G8r80 and GT2003: onward!

attack on sugarloaf? It is Sunday.

call me if so

oh and................... :mrright:

Todd, I don't have your phone number anymore. Remember - I dropped my Blackberry during our last century ride and I haven't replaced it yet. Some of my phone numbers weren't transferable to my temporary phone.

I think I'm in, but I have to check with the missus. I'm whipped, ya know!

Sunday: travel day to Mill Valley, CA, and rest day.

Monday: 10 mile bike ride on trails and roads. There are some nasty hills here.

Tuesday: 17 mile bike ride. Spent almost all of it on the big chainring and middle cogs to build up strength, except when grinding up hills.

1.5 miles, 1.5 miles and 1 mile on treadmill. The last mile was to see what my best mile time was - 7:55 and I had a little in the tank left, so I will shoot for 7:30 next time. I want to work on speed because my cardio and respiratory systems are in pretty good shape now and my running and biking legs need to catch up.

I PM'd you.

I am down to 177, and may be able to ride with you, IF YOU ARE ALL WORN OUT!

Don't jip me man! This was our first event- remember when I ditched you and got lost!!! what a day!

I haven't had a flat since.

I need you

FF

Had to take some time to catch up on "all the goings on". Keep up the good work g8r. It's inspiring to me to see you push harder and harder. You accomplish 1 thing then it's something bigger and better.

Worked out today, back and bi's, followed by 20 minutes split between the treadmill and recumbent bike. Consistency has lacked the last couple of weeks. Plan: Friday - Legs and traps followed by something aerobic; bike, treadmill, stairmaster, something.

Yesterday after work rode up and down some nasty Marin County hills. The first three miles averaged 7 mph and I had to stop 3 times to catch my breath. Last 3 miles were pure speed, averaging 25 mph and seriously tested my brakes. The rest were flat. It was gosh darn cold and I didn't have enough warm clothes for this trip so I called it a day after 12 miles.

Today was last day in Marin. Went to a YMCA in San Francisco for a swim workout. They had slow, medium and fast lanes and it was rewarding to do laps in the "medium" lane and not get caught by the person behind me.

1500 meters in 100 meter sets. Broke 2 minutes on the first sets when I did ugly flip turns and kickoffs. Settled in and did the last 600m nonstop @ 2:30 / 100m pace. Slow and unsteady.

It's set - Flyinfree and I are gonna tackle Sugarloaf Mountain on Sunday. We'll decide after the first 56 mile loop if we wanna do it twice.;)

Today was a travel day. Had very little sleep on airplane from San Fran last night/this morning and my times reflect that a bit.

Continuing on those fast (for me) miles:

First mile: 8:10
2.5K (1/2 of 5K - 1.55 mile): 13.15
2.5K: 13:10

I cannot maintain this pace for more than 2, maybe 3 miles. But, I will continue to work at this pace with shorter stuff, up to 2 miles, and slow down for longer runs.

Heart rate was way up there, for me, 155 (90% of my theoretical mhr), so I am a little concerned for cardiac concerns, not to mention it hurts!

Way to go G8r. Let us hear about sugarloaf after tomorrow.

Last night, chest and tri's (heavy) followed by 25 minutes aerobic stuff. I started on the stairmaster and my quads started cramping about 4 minutes in. It got worse and worse so I finished on the recumbent bike. That's it for now, 2 days this week, hoping for 3 or more next week.

I feel more energized and motivated when I go heavy on my weights. I guess that's always been my big thing so I'll keep going heavy and adjust my cardio sessions to get the goals I want.

Cya, Greg

Flyinfree, my fingers are about the only part of me that aren't sore and cramped up!

I get up at 4:00 am, have breakfast, load up and leave at 4:45am to pick up Todd on the way to Clermont. We arrive and I register and get our info and maps. Todd is training for his first 140.6 next month. We pace ourselves at 16 - 17 mph for the first 30 - 50 miles to have something in the tank after 112 miles.

The day gets starts off warm and gets very hot very fast. 100+ F! We get to 33 miles and I get my first cramp in my right calf. I fight through it and, oddly enough on a hill (the hill where I drop FF), it goes away, temporarily, but other leg muscles are starting to cramp up as well. At the 40 mile mark, we have to decide do we want to cut this short and go 56 or 112 but the sag station volunteer gives us another option - 90 m miles, which is what we take.

I come limping in and stop at a light, about 2 miles from the end. I put my leg down and it cramps up as I straighten it and it cramps up as I try to flex it. I almost fall off the bike a second time in 3 rides.

