Weight-Loss 4 Week Get-Ready-for-Summer Challenge Chat Thread

Weight-Loss
Got in an hour and 15 min (4 miles) walk today. Hard to believe a year ago I walked 40 miles in a 22hr period when I was a Relay For Life 24hr walker.. It was fun to see this year's 24hr walkers just starting out.

So that makes a total of 4hrs 40min of exercise so far this week. I think I can manage to get in another 20min by the end of Sunday to get the bonus pts.

Calories where at or below maintenance.

Week 1

Monday: 1 hour weights
Tuesday:1.5 hours weights
Wednesday:rest
Thursday:1 hour weights
Friday:1.5 hours weights
Saturday:45 min cardio,30 min weights
Sunday: will be a 1 hour coaching session for Benchpress

Food OK

Thanks for your positive words - Claudia and Kimberly. We are all doing really well here. These challenges always help us to stay strong in our resolve.

It would be strange for you Kimberly - seeing the 24 hour walkers setting off and remembering your great achievement last spring. As I told you at the time - I really do not know if I could do 40 miles in one day. I have never done it yet!

We arrived in Newcastle without incident and I was really proud of the way that I dealt with the whole thing. I did my 7.25 miles on the treadmill in the morning before setting out. It made me pretty rushed - but I managed to fit the packing in before Rod got home at 12.30.

I had washed the fruit that I eat in a normal day and had a plastic bag with it all in. I ploughed my way through it during the journey. I normally have some sugar free sweets every day - and I did have an extra 87 calories of Weight Watchers sugar free butterscotch on the journey compared to an average day - but I was pretty pleased with that. My calories came in within the normal range - just slightly higher than my average.

Meanwhile Rod sat next to me and ploughed his way through 8 slices of bread cut into sandwiches, 2 large bags of crisps, a bag of chocolate sweets (Nestle Munchies) and 2 small bars of galaxy chocolate. I felt extra saintly because I stayed good. At this rate he will never sort out his weight issues - but our head has to be in the right place to do it.

I will be going out walking soon - and have just rebandaged my feet. I just hope that the weather stays pretty dry as I have no treadmill and have to do it outdoors. I always wear my pedometer so I will know how much I have done. I have already done plenty for the challenge - but I have my own targets for walking. I expect a little less of myself while in Newcastle.

I never drink my water properly up here. I am not even going to try. We have to cut ourselves a little slack at times.

Normal food so far (4pm) - nowhere really to cut back on that!!!

I need a decent calorie bank as we have been invited out for a meal at the home of my friend Graham tonight. The meal is a total mystery - and I tend to eat what I am given and worry about the calorie / weight implications later. When you look as thin as anyone at the table - you would not keep friends if you insisted on saying "I am on a diet" when they had gone to that kind of effort for you.

Fitday says that I am burning 2418 calories today - the lowest quantity any day this week :( Even worse - I have just thought - there could be cake as they know that Monday is Rod's birthday.....

I know that on the week I have a huge surplus - I just hope that I dont have a silly spell and negate my efforts.

Margaret, I love the way that you post, and the idea of a calorie bank is a good one. I run into a situation on Saturdays where I drive a taxi part time. It's extremely difficult to pack a lunch, knowing that there is no guarantee where I'll be at any given moment. I try to eat healthy in terms of the places I choose, but starting with a calorie bank is a positive idea as I'm still likely to run over a bit from where my goal range is.

Today (speaking of calorie banks, I started with a 30 minute workout, followed by 16 miles of cycling (25.8K), 1 hour's time.

As long as I'm reasonable with my choices today, I should be in good shape.

See y'all, I have my points, even bonus for the week now, so I'm posting them, I may not be around on monday, I'm spending quality time with a chain saw that day cleaning up the damage done around my summer house during last winter's ice storm.

Cabbie - I hope that your cabbing is going well and life is going according to plan. We all face challenges and we need to discover a way of dealng with them for the long term. People who go on a diet for a few weeks or couple of months can hide themselves away from the most challenging situations - decline invitations and basically live in a bubble for that time. on long term projects (27 months so far for me) we need to use the time to learn to cope with the challenges. The calorie bank concept helps me not to panick too much about the non-standard events. When you have been where I have in terms of size and pretty much finally conquered it - there is an intense fear of going back there.

It sounds like today's exercise should stand you in good stead for what you face today too. The chainsaw should bring you excellent exercise for your calorie bank on Monday too.

