I seem to hit plateaus the moment I increase my calories even modestly

There is a lot to be said for the notion of finding the sweet spot which is the highest amount of calories you can eat and still lose an acceptable amount of weight. It is very tempting to eat as low calorie as you can stand and feel sure of getting a good loss - but your body can get used to managing on less calories. A trainer called "Steve" used to make a lot of postings on this forum - and he helped me a lot. There are still a lot of sticky threads in some of the sections that he wrote.

So I think we can safely say sodium is not the primary cause of these plateaus.
 
I wouldn't call what you are seeing as a plateau - this is just the 4th day with the same weight and before that you were 2 pounds higher...
It is quite normal for weight loss to come in little jumps like that - I get that all the time...

For instance - my weight is down today... But 10 minutes earlier as I first got up I weighed myself and the weight was 13st 12.0 for the 4th day in a row... I actually weighed myself five times and three of them were 13st 12.0 - the other two weighings were a little lower... I came down and then realised that I wanted to go back to the toilet. I had a poo and thought that it was worth weighing again... I got on the scales three times and each time was 13st 11.25. Naturally I preferred this number :)

In my experience toilet activity is certainly a factor worth noting as you try and understand how your weight is coming down. Our weight goes up as food weight as we eat and goes down when we go to the toilet. Sometimes drinking extra water can help keep our bowels regular - as can our choice of food.

Normal wobble up today. Actually quite lucky as yesterday was on empty and we had roast chicken yesterday and the chicken we bought was labelled "stock brined"... I was wondering what the sodium in the brine would do.

I have now completed 1 week of the latest higher calorie experiment. If this plateau doesn't break this next week, I'll revert back to ~1350 calories

More social stuff creeping in now. I'm still hanging about on the low side of 9 stone though so that is fine for now. I'm going away again next weekend so that makes it more difficult to focus.

You are right, even in times when I was loosing a lot of weight I had some ups and downs. You are headed down, I don't think it will be long before you see it on the scale again.

I am up 2 more pounds this morning. I did not even want to make this post but thought I had to. It is a bit confusing I do not believe I am eating too much, guess I need to think about all the times I have counseled others to be patient and be patient myself...