This was a very hard ride. I think the oppressive heat was the main factor, not to mention the unrelenting hills, which were much hillier than Boulder.

I'll feel good about this ride in another day or two, when I'm not so sore.

(the hill where I drop FF), DAMN, that's funny! You dropped the Ironhead, uhm, Iron man in his tracks, bet he's super-motivated now!

I'm feelin you on the cramps. On my metric century last year I got to about 43 miles or so and the cramps set in. I was cramping even when pedaling for a while. It seemed my legs would try to cramp on the down pedaling then you could feel them trying to loosen up on the up stroke. This went on for a while, what a nightmare. It was a flat ride but the heat was unbearable. Glad u fought your way through it!

I'm working out tomorrow, chest/tri's again, and HEAVY! I love going heavy, did I say that before?

Anyway, the new job is good. I actually just got done designing a "weight room" workout log for the people in my classes. It's great having a job that not only involves nutrition education but also the "gym aspect" of it all.

I just ordered another sports nutrition book. They shipped it today so it should be in this week!!!

I'll update tomorrow after my workout!

No work out yesterday, drama instead. The oldest child (23) tried to wrap his car around a tree. Supposedly swerved to miss a dog and then couldn't make the curve. Anyway, car is trashed but he is OK except for a "rug burn" from the airbag.

Clothes packed and with me for todays workout. Either chest/tri's or back/bi's. We'll see what it turns out to be when I get to the gym. If no one else is there, it will be back/bi's. I gotta have a spotter for chest. And, one things for sure, I'M GOING HEAVY!!!!!!!!

Great workout today. Bench press 2x135x8, usually only 1 set but shoulders were slow to warm up, 1x205x6, 1x225x3, 1x135x10. Overhead dumbbell extensions (for tricep, ? proper name, someone please tell me) 4x50x7-8 supersetted with close grip bench press 4x95x8. Followed up with 16 grueling minutes on the stairmaster (60 floors) followed by 18 minutes on the treadmill alternating jogging and walking. Felt really good. All the drama has passed from yesterday. I can't wait until Friday. Heavy back day.

Nice going Greg!

Swim day: 3000 yards in pool in 1:06 non-stop! That is way more than my oly length swim (Pumpkinman, October 18) and even more than 70.3 swim. If I don't get frazzled on the swim (a big if), I can do pretty well at Pumpkinman.

Ocean swim day: During the first 25 yards, I realized I wasn't exhaling underwater, but once I realized that, I settled down and churned out 1200 continuous yards. While the water burned my nose, by turning my head higher than usual, I was able to minimize my salt intake.

4.6 mile run: 42:03

Short workout today but hey, I was in the friggin' gym on a Friday, it was desolate....LOSERS!!! Anyway, HEAVY,HEAVY,HEAVY back and biceps. I'm really starting to see some gains. Weight is still right around 233 and I'm eating just about whatever I want. Before too long I'll jump into the cut phase. I'm really starting to dig the gym scene at work. Same guys, same days, gigging each other if we aren't there, all in good fun but very motivating. Take care all. Maybe I can fit something in fitness wise over the weekend. No football game so life could improve drastically. I'll update later. Take care, Greg

Today: 3000 yards in pool in 1:12. Swam first 500 yards without a pull buoy and remembered why I choose only wetsuit legal or salt water triathlons. Struggled mightily to keep my legs up and wore myself out. I was winded at 500 yards and recovered while swimming the last 2500 yards with the pull buoy. As strange as this is for me to say, swimming with a pullbuoy or wetsuit in freshwater is becoming mundane - like biking 30 miles or running 3 miles for me.

Update: When I registered for the Pumpkinman 2 months ago, I didn't know that that was homecoming weekend. My freshman daughter wants to go to the Homecoming Dance and my wife wants to be home to help her get "prissy" for it. I am not sure I want to go there to do a tri by myself, so I am considering cancelling it and looking toward another Olympic length this year.

I am going to register for the Gator half Ironman length triathlon in Florida on April 4. A year ago, I thought I might be ready to take a shot at a 70.3 in '09 and now I think I will be. The swim always seemed like it would be my limiting factor, but I think I can physically handle the 1.2 mile swim (the mental aspects are something I still need to work on).

That is awesome that you are already heading into a half ironman! I'm glad to see your swimming keeps coming along too, hopefully I will follow right behind you with my progress. :)
