I Think I Can

I'm loving the weather... we sure are going to pay for it when we need water though. Here's a shot from my Tuesday afternoon ride... or was it Wednesday... hmmm... can't remember now... anyway... good ride... lovely weather...

Woohoo... 400 posts... do I win a prize?

Hey Tsi, I was in Sacramento this week - coooooooooooooollllllllllllddddddd! By the way - I love the wheels. I tore down the front wheel and replaced the cones and it works fine. I didn't do anything with the rear wheel. I have a nice pair of Mavic Ksyrium wheels on my road bike (Orbea Onix), but I needed some updated wheels for my Klein.

Thanks again!

Awesome! I'm glad they worked out for you. I knew the rear wheel was solid, it was just the front wheel making a little noise. I swapped them out when I got a PowerTap and I bought the matching front wheel just for aesthetics.

The PowerTap still seems like an overpriced cyclometer but it's more numbers to log and I'm all about the numbers so it's fun for me.

I just finished the first big block of training and ended it with the ... 1:35:45. Not a PR but a decent time and on the low side of my expectation.

Had I known it was going to be a High Gravity Day, I would've scheduled my run for another day. Holy smokes, I can't wait to get back to the days of overnight recovery. My legs were spunk-less. 5 miles at a whopping 8:38 pace.

hey IRONMAN!!! need ya.

here is a post I did.... I would respect your reponse please.

"OK -- the glow is gone"

I did the GFL 140.6 in 12:27 in October
X-Country Marathon in Nov 4:11
ING Miami in 4:00

BUT- I have basically done nothing since Ironman except gain 9 lbs.

I have a 70.3 "the Gator" in 8 weeks. That is not enough time to get really ready, I checked the training plan, and it is already talking about race prep.

What do you guys and gals think I should to to get ready for this April 5th event?
Bike focus? Swim? Run? Starve myself and drop the weight (affraid of getting weak). I respect the distance, and understand "in race" nutrition-- but in the short 7 weeks I have to train I am a bit "un-nerved" about what to do.

I ran yesterday- 6 miles, and my legs are even sore. LOL!! Ironlevel fitness slips pretty fast.

Please help with your ideas.

FF

How much time do you have available to train each week and how much do you think you can handle? And what I mean is that you might have 30 hours to train but you'd die if I gave you 30 hours of workouts. Could you handle 10? How is your swim and bike?

I started sketching some weeks for Richard and it looks like tomorrow would be a long run and then you'd have another on the 8th of March. I think you would want to run tomorrow but not go long. I think we should build up your frequency in order to get that long run in four weeks. In fact, frequency would be your theme in general to try and establish some fitness.

----------------------
2 x swim @ 30 minutes
1 x swim @ 45 minutes

2 x 1 hour bike
1 x 2-3 hour bike

3 x 3-5 mile run
----------------------

Could you do something like that? All would be done at an aerobic pace.

Being 9 pounds over only means your run will be 4.5 minutes slower. Don't worry about the weight.

i guess 2 marathons since Ironman is really "nothing" but you know what I mean.

anyhow...

ran today

5 out and fast 38:33 (7:50's or so)
5 back were HIIT, smooth long sprint stride to exaust, then light job to walk, pick up again, did 10 rounds. Then slow run last mile home.

I didn't even consider the fact that Rich and I have another athlete who paid my registration (Rick) are going, and I had promised to "play the day out with them."

It's not going to be a "race" for me. Rick did the miami 13.1 in 2:23--- no sweat on that event. hahahah I am working it all out right here in your log. sorry.

BUT-- if you are willing to work with me... let's work on Calgary! I have the 70.3 Calgary inaugural, I am registered, and I would like to qualify for the worldchampionships. Anything 5:30 and below will get it. - if you will help, shoot me that link to your site again, and I will get signed up.

Sure. How much time do you have available each week to train? What is your goal for the race? What do you think you're splits would be to achieve that goal including transitions?

I have to vent so please excuse anything that comes out of my mouth if it offends you.

I'm really tired of being supportive of my friends only to have them tear me down every time I do well. This happens all the time and with different people and it's really starting to piss me off.

The typical scenario is someone asks me how I did in an event. I tell them my result and they then feel the need to tell me about someone else they know who was at the event that did better.

