Nothing much new on my weight today. I have decided to up my calories a little so I will be watching. As I am well below my goal weight I do have a little cushion, getting back up into the 150s would not be a bad thing. But staying in the 140s would be fine too.

  • January 2021 averaged 155 and ranged from 149 to 160.

Good for you Angel! And Err keeps going down, I see new lows in his near future. Not for me likely though, but I don't need any new lows, just not to go up much. My new higher calorie thing is showing no effect, but its too soon to know.

Well March was a pretty good month weight wise, even with surgery not much wild swinging, not quite sure why. I know giving up diet drinks and reducing sodium helped. Cutting carbs probably did too. Now the April challenge will be to closely watch what effect my new higher calorie regieme will do.
  • August began 161, ended 159, ranged 163 to 159.
  • September began 160, ended 158, ranged 160 to 154.
  • October began 159, ended 158, ranged from 155 to 162.
  • November began 160, ended 153, ranged from 153 to 164.
  • December averaged 156 and ranged from 151 to 159.
  • January 2021 averaged 155 and ranged from 149 to 160.
  • February averaged 156 but ranged wildly 145 to 166.
  • March averaged 147, ranged from 143 to 153, the high just the one day after surgery.

Err, I looked it up and your body fat % is looking pretty good. I think you are getting to the lower end of "average" and close to "ideal". As I read the chart the ideal range for you tops out at about 20%, and you are getting close to that. The chart I am looking at is here: Useful tools and Calculators for Weight Loss . With all the muscle you have built and maintained I suspect your BMI will always be on the high end, % body fat is a much better measure of health. And I think you are doing quite well.

I am up a pound this morning and find it funny that I worry about 148 vs 147... My original pie in the sky goal was to get into the 160's, I never thought that possible, was surprised that I got into the 150s and amazed to see the 140s. I know intellectually if I were to gain 10 lbs and get back into the 150s I would be fine, I have a substantial safety margin. And I also know that as the swelling from surgery goes down I may well lose a few pounds of water weight in the next weeks. But that doesn't keep me from obsessing about any gain, no matter how small...

I'm impressed with how consistent you're weight has been lately - and that you're finding ways to maintain motivation to keep closely monitoring during maintenance.

Thanks! Yeah I'm getting close to the "ideal" body fat % range for men my age and, according to my recent dexa scan, I'm actually now in the top 34% of age-matched men. But 90% of men in America are overfat and I still am too.

While body fat % is a better measure of overfatness & obesity than BMI, it too has it's limitations and my well above average lean mass is skewing the results. A 5'7" man weighing 120 lbs at 20% body fat fits inside the ideal bmi & body fat % ranges and carries 24 lb of fat. According to the dexa scan, I'm carrying 45+ lb of fat. My body does not need those extra 21 lb of fat - in fact they're detrimentally adding pressure against my blood vessels resulting in me being borderline hypertensive.

A better metric in my opinion is the fat mass index which is just like bmi except it uses only your fat mass instead of the entire body mass. The 75th percentile for men my age is 6 - about 38 lb of fat at 5'7" while the ideal is more like 3 - about 19 lb of fat (pretty close to the 120lb guy @ 20% bf). I'm aiming for 20, but will be happy with anything under 30.

Hey Misty, good to see you here, will you be with us a while? I hope so, I find it helpful. And you are welcome here with or without "detailed numbers". I try to post everyday, but will never be able to match Err for his numbers and reasoned analysis.

Err, thanks for the explanation, it is interesting. I think you are right since the average American is overweight you need to get below average body fat to be fit. For me for many years just getting somewhere close to average would have seemed great, probably like you, I spent most of my life a lot heavier than average and was self conscience about it. Now my world view has changed, and I venture to guess yours too. Hey I had never heard of a "Dexa scan" until I started reading your writings. I looked it up and it does sound like a good idea. Where or in what kind of place do you get yours done? What does one cost? With or without other consultation?

Nothing new on weight here, and Err I am not always motivated to weigh in and record, just do it. I am a creature of habit. I am happy with the new found stability. If I had to guess it is mostly from giving up diet drinks and reducing sodium. Lowing carbs may have contributed a bit too, but my carbs are not super low, just lower than they were. I have restarted milk products, ate dairy based yogurt the past two days and other than liking it more no changes. Maybe I am ok with dairy stuff?

Thanks, Rob! Yes, I want to continue to post everyday or whenever I remember.

Agreed, nice to have you here Misty!

I starting posting more data when I was getting frustrated with weight plateaus - seeing some progress helps keep me motivated even when the scale is being stubborn. I hope it isn't overwhelming for anyone else though...

Hey I had never heard of a "Dexa scan" until I started reading your writings. I looked it up and it does sound like a good idea. Where or in what kind of place do you get yours done? What does one cost? With or without other consultation?
I get mine done at a nearby university, no consultation required. But dexa scans are available from many places and prices & options can vary so if you were interested it might make sense to call around. But as an example here's one place in SLC that is charging $25: Advanced Medical Weight Loss - DEXA Scan

Other places that are probably more oriented towards healthcare uses (bone density) rather than body composition: Bone Density (DEXA) Scanning/Imaging | University of Utah Health

Criticism of dexa:

In response, I'd point out that dexa is extremely accurate at bone density and very very accurate at body fat, but that the confusion comes from lean mass (which is everything that isn't body fat). As you know personally, your body can retain lots of water and drop it suddenly and while this is a loss of lean mass, it isn't a loss of muscle mass.

The place I go to breaks down lean mass further into skeletal muscle mass which helps track muscle changes regardless of colon load or water retention. But most dexa scans don't show that.

Down a pound and a little already! Good for Misty. Hope you keep it up, you won't go down every day, but I find this a good way to see what's happening longer term, whilst better understanding the short term bouncing.

Err, thanks for the Dexa info, will see if I can find anything locally. Salt Lake is a possibility, but its over an hour's drive. I did see that in one of the reviews of our local hospital someone mentioned the Dexascan, so maybe they can do it.

Nothing new here, actually up a few tenths, but in my whole number rounding, no change.
  • April
    • 1 - 147 lbs
    • 2 - 147 lbs
    • 3 - 148 lbs
    • 4 - 148 lbs
    • 5 - 148 lbs
After losing over 160 lbs I began maintenance in July 2020 and am trying to stay somewhere in or close to the 150s.

April 5: 137.2 lbs