I must admit that I was lucky tonight (it is now 1.38am and I am back from Graham's house). Graham is arguably my oldest friend in that we have known each other all our lives. We grew up next door to each other. When I was big I was pretty camera shy - and it was at his house that my before photo that I showed in my diary was taken - such is the strength of our friendship. Graham and Barbara were true friends tonight in that they served a healthy meal that must have been reasonably low calorie and was certainly delicious. I didnt like to ask about sodium so cannot be too exact about that side of things. The starter was bread and pate - but I did not have much at all. I did have 6 small olives though. The main course was grilled chicken with no skin with cous cous and a green salad with light dressing. Afterwards was a very small amount (no more than an ounce) of rhubarb crumble with 2 teaspoons of craime fraiche. Using fitday my calories come to 1748 for the day using the best estimates that I have been able to come up with. I am counting it as another day of healthy eating.

Margaret, I don't even think I could keep up with you. I don't think I've ever walked 7.25 miles in less than 2 hours - not intentionally anyway!

Today was a no exercise day for me, but hopefully I will get in another hour tomorrow. Yesterday I got in 45 min. on the treadmill, so I'm over the 4 hours of exercise, but am wanting the 5 for the weeks total.

This is the most I've exercised in months!

SweatPea - it is great that you are getting your treadmill time in and doing more exercise than you have been in the habit of doing recently.

I have to say that I can only do the speed / distance on the treadmill as it helps me to keep up the pace. Also - I could be classed as cheating by some in that I do pause it every so often - maybe every 1 mile or 2 miles in order to have a slurp of water or a quick dash to the toilet. Then I resume timing when I resume walking. My treadmill (Tunturi T60) does not pause for very long before resetting (about 1 minute) so I have to get back on pretty quickly as I like to keep the numbers going up. The "2 mile" pause is perfect for putting fat free yoghurt into the freezer to be yummy and ready to eat as my treat as my reward at the end (after weighing). I am totally a creature of habit.

I actually have slowed down a bit in that before I spent weeks away from home in February / March I used to be able to do the whole thing at 4.3 miles and now can never seem to get much done at that speed. I sometimes manage to get up above 4.0 - but never for long enough to count or get to do the whole thing there. Prior to my October flu i could do it all between 4.3 and 4.4. This is what I was saying about things getting so much harder once you break a habit.

Omega you say you go 3 or 4mph for about 2 hours... is this running for you? because i find once i get to 3mph on my treadmill i have to start running... maybe its just because i have short legs but damn! it feels like everyone has their treadmills set at much highter speads then me and i cant figure out how you guys can do it

Ok well it looks like I finished out the week with 4 hours of exercise and 5 days of eating on track.

I just found an awesome banana blueberry muffin recipe:

I used splenda instead of sugar. And used 1/2 wheat flour and 1/2 all purpose. These are very moist and delicious even with using the splenda (which I find can make drier baked goods.)

Also, my dh has been making french toast lately with egg beaters - just dip the bread in the egg beater and cook. It's so easy! He sprinkles it with cinnamon too. It's delish!

Have a great week!

I have 200 Mins. (3 hrs. 20 mins.) of fitness..

I was down 2 days with my eye issues(see my diary)

Hope I won't be kicked off!? lol

Just let me know.?.

I have a new walkin' buddy from church and I just got home and I'm BEAT!
We did 4 miles in 1 hr. and 5 mins!! We were movin' up/down those hills and all around our neighborhood including the park/pond.

We had a blast. :hurray:

We are doin' it again tomorrow. :)

Everyone is doing pretty darn good here I see! Congrat's! ;)

Well, I need to hit the shower!! LMBO!

I am afraid that i dont run. I havent ran in years. I keep threatening to run as I am pretty sure that I am probably fit enough to these days - but I just dont have the confidence to try. I suppose that you can take the extreme morbid obesity size off the body - but it is harder to take it out of the head..... It is hard to shake off over 20 years of thinking that something would probably kill you!

