G8r80 and GT2003: onward!

Swam 1000 yards in Boulder Reservoir where the sprint tri will be held on Saturday. I was rattled and hyperventilated during first 320-yard lap, better during second lap and did my best time (6:00) during the third lap. Water is murky, green, cold and patchy, ranging from 65 - 72F. Then, ran/walked 3.1 miles over rough terrain at 7500 feet to acclimate to the higher elevation. Probably burned 800 calories.

BMR is 1767.

Fitday: 2400 Calories. So, net loss of 200 Calories.

You are doing gr8 keep it up. How much do you weigh?

Nice job on the training G8r80. Way to hang in there on the swim training. That should really help on race day.

Thanks Drex. I'm gonna try to sneak out there for lunch on Tuesday for another go with my full wetsuit.

Fitness, I weigh 194#, well off my goal of 180, but more than halfway from my starting point of 215.

Good work mate, be careful not to overdo it, always look for bad signs, if sometimes you feel tired and not in the mood take a day off. R u doing any HIIT sessions? A blood analysis might also reveal how training is affecting you as well. I wish you all the best, i'll be following your journal :D

Fit: no worries.

I'm in Boulder, Colorado. After class, I went 9.6 miles on road bike that I brought with me. The bike was not riding right and was clanking and rattling regardless what chainring or cog I was on. When I got back to hotel, I took a close look and the front derailleur cable was loose, allowing the front derailleur to slide too far over and rub the chain. I'll have that fixed at a local bike shop tomorrow.

Then, swam at the YMCA. 4x100s at 2:10 / 100. Had a slow go getting started but after the 4th 100, I got into a groove and went 800 yards @ 2:10 / 100 yards for the full 800 yards of the tri on Saturday with zero rest stops, which pleased me. Probably burned about 600 Calories.

BMR is 1767.

Fitday: 2000 Calories. So, net loss of 400 Calories.

Nice consistency gator, keep up the good work!

All the house remodeling is done. Cabinets are put up, WE R DONE! So, this is the week to get back into it.

Yesterday I got to set up a workout program for a co-workers daughter. That was kind of cool. It has been a while since I've had that opportunity and I really enjoyed it. So, I gave up a partial day of training to help out someone else.

Today I hit it hard (for me). Chest 6 sets, heavy, Tri's 6 sets heavy followed by 30 minutes on the treadmill, walk for 2-3 minutes, jog for 2-3 minutes.

Diet continues to go well. I'm maintaining 233 easily and consistently. I expect with a little more focus in the next couple of weeks I can drop some more weight.

Life's back to normal. I'll update again soon!

Greg, glad to see you're getting back in!

Yesterday after work, I got the bike fixed at REI and picked up some tri shorts and two tri jerseys on clearance for $12 each. Very good deal. Didn't work out.

Today after work, rode around town for about 20 miles (1:10). (I need to put my bike computer back on.) Then, swam 400 yards as a final tuneup for the tri on Saturday in 9:00 with a pull buoy while intentionally keeping my breathing in check and keeping good form. Just 2 months ago, I struggled to go 440 yards in 14 minutes. I feel very good about my swim progress.

Thanks Drex!

Froze my butt off here in Boulder - rained all morning and was 50F. Took the day off and rested although I had to work. Picked up my race packet and heard the spiel from the race director. There will be 350 participants in 5 waves = 70 / wave! That's a lot.

I'm gonna stay in tonight, watch a movie, organize my stuff and go to bed early.

I'm psyched for tomorrow.

Triathlon results

I arrive at the site about an hour early and set up my stuff in the transition area. I am no pro on transitions, but I am not a rookie either and I feel comfortable with my setup.

I go for a 1-mile ride, 1/2 mile run and 50 yard swim to warm up. In retrospect, these were not nearly long enough. I will increase the bike to 3 miles and the swim to 100 yards next time.

The first wave starts. A swimmer signals to be rescued after 100 yards. Then the 2nd and 3rd waves begin in 3-minute waves.

Finally, my wave starts. I position myself on the inside, away from the commotion. I start off for the first 100 yards in good shape, but then I start dealing with anxiety; the water is green and cold, and I am thinking of the elevation and I begin to struggle with breathing. I struggle to swim 25 strokes (25 yards) before I am struggling for air. I finally get to the first buoy at the 350 yard mark and realize that I am not exhaling underwater consistently - the same problem I had at my last tri! I try to relax and focus on proper breathing and counting my strokes. I get off course on the home stretch and end up swimming about 50 yards farther than I should because of my weak sighting. But, the swim is over and I even beat some other folks out of the water, including a few from a previous wave. I am real dizzy from the swim but manage to jog to the transition area.

I have a quick T1 and am on the bike. I start off a little slowly and am still woozy. I am making good progress, passing about 10 riders, when the biker in front of me turns left, the police officer directs him and I, like a lemming, follow. I go about 1 mile, realize there is nobody else around, remember the the race director saying "there are no left turns" and turn around. I get back on the road after a 2-mile detour that cost me about 7 minutes.

I motor on the bike, passing about 40 - 50 riders and not getting passed by anyone. I average about 19mph and do not hold back like I did in Silver Springs.

I get back to the transition area, put on my shoes with the new Yankz that I just bought - very cool and gives me 1 less thing to not have to worry about - and take off. I sprint the last 100 yards and feel good but totally fatigued.
My brother says he timed me for the 4 mile run in 35 minutes, but that sounds too fast.

Overall assessment: Taking into account the bike ride was not "flat and fast" as advertised, it was actually quite hilly with long, slow climbs and fast descents (40 mph on 1 descent, 30+ on 5 others) and the elevation (5300' versus the 100' where I live), I am pleased with my bike and run. If I can get over the anxiety of swimming, I think that will be much better too. At least, I ended the swim strong and on a positive note. Oh, and I need to follow the route better:rolleyes: And, I need to lose 10 - 15 pounds to improve my running.

I think my total time was 2:43, but I'll post the official results once posted. The tri was 750m, 26miles (although I went 28) and 4 miles.

 WoW. My REI NEVER had specials as good as that. Great job on the swim progress G8r. Sounds like its all lining up for you!

Excellent race!!!! I'm so proud of that accomplishment for you! Kudos on the swim. Sounds like that could have gone sour very easily but you pulled it together quite nicely, even if the sighting was a tad *off* no biggie-just something to work on.

Colorado is difficult when you're not used to it! Amazing race for a flat-lander :)

I love these races that advertise "fast and flat" I have entered quite a few with that description and NONE of them have been true. I've now decided "fast and flat" is code for "exhausting and hilly". I just assume it now.

You had a great day! I hope you are reveling in it.

Great job on the race G8r80! Sounds like you would have owned on the bike if you didn't get lost. :11doh:

Thanks Sparrow. Yes, it would have been easy for me to quit, as about 10 people did, during the swim, and a few other things went wrong but more things went right and the problems are correctable. I have you to thank for much of my swimming ability. Now, if you can get inside my head and keep me from getting frazzled during the swim...

Hey. You run, swim and bike like a little girl.

Focus: You just insulted 1 billion little girls...

Great job on the race G8r80! Sounds like you would have owned on the bike if you didn't get lost. :11doh:

Thanks Drex. I had made an early decision to hammer 99% of the way and not "save myself" for the run and I think that was the right decision for me.

There was only one place where I could get lost on the bike split and I happened to find it. But, I won't make that mistake next year when I return.
