Cate's Diary

So, somehow all the stress has helped me come to a few decisions about looking after my health & wellbeing. It’s even more important now
That's really good to hear that you are using the stress to motivate toward positive changes. It can be so easy to sink into bad habits when the stress hits so it's good to be a little more conscious of making good choices at this time.
Really nice always to hear of the supports around you--your friend, Archie, G...a good community of support really makes such a difference.
I really hope your son remains well and it's good to know you all are ready to catch him and support him if he needs it.

Thank you, LaMa. I have been hiding from people so that they wouldn’t see how vulnerable I am. My friend, G suspected as much. She actually thought the golfing ladies had said something that offended me & I did tell her that the discussions after golf I do often find offensive & that I felt that if I said what I thought most wouldn’t talk to me again. She said it was worse a couple of weeks ago & she called them out on it. They don’t think they are racist or narrow-minded but most of them are.
I also find kindness & sympathy undo me easily when I’m feeling so stressed. Being honest & open with my feelings in my diary helps me, even though the kindness I receive can make me teary :grouphug:
Thank you, Liza. I have learned over the years the hard way that comfort eating & drinking makes things worse. I am trying to nurture myself back to feeling strong again. Part of that is stepping back from worrying about our son so much. It doesn’t help anyone & hurts me. He knows he has our love always & he knows how we feel.
I’m on day 6 of my new healthy plan. I feel good about what I’m doing but will share when I’m feeling stronger.

That's great Cate! Looking forward to hearing about the plan when you're ready to share.
Also great about finding a like-minded friend at golf--good to have support when the discussions are hard to handle there.

I understand your level of sensitivity. I don't think there's anything wrong at all with staying away from people & things that don't boost you up, if they are avoidable. :grouphug:

Thank you, Liza, Tru & MsBubbles. I find I am needing more time at home than before to recuperate from most outings, even just to my local town. Everywhere you go people are frightened or angry or both & there is so much negativity. It's all understandable, except for most of the anger. A few months ago I thought the world might end up a better place & people might be kinder & more considerate, but so many people complain over minor inconveniences & seem even more selfish than before. What a shame. We have this chance to change the world for the better. I'm going to try to simplify my life as much as I can & become more self-sufficient. I try hard to reduce waste & take my own bags, try to avoid packaging if possible, buy local, buy only what we need.
We took Archie into town with us today & I really enjoy our interactions with other dogs & dog owners. He doesn't seem intimidated by huge dogs, which is good in some ways. I wish I felt confident enough to let him run around off lead up here. I'm frightened he'll run off chasing wallaby scents & not find his way home. I could not cope with losing him.
I realise that I am feeling down at the moment & will keep an eye on that. Hopefully, I'll bounce back soon.

Cate keep Archie on a leash . Even though our garden is enclosed we have a different problem here with dog nappers. I would be distraught if she was stolen so when she goes out someone goes with her .

It's good when you realise you are down . And you are doing good eating well and getting out . You will feel brighter again soon. I empathise.

I agree with your synopsis about people I don't think it's going to change them that much. I now shop in the same local shops every week and am doing my best to stay safe. It's all we can do.

Hope you relax over the weekend Cate

Kind people use the pandemic as an opportunity to be kind. Nasty people use it as an opportunity to be nasty. That's just how it goes.

I will keep him on a lead, Petal. It’s not worth the risk. I am used to getting down & know what I need to do & that it passes for me. It’s usually a reaction & an accumulation of things. I can often step back from other people’s problems to protect myself, but not when it’s one of my sons. I have to try. We’re playing golf together at G’s club as part of a team of 4. I get well looked after there & will have good company.
I suppose you’re right, LaMa. I’ll try hoping people will become kinder, as the alternative is depressing.

You´re doing the part you can do for general kindness: you ARE kind, you´ve raised kind, decent sons and are helping your grandkids become kind, decent people as well. That´s the best anyone can hope for. If you look at how cruel daily life used to be we´ve come a long way (compared to, say, pulled the greased-up head off a goose while running past at high speed for sport). And if we don´t all kill each other I think we´ll keep improving.

Thank you LaMa. Your words are a nice start to my day. G & I are about to head to golf, leaving Arch at home. We’ll leave the door to the decking open just enough to let him in & out. I hope he doesn’t bark half the day!
I had another good night’s sleep. Day 7of my new healthy lifestyle plan. Will share this week xoxo

That sounds good, I am anxious to hear about your new plan.

Are you still trying to find a pet door for him? I have always found pet doors well worth the investment, so have the dogs.

Good luck, Cate! Hope you will feel better soon!
Thank you, Julie. I feel much better today after a day out, playing terrible golf but in good company.
hope you had a lovely time at golf.
Thanks, LaMa. It was a nice day & I got to switch off a bit. My golf is just awful though.
Sounds great cate!
I’m happy with completing week 1, successfully thanks, Liza.

Hi, Rob. My new plan is not exciting or that interesting really. It’s a work in progress. The main thing for me is that I decided to have a month off having any alcohol at all & I have done so easily for a week now. I have not missed it at all. It will be harder for others to accept I think. G will be fine with it, but having a drink when I’m out that is also low calorie is problematic. G accidentally got me a diet sarsaparilla instead of diet ginger beer yesterday. Gross! One of our playing partners after asking what I wanted & me saying “anything diet except sarsaparilla please” got me a non-diet lemon, lime & bitters (160 cals).
I haven’t got a doggy door yet as we don’t have a door that is not part of our view. Our sliding doors are large & to have one replaced with double glazing & a doggy door would be very expensive & permanent. It’s mainly that I don’t want to retract from the symmetry & balance of our house. I might see if a neighbour can build me one that fits in the middle of our 2 big sliding doors from our dining room to our decking. He’s really good at welding.
I’ll have another look at the available ones on my laptop when it’s charged.

Here you can always get a Soda Zitrone, which is just sparkling water with lemon juice. It's refreshing, not "just" water, and nobody thinks you're weird for having it. The current wave of hipster drinks is pretty hit and miss but some of them are genuinely nice and relatively low-calorie/not overly sweet.

That's impressive Cate. Hope it continues to go well. I think you giving up alcohol would be like me giving up chocolate.

Cate I think that's great and it's such a shame other people might struggle with it . I would just order a sparkling water with a slice of lemon or lime or a Diet Coke maybe. Hope it shows on the scales but you will feel wonderful one way or the other . Sometimes it's only a little tweak that is needed.
