in the short gap between taking the slow release pain meds and passing out on the lounge chair watching the cricket. I don't want to take the breakthrough meds because I don't like the effect on my mental state, being a comatose zombie is no solution to the pain.

it is opioid based so I don't want the dosage too high and risk addiction, I just want the pain low enough that I can function and work through strengthening and rehab exercises that will take pressure away from the underlying problem until I can get a surgical fix.

I hope you can manage your pain, Tru without needing too much medication. It must be so hard. My sister relied on opioid meds to get her through & I know how much she hated the way they made her feel.

It is just so frustrating that our health system is a complete mess to the point of my GP swearing at the situation he finds himself in with being unable to do anything to help some of his patients. My GP is a family friend and it is killing him not being able to make a difference. At least I have a GP there are a lot of people here that cannot even get to see a regular doctor because rural doctors are hard to find, overseas trained doctors once they serve out there time in a rural area head straight to the city and local trained doctors are in the city only. The local hospital has almost no services with everybody being sent 150 km away to a big hospital down the coast with a massive wait list.

It is a good thing I can handle most rehab stuff for myself and the rest of the family because it is not just doctor that are in short supply, allied health practitioners are limited as well also with a long drive. Just like it will be for the paediatrician appointment for little miss that we will have been waiting over 6 months for when we have it next year as a private consult as there is no chance of seeing one in the public system and again over 100 km to get to the private hospital he works out of. If she needs more speech therapy add another year or two of waiting unless it can be done through school.

That's a horrific waiting time for somethimg where early intervention can help so much.
Finding GPs for rural areas is getting to be a problem even here: they don't make a lot of money and when everyone knows where you live you work long hours and emergency nights whether you want to (and get compensated properly) or not.

Doc changed my pain relief today, hopefully it won't make me a zombie, side effect is supposed to be constipation instead, I will eat a few more dates for the extra fibre lol they certainly make me go.

I have taken one this afternoon, I will see what happens, these ones are morphine tablets

I have been asked to consider going onto medical cannabis, it will be a bit more expensive than the opioids but there are cheaper and better products being approved which including one being released soon backed by the western force rugby team as being safe for athletes subject to testing allowing them to continue to compete without pain.

The initial consult fees for all the paperwork to be able to get it legally is pricy but I am aware of how well the products work once you have jumped through all the legal hoops.

I assume you know this but just in case: opioids tend to suppress gut motility. Extra fiber may help the bolus stay moister/softer during the longer transit (which is very helpful!) but it won't help with expulsion per se. Some extra abdominal breathing could theoretically help keep your guts a little more active.

If medical cannabis would help you keep the other meds down that would be great.

I think the cannabis is the way to go but it will have to wait till after the xmas new year period when doc get back from holiday. It will mean I won't be taking any opioids.

I do a lot of diaphragmatic breathing normally, I may also start taking some probiotics to help with gut health as best I can. I don't usually have constipation problems because overall my diet isn't bad but I will do what I can to keep the side effects to a minimum. The dose amount is a low slow release over a 12 hour period and I am feeling pain free at the moment. I felt a little stiff standing up from a chair a short time ago but did not get the sharp stabs of pain that usually goes with it which is a nice change.

It's good that the slow-release pain killers are working. Medicinal cannabis sounds like it would be good for you, Tru.

pain relief is wearing off now but lasted well enough through the day to get some stuff done including some walking in town which caused some ache towards the end but didn't leave me doubled over in pain. With more activity I can rebuild some of the lost strength and endurance and reduce the ache which felt more muscular than internal knee pain.

I just have to keep pushing forwards overcoming problems as they pop up.

If anyone can do it, you can :grouphug:
