Weight-Loss Run!

Weight-Loss
Anyone have a gps running watch with hr monitor? I am wondering if they are as awesome as I think they would be.

Awesome runs Guideon and Wanna!

Wanna I have the Timex Run Trainer 1.0 GPS and heart rate monitor and it is great. I had a Gamin 310 for a brief period of time and liked it too. The Timex was just a little over $100 since the new 2.0 came out.

It gives speed, distance, elevation, time, date, pace, average pace, heart rate, avg heart rate. You can set countdowns, interval timers, goal alarms, heart rate zone alarms, and even drink and eat alarms for long distance running. I'm sure I'm leaving out things. The runs download to a computer app and/or an online app that has a phone app too. It's adjustable to other sports like swimming and cycing. I ran on a track tonight and it was exact at hitting the .25 mile at the right spot on the track each lap. You can turn off the GPS and the watch has a battery that lasts 10 weeks.

One thing I like about my watch is that I can just turn off the alarms and start the stopwtch feature and just run. Just stay in tune with my breathing and efforts and not worrying about the results, but once I'm done all the data is there and I can compare the numbers to the perceptions. I can also turn the alarms on for a heart rate zone that suits how I feel or what I need to do and the beeps keep me on track without having to look at anything.

The best place I've seen for GPS reviews is DC Rainmaker.

Saturday Run

Awesome runs wannebefit (congrats on the PB) and Q!

The weather here was too good not to go today, and I needed to do a long run this weekend as well.
Went for a trail run, as there's a very nice big nature park close by.
Good opportunity to test my new hydration pack ().
Did 19,5 km's in 1:55:38 through various terrain: woods, fields and sand dunes (those last ones are supertough).

On the GPS/HR combo:
I agree with Q: super handy to train in specific hr zones (and have all the benefits that comes with that), but also nice just to track and not to worry about it during the run and analyze afterwards.
It's (generally) not cheap, but a very useful accessory.

Great run Guideon!

Thanks you both for the info on the training watches. I got some back pay from work and I think I want to spend some of it on one of those fancy watches.
I haven't found a really good way to hydrate on runs yet. I have a waist pack that works ok and a hand pack that is good if it's not too hot. So far I have had the most luck with pre-stashed bottles on the route, or my friend brings water and I use hers. Lol. The last one is my favourite, but it makes me a bit of a jerk.

I used to run without any form of hydration, save for a few runs where I had a small water bottle in my hand.
But now I'm going on longer and longer runs, so I need to bring fluids and food.
I hate bottle belts, I had one for my walks, and the thing kept twisting and turning, and that was only at walking speed.

Run

2.1 miles

peak speed 6.9 MPH

It was 90 degrees and sunny, but I wore a long sleeve shirt since my arms are sunburned. This was a pretty tough run. The warmer weather is going to be quite an adjustment. It was more than 30 degrees warmer than my run 2 days ago. My heart rate was way high, but my breathing wasn't too bad. No lactic acid build up (burning) in my muscles, I could talk the entire time. The heart rate is over 90% of the 182 max. We'll see how I feel, but right now I feel great. 182 isn't right. 90% of max is supposed to be a hard sprint with panting and muscles burning. Not only did I not do that for30 minutes I couldn't?

FYI I ended up taking Sunday off. I'm going to try for at least a week straight.

Wow quite the temperature swing, always hard to adjust to that.
Better get some good sweat resistant sun spray

Pfft didn't go for a run since sunday, because of yet another cold.
Getting better again though, just a few more days rest to give my body some recovery time. Looking forward to the weekend to go.
Visiting my parents this weekend, so an opportunity to run somewhere else than on my usual stomping grounds.
Already plotted a 20 km route, with a few escape points if it turns out to be too much, but I'm planning to run on a very low HR (and consequently a low speed) so I should be able to keep going.

So what are your plans for this weekend?

Sorry to hear that Guideon. Get well soon.

I had to work in south Texas this past week. I used a lot of sunscreen. It was hot and I had all long days, but I ran as often as I could.

