I Think I Can

great slide show! You've been everywhere! I loved the jumping off the ferry pick, thats awesome, some of those pictures looked like they could be postcards!

Based on some advice, I have switched from Ensure to whey protein powder in my smoothies. I found it at Sportsbasement which is convenient for me to get to so I think I'll be able to continue to use this during the off season. In-season, I will switch back Ensure since I require the calories.

I substituted 1/2 scoop of powder and it seems to add a subtle hint of flavor and provides a little bit of thickness. I think I've discovered the perfect amount on my first attempt. This reduces the calories in my smoothie by about 200 calories.

excellent switch. Glad you found it suitable the first go around

It was nice to put in a decent sized week. I think I had about 10.5 hours... of which 5.5 came from a single bike ride. I joined a cycling team in October in hopes of improving my speed. I went out for my first ride with them on Saturday and it was a good time although I did get in a bit of trouble for pushing the group into an uncomfortable level.

I liken myself to a labrador retriever chasing a ball... the ball being a rider who went off the front. He and I blew apart the group and I found myself being yelled at by the club president for not being a team player. At the end of the day we all kissed and made up and I had a great time. I think this will really help improve my cycling as I would not have gone nearly as hard had I not been with a group.

Sounds to me like you and that guy should just go cycling together and leave the rest of the group behind.

What's this about not being a team player? When did training become a team sport?

I know... trust me... he and I will do some solo rides. We were kind of laughing at the dude because when he was yelling at me, he could barely catch his breath.

There is no " I " in team but...

trIathlete

That's pretty funny that he was having trouble catching his breath, especially when you and that other guy were way ahead of them :)

I would have felt pretty good about that ... simply because it's always a nice feeling to be at the head of the pack (Alpha position is always sweet!)

And you're right! There is definitely an "I" in triathlete ;)

Sounds like you need a different group; one that is a little faster than you. Then, you can yell at them for pulling too hard;).

I have a question, which is probably very amateur. In one of your pic's on your slideshow, you are sticking both legs from knee down into a bucket of ice/ice water. Why? I can only assume it helps the muscles but to me warm water would help more than cold ????

And great slideshow!

The cold helps reduce swelling and soreness. And I think the most important factor is not necessarily the icing part but defrosting part. When you get out of the ice, you have increased blood flow to the area. In addition, you want to take a warm shower within 30 minutes which increases even more blood flow. That blood flowing into the area helps speed up the healing process.

I wrote a silly blog entry about it here...

I went out with the local bike shop group yesterday and did 30+ miles in the freezing cold. It was 32.9 degrees when we arrived at the starting point and everyone ran inside the bike shop to keep warm. After about 30 minutes of complaining we finally started our ride. The first few miles were just absolutely brutal since the wind would just cut right through but we eventually hit the hills and warmed up a bit.

I'm going out with the A group this morning but it's only 40 degrees today. I just hope it doesn't rain.

You're tougher than me. I'm a pu$$y when the temp is less than 50F. I don't have enough clothes to wear in 32F and I don't know how to keep my lungs from freezing at that temp.

Whee!! Just got back from spending the holiday in (freezing Wisconsin)...

Brrrrr!...

I'm going to State College, PA, on Sunday and I know my fat @$$ won't be venturing outside. That's what treadmills are for.

I got it, thanks! The wheels are one of the the last pieces of my Klein-Quantum-road-bike-to-tt-trainer-conversion-project. I'll post pics once finished.

I have to post some pics of my running route!

It is amazing. Looks very nice and winterly over there though
