Weigh Yourself Everyday (or frequently) Club

Nothing new here, which is good. My hernia surgery is Thursday and I expect that may cause me to gain some water weight. Last surgery I had did and it took about a month for it to go away, so things could change. Also I am now not exercising and will not be able to do much for a while, that could have its effect as well. We'll see.

Also I am now not exercising and will not be able to do much for a while, that could have its effect as well.

Are you lowering your calories at all for the time being?

Err, you seem to have stabilized around 220, at your new higher calorie diet that's not bad. I am sure that the difference between 220 and 215 is not fat.
Are you lowering your calories at all for the time being?
Not yet, but I am thinking about it. I have been averaging around 1,750, after surgery I might drop to 1,500 or 1,600 for a while. Though to be honest I think I feel better at 1,750 than 1,500, but I don't want to gain fat. We'll see.

Weight is same, same here, as it should be!

1 more day of maintenance to go (I'm actually looking forward to going back on a deficit)...

Err, you seem to have stabilized around 220, at your new higher calorie diet that's not bad. I am sure that the difference between 220 and 215 is not fat.
Yeah, it is reassuring that my weight hasn't kept going up after the initial 3 day rise. I notice a few changes though - I look a bit more puffy everywhere (e.g. previously I could see 2-3 muscle defining lines on my forearms all the time, now it is only when I flex) and I'm once again very hot at night (I always have been except this last year+ of dieting has made me run noticeably cooler). The later makes it hard to sleep which isn't helping me recover from workouts as well as I'd like, so I'm hopeful that switching back to a (smaller) deficit will help there.

Back into the 210s, even with your calorie increase, not bad Err. Will you find it hard to drop your calories back to the deficit? For me lowering calories can be hard. Nothing new in my own weight, just bouncing around.

Maintenance week is over and I'd call it a success. I was an estimated 670 calories short on the first day, but was within + or - 50 calories of my estimated expenditures for the next 6 days and from there hit no new lows. For the week my average daily calorie intake was 3958 consumed against 4061 burned.

With 50 lb of body fat, I can efficiently burn no more than 1000-1600 calories from my fat stores in a given day so I'll be aiming for a daily ~750-1000 calorie deficit for this next week. I will also be temporarily tapering down my exercise to be well-rested for my quarterly VO2 max test (and dexa scan) next Friday, the combined reductions should be putting me somewhere around 3000 calories on average.

I don't anticipate returning to a deficit will be difficult because I've had to cut back on veggies & resort to calorie dense foods throughout the day and especially at night (e.g. eating 500+ calories worth of almonds & raisins before bed) to hit these recent numbers. I'm actually looking forward to getting more vegetables - crazy...

People who say nobody craves broccoli have never got their bodies hooked on veggies and then withdrawn them for a week. It's not quite the same feeling as craving chocolate but it's a craving nonetheless!

I'm actually looking forward to getting more vegetables - crazy...
LaMa is right and I understand, I am really missing veggies, but for right now cutting them out has helped my hernia. After surgery and a bit of healing I expect to get back to them. It feels good to be able to eat a lot of something without too many calories. After doing some research I have found the combination of a lot of vegetables and a bit of constipation (which I have off and on) can be hard on hernias, increases gut size and pressure on the hernia. So it was not just my imagination...

Well my preop weight is 145, last time I had surgery I pretty quickly put on about 10 pounds of water weight, post surgical edema. So that could happen again, but I am told this hernia surgery is less traumatic than the prostate surgery so maybe not, we will see. I have never heard of post surgical edema and did not know to expect it, Margret educated me here. Another thing I learned on the forum. I check into the hospital a little after noon and should be home by 6 pm. In the meantime I cannot eat or drink anything, so it will be a thirsty hungry morning... Will try to weigh in tomorrow morning, but am not sure how I will feel at that time. Probably will be ok.

Holding fine Err, I am sure it will be going down again soon.