When I walk at 4mph it is most definitely walking - but it is very brisk walking. Walking has been central to my weightloss - and I have done an awful lot of it over the last 27 months. At first I was very slow because I started just going round the block having got that I rarely went out. I found that I was able to go further - and that was the side of it that I concentrated on increasing. I just wanted to go further each day. As soon as I could go further I did - I was increasing my distance every few days. In a comparitively short time I was going a few miles - and the weight was dropping off me like never before. I made sure that I went out walking every single day. I found that my stamina was improving so that it was less tiring than I would have ever imagined and that I had naturally speeded up without even trying. I had no idea how fast I was able to go until I got my treadmill. I got it in July after getting down to a similar size to where I am now. I have accepted that I will need to go out walking every day - pretty much for ever. Weight loss has always been particularly difficult for me as I am a PCOS lady which means that I put on weight easier than most other people and I have greater difficulty in losing weight. My hormones work against me! Walking has done this - so I basically have to keep on walking.... Anyway - I tried various speeds to see how I went - and find that I can manage to keep up with the 4mph setting ok. I never seem to want to continually go that fast when outdoors - but find that when I select that speed the treadmill takes the lead and I fit in with the speed that it goes at. It kind of forces me to push myself.

Great job getting back to the exercise Sweatpea!

So I am pleased with Week 1, I did just over 4 hours of exercise but I ate well every day. So my weight, which has been lost and regained numerous times during the week, is back to the 2.5 lbs down since the first day (147.5). Obviously water but it makes a huge difference in my clothing fit and appearance though I'm sure no one else notices but me hehe.

Keep up the great work everyone!

I did around 7.25 hours of exercise, maybe more. I ate really good for 5 days, i listened to my body and upped calories all weekend, no excessive binging, i didnt have any fast food, no pizza, or anything like that.

I'm not sure if I deserve the bonus points. So I'll leave it up to my comrades/competitors.

I had a regular size popcorn at the movies. No candy, i wanted a large icee but resisted

I had Ice cream afterward, after a walk around the mall. It was the smallest available.

Snacked on some tortilla chips on sunday, and some popcorn. I did have quite a bit, but not a whole bag or anything. and also 2 beers with the family.

RJ, to me it sounds like you did fine. Just cuz something is snack food doesn't mean its not allowed. We all know we were bad bad bad when we get that big ice cream instead of the smallest possible size, or get both the popcorn AND the candy (imagine the calories burned in your wallet from purchasing movie theatre food). You resisted and kept your snacks reasonable so I say you got the points.

As for me, I am tempted to include my daily walking to and from work of approximately 1.5 miles to get me over the 5 hours, but alas, I am still a porker despite doing this commute to work for years. So I really need 4 or 5 hours of exercise. And I feel so much better for doing the exercise and not overeating this week. It felt great to not start off monday bloated and full. I did intend to do another hour of exercise yesterday, but time just got away from me and it didn't happen. So no extra points for me :(.

Question??

I have 200 Mins. (3 hrs. 20 mins.) of fitness..

I was down 2 days with my eye issues(see my diary)

Do I not get any points at all?
I'm confused..lol...

I ate well/clean the whole time.
I have 3 hrs & 20 mins of exercise

I lost 1.6 lbs for the week and inches

I did well this week, I feel pretty good about it. I ate on plan virtually every day this week, ( 2 days I was slightly over, but by less than 100 calories both times) I got over 5 hours total time in exercising.

I lost 3 lbs (yay me!)

Today my exercise was unusual, but still very much exercise in my opinion. You all can be the jury on it.

I had to spend a bunch of time cutting limbs and trees with a chainsaw, then I had to haul the brush up the hil behind the house (200 + feet, uphill with a load, back downhill empty).

Obviously this was not constant motion steady state stuff. I stopped and rested between trips, but I spent about 4 hours at it this morning.

In the daily plate I scored it as an hour of hiking, and 30 minutes of sawing (gardening). I'm underestimating by a bit I'd say, but I'd like to use these values towards my weekly exercise points and give myself 1.5 hours so far for monday. Are we okay with this?

well ive kinda fell off the wagon in general...either i hardly eat or i eat crap, no consistancy...

i havent been taking care of myself at all:(

no exercise no sleep no eating no water

this week my plan is to get rid of sugar in general

no more pop

only fruits and veg and proteins...gonna try hard...

last week was a bust for me, today im having a cheat day and then im gonna resume on...

maybe my treadmill is off then... i dont understand how everyone is able to walk at 3-4 mph... i push it so that my calves are burning im walking so fast but theres no possible way i could walk at 3mph i definatley have to run... either way i suppose it doesnt matter as long as i keep pushing myself and im feeling like im working hard, it just sucks if your trying to compare yourself to see whats normal and it doesnt seem physically possible to reach those speeds especially for 2 HOURS! I cant run for more then 3-5 minutes let alone a single hour lol
