Cate's Diary

I'm doing okay. I am also on a 30-day break from alcohol, which I think is helping. I feel so much better already. Day 4 today. It's easier to do when I'm back home, so I'm going to take the opportunity while I have it.

Hi, Em. I'm sure the break from alcohol will be doing both of us a lot of good. I know I am sleeping much better. It has taken my body a while to adjust though. I didn't realise that drinking wine helped me to go to the toilet.

It is funny, LaMa. Mine has adjusted now thank goodness, but I am having oats for breakfast more often & they help.
Yesterday I got a good couple of walks in between the rain. It's bucketing down today.
Cals were 1446, with a 413 deficit.
In the last 26 days I only had wine one day (30/6) I feel I am doing well with this. I must hop on the scales tomorrow. I have different things to try when I feel like wine at the end of the day. Yesterday I had half a bottle of a de-alcoholised shiraz & it was quite pleasant. It's not in the same street as the real thing flavour-wise, but I still enjoyed it. The first one I tried was more like cordial.

That's good you got out between downpours Cate. I miss the rain--we're in quite a dry spell...too bad we can't trade each other a bit of sun and warmth for a day or two (or 3 or 4???) of rain!

Interesting point; Alcohol is a depressant, which will allow you to fall asleep faster, however, if you have just a little too much, you sympathetic nervous system never shuts down, so as it wears off, that system kind of comes back online, waking you back up.

Also of note: When processing alcohol through your system, you don't go completely into REM sleep, which is critical for your brain in order to sort of reset itself.

End result of both, you end up getting less actual refreshing sleep under the influence than you would 100% sober. Yes, I know these things as an ex-drunk. Most people will never need to know them because don't drink like I used to, but still good information.

Well done on the no wine thing! I agree on the de-alcoholized wines: some are nice even if not really wine but many are way too sweet. Even the nice ones tend to taste better when you add 50% sparking water though.

Thanks TDT, I 100% know how disastrous alcohol is for my sleep, unfortunately. The difference in my energy levels even after 6 days is immense. Interesting comment though, thank you.

I wish we could! It has hardly stopped raining for 3 days. Almost 90 mm!
TDT- I am waking much more refreshed, that’s for sure. I’m getting into more teas & trying new ones. I’m taking a no alcohol bubbly to our family lunch today.
Thanks, LaMa. I’m actually enjoying not drinking this time. So glad you are having such a good time!
Hi, Em. It’s good for us to have this break.
Typing in my phone this morning so Arch can sit on my lap as we’re going to the family lunch & leaving him at home. It’s too wet to take him to someone’s house.
1488 cals, 23 deficit. LOL. At least there was a deficit…..just! Was hungry yesterday & it rained all day. Squeezed in a walk in town with Archie in light rain in a raincoat.
D & the kids coming tonight.

Thanks, LaMa. I’m just home from the family lunch & think I’ll be having an early night. I have had diarrhoea & am glad to be home. I have no idea what upset my stomach. Maybe it was the no alcohol bubbly.

Geez that is a lot of rain. I know I find it hard to get mtivated to get out in it in the winter when it's so heavy like that....and that's even when i have good rain gear!
I hope your stomach settles quickly.

Thanks, Liza & LaMa :grouphug:
I felt better before bedtime & slept fairly well. My stomach has settled down.
I went over my calories yesterday with going out to lunch & having D & the kids for a birthday dinner. 1665 cals with a 195 deficit.
It's actually sunny today, but still very wet. I'll take Arch for a walk in about an hour & maybe give him a bath when we get back. I really do need to find some weatherproof gear, especially some wearable boots. It's very hard with my feet to find ones that are both comfortable & waterproof. I just went on eBay & bought some silicone galoshes. I just got one pair & will see what they're like.
I have inputted my 3 meals for the day & without anything afterwards, my total is 1050. BF was baked beans & bacon on oat sourdough toast, lunch will be prawn gyozas, dipping sauce & some salad, dinner will be a small serve of venison lasagne with veggies. I'll have some fruit at some time- maybe in the afternoon.
We don't have to go anywhere today :)

Footwear is difficult and the firmer it is the harder it gets to find something comfortable. I'm super happy with my new hiking shoes but that's the first time in possibly 20 years!

I find that too. I have found waterproof boots that do work for me even on long walks, but yes they are so often hard to find!

Lol your meals sound so delish. I like that you have balance. Mine are mostly baked chicken and veggies but that's not sustainable all the time, especially when things open up.