Well I got the postop bounce I was expecting, about 10 pounds. I know its mostly water, since the surgery I have been drinking a lot of liquids and only peeing a little. Not a whole lot of pain, but it is over a fair sized part of my belly, probably all swelling. This time around I am not worried about it, knowing why really helps. And I know from the last time it may go up even more. I weight just before going the the hospital, several hours after my regular weigh in time yesterday and was down to 153, a new low, so I changed it. But the 2 lbs I lost from my regular time to this one is also probably all water. Several hours without drinking anything or eating will do that to you. Kind of artificial, dehydration and starvation are not part of my long term plan.

You're a fascinating case study my friend, and I'm thankful that you're sharing all this information with us.

That is interesting Rob, I wouldn't have thought it would happen so quickly. I have read just getting on IV fluids can cause people to gain 3-5lb and sometimes 7-10. So it may be that or a combination of that and your body swelling/healing...

Err headed down again after the maintenance week! Good to see.
You're a fascinating case study
This morning I wish I was a little less fascinating... Weight dropped a little, I kept my belly ice packed all night and the swelling is down a little, that might explain the "loss", who knows. It still hurts a lot, but a bit less than last night... Still on pain killers, I hate that, I can enjoy a recreational drug now and then, but not for long and not when I feel bad!

I can't really explain the fluctuations, especially not the drop from 124 to 120, I must just have been retaining water. Still 8' 7" now, I'm pleased.

142.8 : )
: ) indeed! Nice, well below me now, good for you.

Good to see you trending down more Err.

Welcome Ellyra! And don't worry too much about unexplainable fluctuations, they just happen. Posting daily here has helped me learn a bit about that. I now better understand my own fluctuations, but I also know that to expect them, and to expect some to be unexplainable. Stick with us and I think you'll learn more too.

And now onto my own unexplainable, I am back down into my postop range, and its only been 3 days, a few hours less actually. And I know the swelling is not down... So much for all I thought I knew about postoperative edema... Err, maybe you are right the big postop bounce up happened more as a result of the IV fluids than swelling...? Wish I had weighed when I first got home, but I know I went up 10 lbs in the 18 hours between my pre and postop weight. This is very different from my last surgery where I gained well over 10 lbs and took more than a month to lose it... Oh well, good news is I am off the painkillers for 12 hours now and making it, slept most of the night. It still hurts, but is now bearable.

I'm giving the myfitnesspal app a try since it syncs automatically with my Garmin watch. For the time being, I'm duplicating my efforts in my existing Livestrong Myplate app and I've been surprised by just how far apart the two calorie counting apps can be. Most items are dead on, but a handful will be off by 10-50 calories which adds up over the course of a day. For example, on the 26th Myplate put me at 2802 while myfitnesspal put me at 2654 (MFP was 148 less than MP) and on the 27th Myplate had me at 4046 while myfitnesspal had me at 3732 (MFP was 314 less than MP). I suspect myfitnesspal's numbers are more accurate, but I can't be certain.

Currently I'm targeting a 750 calorie deficit so this variation shouldn't prevent me from losing weight, but when I have less fat to lose my target deficit will eventually decline to under that 300 calorie variation. It also is something to keep in mind when comparing calorie numbers from other people.

I use myfitnesspal, the only problem I have with it is some days it can be a bit hard to connect to. Not so much lately. Calorie counts are always half guess, even within myfitnesspal you can find a lot of variation and some errors. For example I just looked up hardboiled egg, and found 30+ entries to choose from all the way from 17 to over 100 calories per egg. The lowest are obviously wrong, as likely are the highest, I unusually pick something in the middle and stick to it. I have found that so long as I am consistent tracking my calories is a big help, and the numbers probably average about right. The real test is to see how a given calorie intake effects your weight, weight is something you can more accurately measure. Problem is that only works long term because of all the other short term factors that effect weight. And I think accurate calorie burn is even harder to get right, but again tracking things consistently and watching your weight longer term it works. Funny how even after knowing all this I can still worry about as few as 20 calories one way or another... Not a bad thing, it means I am paying attention.

So Err, I think all your tracking and statistics are great, and have really helped you. I wish I had done as well. However day to day precision is not something I would expect or that you probably need. Consistent tracking and watching the impact on your weight trends are what matters and you are as good at that as anyone I have seen.

Nothing new on my weight here today.