Tuesday
30 min
1.9 miles
136 bpm avg hr
This was a recovery run. I had a 12 hour field day in the heat before. There was a dead duck in the pond that I was running around and I was goosed in the butt by a goose during my cooldown walk. I guess he thought I should keep running.

Wednesday
13 hours in the field
No run and Chinese buffet. I hadn't eaten in 8 hours by the time we got back and I tossed the veganism and pigged out.

Thursday
Run
30 minutes
2.13 miles
153 bpm avg hr

This was following another long day in the heat, but I think the big meal the night before and the adaption to the heat made me feel a lot better. This was easier than the recovery run on Tuesday, but not easy. This was my first time to lap someone that was running. They were at a minimum running pace and they may have walked or stopped while not in sight, but I'll take it. I passed them, lapped them and almost caught up again before my 30 minutes was up on a roughly half mile loop.

Lapping runners huh? Becoming an athlete!
Good runs Q!

Felt ok enough to go run myself, good long run today, 20 km in just under 2 hours.
Felt good. Learning more about my paces and how long I can maintain everytime I go for a run.

Don't push too hard Guideon while your still geting better. Awesome run though.

The lapping was older ladies, not elderly but older than me. I'll take it.

Run

I chose 155 bpm beforehand. It's a couple bpm below the top end of the aerobic zone. I could talk in complete sentences, but got a really good sweat going. I think this is a good level for me.

Nice running!
We did a slow 10km on Saturday 1:22:06. It was so nice and warm, but all the puddles with ice under them made it a bit tricky. Was supposed to be 14 km but we cut it short due to the slipperiness. Sunday I am running a 5km fun run and possibly doing 16km on the Saturday before. Should be fun.

That's still a long run! The only ice around here is in my drink. It was 67 at dusk this evening. Have fun in the 5K!

did a run yesterday, must have been about 12 km's. Warmup of about 3 km's, 6 km's at a decent heartrate (150-ish) and 3 km cooldown.
My gps was a bit confused, at one time in the warmup it stated I ran the previous km in 3 min 45 sec with a BPM of 127... Now if only I could do that for real :p

Nice runs, wannabefit and Q.

That was dumb. Too much. I was tired from the outset. The watch says I burned 1,445 calories. I wish that was right. I burned plenty though.

That's a bit over 5.6 km for you Canaderlander types.

I wish I had that kind of endurance Guideon. Wanna we are all at different points. What counts is that we keep at it.

I've been a bit too results oriented with my fat loss and my running lately. I'm trying to rush things and that's how I've always hit walls in the past. I don't need an edge of the aerobic zone target heart rate and I don't need to lose fat any faster than it is happening. I've come a long way in just 3 months and if I can just relax a bit I'll achieve lots more in the next three. Tomorrow I'm going to listen to the Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" while I run. Nice mellow feel good weirdness to set my pace.

If you aren't familiar with it I recommend "Do You Realize?", the title track, and "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell".

"Do You Realize?" is a wonderfully beautiful and sad song. A real secular hymnal and one of the finest songs ever made.

If you don't like it just don't tell me.

Good job! I am very happy with my progress, I just find it amusing. I like to get my money's worth in running and golf. Lol!
I normally train in miles, it's less than Kim's! And all my goal races are in miles (Cayman and Honolulu). Hahahahaha. ;)

Wanna we are all at different points. What counts is that we keep at it.
So true Q!
Every runner had to start somewhere, even those who are running marathons in just over 2 hours.

I run in km's, they go by faster :p
I rarely run with music. Love to run with the sounds of nature or the city.
The best is when running a race on a bit where there's not too many spectators. Being out running with so many others, yet everybody is running on their own, so you hear nothing, except for the (heavy) breathing and panting.

I do not run for weight loss, even though it's a nice side effect :p

Had an intervaltraining in mind for tonight, but not sure yet if I'm gonna to do it.
Legs feel a little bit tired, and I've got a 19 km trailrun on Saturday (with some serious elevation gain, well as serious as it gets for a flat bit of land as the Netherlands :) )
Next week will be a (relative) rest week, shorter distances to recuperate a bit (and I'll be at a musicfestival at Easter, so I don't have time to go running then anyway).
