Weight-Loss 4 Week Get-Ready-for-Summer Challenge Chat Thread

Weight-Loss
maybe my treadmill is off then... i dont understand how everyone is able to walk at 3-4 mph... i push it so that my calves are burning im walking so fast but theres no possible way i could walk at 3mph i definatley have to run... either way i suppose it doesnt matter as long as i keep pushing myself and im feeling like im working hard, it just sucks if your trying to compare yourself to see whats normal and it doesnt seem physically possible to reach those speeds especially for 2 HOURS! I cant run for more then 3-5 minutes let alone a single hour lol

The easiest way to judge is to measure a mile in your car and then walk between those points as quickly as you can and see how many minutes it takes. If it takes 15 minutes you are doing 4mph - if it takes 20 minutes you are doing 3mph. If it takes 30 minutes you are doing 2mph. Alternatively use a pedometer. Maybe check one against the other.

I do walk a lot - and it is quite possible that I can walk at a faster speed than you. I am not sure what speed I was able to do when my BMI was at your level. I really didnt care about speed until I got the treadmill and by then my BMI was quite a bit lower. When I started I went at an absolute snail's pace.

I have just counted out how many steps I am doing for some sample distance stages. I do between 22 and 23 steps per hundredth of a mile - call it 22.5 steps then.

I should add that whilst the motion of my legs and feet say that I am walking - it is a speed whereby you certainly perspire a fair bit and would not want to talk because your focus is so much needed on the exercise that you are doing. You undeniably feel that you are pushing yourself. I suspect that I would be running / jogging if I moved my feet higher and moved my centre of gravity forward - even though I might not be going too much faster - but am pretty sure that I would trip up if I tried.

3 mph should be a brisk walk.

What kind of treadmill do you have? Maybe you could go to a store and "try" one out to see if it is the same as yours regarding the exertion level.

I think it might also depend on how long you have been walking. I know when I first started 3 mph was just a dream... :)

hickgurltx, i don't know the answer sorry :(

when i am walking my speed varies between (converts between kph to mph) 4 mph and 3.5 mph both on the treadmill and outside. MotherOf2 i have short legs also, I am 5'2

Week 2

Mon - AM - walk/jog/run - 1hr 15min 4.65miles
PM - Lower body weight training / 15 mins on the cross ramp total time approx 1 hr

I'm not sure what to put as my points either as I havent done the minimum 4 hours of exercise since I've been sick this whole week. I managed to do 3 hours at the gym and lost 1 pound. I guess me and Hickgirltx are in the same situation.

I have no idea Stacy. I suspect that Claudia will be the only one that knows. Ask her the question in FB if you dont hear here.

I totally forgot this was an elimination challenege...LOL...So im assuming Im eliminated cuz I was an unfocused lazy ass last week, ha ha ha

I freely admit that I have had an unusual day today. This can also be a wonderful observation of day to day and hour to hour fluctuations which we all experience each day with our weight.

The morning was hectic. I walked 4 miles on the treadmill at 4.0mph. Walked over 1 mile to Weight Watchers. Got weighed at 9st2.5 i.e. 128.5 pounds in jeans (0.5 pounds above my WW goal weight). Walked home and did another 2 miles on the treadmill. Didnt eat anything. Walked over a mile to Slimming World. Got weighed at 9st1.5 i.e. 127.5 pounds in jeans (1.5 pounds above my SW target weight).

I have different goal / target weights as WW allow you a 5 pound either way zone and SW allow a 3 pound either way zone. While I accept that I will drift upwards - I have bigger concerns about the concept of drifting downwards and being nagged to gain weight - I really do not think that I will cope well with being told to gain. I want a single lower weight limit that and 8st11 (123 pounds) sounds as good as anything to me for that.

Anyway - I then went to the supermarket before walking the mile + home. When I got home I weighed on my own scales and it was 9st0.8 in jeans and then when I put on the shorts that I wear each day for weighing it was 8st13.6 (i.e. 125.6 pounds).

It was mid afternoon and I hadnt eaten all day - but it was an honest reading on my own good quality scales positioned in the normal place. I got on 3 times and got the same reading each time. I am taking it and have updated my ticker. It gives me a new low and the first time below 9 stone. Today's readings also put me into the territory of my goal weight.

I am in shock!!!!!!!!

We all have weeks when we lose our focus. That is part of life and trying to do something that is not one of those x days quick fix diets. Whatever happens with the challenge and eliminations (we await Claudia's statement on that!) - in general terms - if possible - try and turn the corner now and consider it a new day / new attitude - you dont need to wait until tomorrow to do that (whatever you have done earlier in the day). Seize the day and make those weight loss dreams happen. Forgive yourself for any less positive actions and aim for some of those positive behaviours. We all know what to do - it is not rocket science - eat healthily and do exercise whether you want to or not.

We all feel the same - less healthy foodstuffs try to tempt us and there are times when we would rather chill out than do some exercise.