The latest example is a "friend" of mine who asked me about the half marathon I did a few weeks ago. As soon as I told him my time, he mentioned that another guy did the race as well and beat me. Yeah... tough feat when the guy is a Pro triathlete. But this crap happens all the time and I'm really getting freaking tired of it.

I've been training my ass off for years and I'm FINALLY starting to see the results of hard work and I'm tired of my f'ing friends tearing me down.

Thank you for ignoring my rant. As you were.

Does your 'friend' race? I bet not. Don't let trivial crap like that get to you, I do all the time and it is a waste of energy mate.

I have about 15 days to my race, should I be doing any speed building training? Some bricks ( I've only done one). What about my diet? I am not drinking, how much will say a cheat meal affect my training the next day? Should I be eating really damn clean for the next 15 days straight? I have trouble getting crabs into me before I train, any ideas? Brown rice, boring, with what?

etc etc, Needs more info.

It's not just one friend, it's several that do it and they all race. I think that's the point. I'm faster than they are and they don't like it. So rather than be supportive, they feel the need to tear me down instead. It's quite frustrating given that I'm the one that always calls or sends emails before and after their races with words of encouragement and praise. I should start telling them how much they suck instead. But that's not who I am.

When training for a short distance, you would theoretically want to train for speed along the way until race day. However, that assumes you've been training consistently. If there hasn't been consistent training, the point of the training becomes the need to try and establish consistent training.

If you're repeating the weeks as I suggested, you should have a brick this weekend.

I didn't start eating healthy until I started getting serious about training. And I only did that because I wanted to try and squeeze every ounce of speed out of every available avenue. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if you want to eat bad food... eat bad food. I ate a chocolate truffle last night because we celebrated Valentines day yesterday because we both have workouts today. I also eat a big fat steak. But I make that the exception and not the standard. It's ok to eat what you want every once in awhile. It's what keeps you from craving it.

I hope you meant carbs, if you want crabs... go find some hookers. :)

Why do you need so many carbs?

Tall poppy syndrome, it is a side effect of success. Revaluate what being a 'friend' means to you then. Perhaps they need to be filed under the acquaintance category. I need carbs before and after I train as an energy source.

Okay, so this is what I will be doing this week.

Week10

Monday: Swim 300yd, weights
Tuesday: Bike 15 miles
Wednesday: Run 4 miles
Thursday: Off
Friday: Swim 300yds, weights
Saturday: Bike 18 miles
Sunday: Run 2 miles

I have trained every day since late Jan cept for the two days durring the heat wave. I plan on training all the way up to the race.

Nutrition

What you need is a well balanced diet which includes a wide variety of fruits & vegetables and lean meats. You need carbohydrates but you don't have to load up on them. For post workout nutrition, you need about 300 calories with a 4:1 carb-protein ratio. A chocolate milk is perfect. If you're going to eat lunch after your workout than skip the chocolate milk.

Prior to a large race, I will eat a little more carbs (pasta dish) but I rarely change my routine since that's where you normally get into trouble.

What I have written above is exactly how I eat. Now if you're "craving" something, then I usually take that as a sign that my body is lacking. For example, in a month or so when the volume starts to get really high, I will start craving MEAT. I usually take that as a sign that my body needs protein.

Stay on the nutrition and watch for the cravings.

Of the three disciplines, which is your strongest and which is your weakest? I think swimming is going to be the weakest right? Are you able to cover the race distances on the biking and running?

Week10

Monday: Swim 300yd, weights
Tuesday: Bike 15 miles
Wednesday: Run 4 miles
Thursday: Off
Friday: Swim 300yds, weights
Saturday: Bike 18 miles
Sunday: Run 2 miles

There is always someone faster, stronger, smarter, better looking, richer or has a hotter wife around the next corner. Your "friends" are jerks.

^ Yes I can cover the bike and run. This whole time I have been thinking " 12 miles, that’s about 30km" without bothering to convert, same with the run. Therefore, I have actually biked and run further than your training schedule, which I hope is a good thing. I am reasonably confident I could do the swim if I mix it up with breath stoke. I just don't want to look like a dork, especially if some close friends come and watch me. I know that sounds silly.
