Weigh Yourself Everyday (or frequently) Club

Wow Rob, that is strange. Has salt intake changed? Yesterday's from your diary was <2000 so I wouldn't normally think so.

Here's a weird thought - did the weight gain start about when you started eating grapefruit?

Hey Err, thanks for getting back.

Yes to your questions, my salt intake has increased, I am eating more raw cucumbers and zucchini and I probably over salt them. And yes the weight gain start does more or less start with my increased grapefruit eating. I know salt can add water weight, and am cutting back on that now. However I had not thought about the effect of grapefruit, do you think there is a possible connection? Why would that be? Maybe I will skip the grapefruit today. I do not believe I have had a day of 2,000 calories or more in over a year and a half, probably never over 1,800.

I know grapefruit can react with a lot of medicines and, even independent of that, sometimes cause hormonal imbalances. My hypothesis: grapefruit may be causing a rise in estrogen levels (it doesn't cause your body to make more, but it slows your body's ability to get rid of it) which can cause increased water retention (e.g. women often bloat right before their menstrual cycle).

Thanks Err, that is interesting, I will try reducing the grapefruit intake. Sodium is a bigger problem than I had realized, or reducing it will be anyway. The salt is easy and obvious, but it seems the sardines I have been eating have a lot, 700 mg in a can. Also the frozen spinach has almost 500. And lots in my favorite hot sauces, Tabasco ect... Pickled things too. The only good news so far is that diet soft drinks have less than I had thought... 35 or 40 mg per can. Will try tracking and reducing for a time.

Nice new low, your body fat keeps dropping!

Well down some today - yesterday I cut back on the salt and carbs and eliminated the grapefruit. Also cut calories a little. It seems to have helped. Will keep on this track for a while. Still in the 160s, but at the low end now...
  • August began 161, ended 159, ranged 163 to 159.
  • September began 160, ended 158, ranged 160 to 154.
  • October began 159, ended 158, ranged from 155 to 162.
  • November began 160, ended 153, ranged from 153 to 164.
  • December averaged 156 and ranged from 151 to 159.
  • January 2021 averaged 155 and ranged from 149 to 160.
  • February
    • 1 - 162 lbs
    • 2 - 161 lbs
    • 3 - 163 lbs
    • 4 - 166 lbs
    • 5 - 161 lbs
After losing about 160 lbs I began maintenance in July 2020 and am trying to stay somewhere in or close to the 150s.

Vic, Err, and LaMa, congrats all around. New lows abounding!! :beerchug:

And I am back into the 150s, its been a strange ride. Still a little higher than I would like, but back in the right range! Cutting the salt and eliminating grapefruit seems to have made a difference. I may try eating one grapefruit a day for a while, I do like them. When I was gaining I was eating about 5 a day...

Oh wow, that´s a small meal´s worth of grapefruit! I was going to ask if you´d consider going keto to deal with your appetite but that´d mean cutting most of that delicious fruit.

Hey Angel, good to see you here! Those look like nice new lows LaMa and Vic! Good work. And to Err also a new highBIA low, and holding near the 230 mark!

I am down to 156 this morning, that's 10 lbs down in 3 days; and back into the mid 150s where I think belong. It was a strange ride up and down, I guess it has to have been some combination of the salt and grapefruit. A lesson learned I guess...

And yes LaMa, I was eating a lot of grapefruit, just kind of assuming it was good for me... I have done Keto before, but not this time around, I have lost weight on it, but not kept it off. Does it help make you less hungry? I had assumed that because you can't eat as much volume without the carbs it would have the opposite effect, but I don't really know.

I´m no keto expert but I´m pretty sure that one of the most often cited advantages is the reduction in appetite. I´m sure Tru could tell you more about that though.

a little disappointed but oh well
Hey Angel, you are doing fine. At 1100 calories you are losing fat, no doubt, but it may take a little while to show up on the scale. The fat loss is important, what the scale says day to day not so much.

I find weighing everyday helps me better understand my own weight fluctuations, the problem I have with only weighing infrequently is I am not sure if the weight is really representative or part of one of my ups and downs. Lately my weight has been changing a lot, by weighing everyday it helps me not to panic and to know what is and isn't real. Doesn't answer all the questions, but it helps me. It also helps me with accountability, its harder to let things slide when you know you will be weighing and posting it again soon.

Give it a try for a while, it may help you too.