The great thing Cerella is that you are such a busy person running around after your daughters and working shifts - even when you think that you have done very little you have probably burnt quite a few calories. You said earlier that your youngest had been sick - this will have been your prime focus and you will not have had time to do the things that are good for you. Dont criticise yourself for this - congratulate yourself for being a good and focused mother.

If she is better - if things are true to form - your girls will be dragging you out playing tennis and other calorie burning activities more than any challenge would expect of you. Do as you were doing and try to adopt the better nutritional habits that will make a huge difference. Drinking water, eating plenty of fruit and vegetables and ensuring that you have enough protein for your size etc will make the biggest difference.:hug2:

Could we separate the eating pts from the exercise pts? That way if we are good with one and not with the other, we at least get some pts. I just had to take my bonus off b/c I thought we got it for exercising at least 5hrs. I just realized we had to eat clean all 7 days as well. Could we make it 50pts for 5 days of clean eating and another 50pts for 4hrs of exercise. And then 25bonus pts for 5+hrs of exercise and another 25pts for 7 days of clean eating?

It's discouraging, I think, if we did well on one and not so well on the other that what was the point of being good on one if we've already blown our pts by not doing both. KWIM? :)

That sounds good Kimberly. ;)

I hope I'm still in this.

I'll just keep going forward w/challenge until I hear different..lol

Ms. Claudia must be a busy bee.

:)

yeah im not sure lol.. the fastest i can get before i have to start running or fall off is around 2.5 - 3 mph lol... im just going to assume that for some reason i can't walk as fast as other people until further notice lol

I agree that it would make sence to have eating and excersize points seperate so its not so all or nothing... or maybe thats just the kind of pressure we need! ponder that! lol

It would be justa matter of adding another collumn and splitting the values to achieve it. I'm in agreement on it. If Claudia is okay with it, I would recommend we do it.

BTW, Way to go Margaret.!!!!! Phenomenal job on the new low for one of the most motivated people I have ever seen. Simply beautiful!

Thanks Cabbie. I must say that I am still in shock. I cannot believe that I could ever stand on the scales and see a weight less than 9 stone!!!!!! I havent weighed that since the start of 1985!!!! OK - I accept that an afternoon weighing when you have exercised and not eaten is not standard - but as I see it if you get it 3 times you cannot deny that it happened.

I have to class my goal as firmly achievable (under more normal weighing conditions) if I just stay focused.

I tend to agree with the others that there is merit in breaking up the points so that something can be got for ticking most boxes without managing everything. Kimberly's suggestion is great. In fact - maybe it could be split down further to encourage those that cannot manage an eating or exercise clean sheet to do what they can.

Current points give no more points for 4 days of eating clean than for 1 day of eating clean - similarly no incentive to do 3hrs 50 mins of exercise over 20 mins exercise. Maybe something like:
5 points for each of 5 days eating clean plus a 25 point bonus for managing all 5 days.
10 points per hour of exercise plus a bonus of 10 points if 4 hours exercise done.

That would spread things about so that there was a wider points spread among those that did not manage to get maximum points.

The challenge is there to help people to stay focused and encourage everyone to try just a little bit harder - not massage the egos of people that are old hands at challenges and like scooping maximum points. :)

I like your idea, Margaret. What does Claudia say?? :D

 Congratulations Margaret on your fantastic accomplishment! I've told David why you're over the moon and he sends his congrats and says "well done!" :cheers2:

Oh man I'm soooo tired! I've had a busy day today and barely had time to sit here to do much internet surfing. I did however get in a 40 min. walk. My feet are killing me! I think I'm going to look into buying a really good pair of walking shoes.

Any suggestions?

Sweat Pea, just a thought. I intended to try running this year, so I went to a store specifically looking for running shoe to deal with my type of foot (heavily pronated, meaning my ankles roll inwards because of poor arches) I ended up buying ASICS Gel Foundations.
My running career was cut short (I'm still too heavy, I would be damaging my knees if I kept it up), however these have made the most supportive walking shoes I've ever had. The ankle stabilty is terrific.

Okay today's posting:
Calories 2031, 84g fat 124 g protein, 230g carbs. Very low today, because I took yesterday off, therefore I had a schedule change back over to working nights today, (took a nap in the afternoon). This is not unusual for a monday, a little odd for a tuesday though.

Did 46 minutes of cycling, and 30 minutes of weights

Oh and yesterday I went to the gym and did 30 minutes of weights after the rest of the yard work I did. Near as I see it, that puts me at 3:16 so far this week.

I have been doing awesome at the gym!! Yesterday I burnt 950 calories and today I did 760. I could have done more but the bike was hurting my behind so I just decided to stop. Eating has been pretty good..I cheated and weighed in this morning and have already lost a pound! My goal by next weigh in is 196.5 so lets hope I can make it!

Margaret, congrats on getting to goal!!!! That is amazing, especially coming from 294! I remember you from doing another challenge sometime last year and you have been so driven and I really admire that. How long has it taken you to get it all off? Anyways amazing job once again!!!!!
