Wrangell:
My friendly comment to FF wasnt addressed to you. And, I believe you owe independent respect to a statement and/or post made to another forum member that didnt concern you and which were made in mutual humor, and subsequently not subject to outside defensive mechanisms by another forum member nor a form of a personal attack.
Why you are choosing to personally and "respectfully" attack me is truelly only known to you and subject to my interpretation and possible assumtive thoughts based upon the feedback construction you give me.
Your first post in this thread the other day could have been avoided if you would have first just educated yourself on the contents of the entire thread. I have some suspect in your interior motives and purpose, but my interior and exterior motives within this thread are not suspect as I have clearly outlined my motive and purpose. If you dont like the overall purpose, this is your entitlement. If you dont like the contents, this is your indidvidual perception. With these perceptions and dislikes in mind, your cure to this disease, is not to view this thread and not to contaminate it with like thoughts. I suspect this could make you happier. The future, however, will deliver the true emotion.
First of all, there was no personal attack. I simply asked if your comment to FF was an attempt at humor - as it seemed otherwise ( at least to me ). Secondly, I asked - " with all due respect ' - what grade you were in as a simply query of your background - mostly as a result of how you structure posts, the use of " Rock On " & " Dude " ( i.e as this is what my 17 & 18 year olds often might say ), etc. etc. No offense intended. And, I have read your thread actually.
After reading it, I only first posted a comment after you said..........
" I am one of those that do not have sympathy for one that cant handle their diet..... sympathy isnt what one needs "
" Most of us understand what causes diet complications; understanding isn't what one needs "
I for one, have a slightly different view - at least on this point. I DO have sympathy for those who have a tough time sticking to a diet or meeting their diet goals. And depending on the context, I think sympathy and empathy for the many failures one may face along the road toward their goals has it's place. Behavior modification that results in sustainable change is wrought with varying degrees ups and downs, of 2 steps forward and 1 step back etc. etc.
Ditto for understanding. I find " understanding " is a key component for sustained change IMO. If one is trying to reach goals set out by a third party or trainer, then you are right , all you need is ' action ' and blind obedience. The ' just do it ' approach. But, if people are left to their own devices, knowledge is very important. This is benefit of forums like this in which specific advice can be given with to respect to " hows " and ' why " at heart of the science behind health and fitness. There are good & bad and optimal and mythical approaches one might employ in attempts to reach one's goal. if you are trying to meet your goals on your own - one has to have an " understanding " of all such things IMO.
I'd also suggest one has to gain some knowledge of what it means to set realistic expectations and to develop a knowledge of how to manage those expectations. To the extent we have control of and can directly determine the consequences of our actions , not everyone will always meet their goal. All these multiple ' ra - ra ' ' cheerleading ' quotes you endlessly cite - and that I too once used when I was coaching 25 years ago and subsequently stopped - MAY have their place in confirming what is possible under certain circumstances. But, they do not work in all cases and are limited as a motivational tool based on my experience coaching ( and based on some advice we got from sports psychologists ).
Wrangell, I think you should be rewarded for the steps you have taken the past couple of days in feeding in a negative atmosphere in a positive environment; therefore, I give you +1 rep for the path you are following because you very much deserve it. I bet you may think this is weird too. But, philosophically I do not and can purposely explain this if you dont understand (I mean this with respect).
Actually, as I pointed out above - I simply feel that motivating people to reach health & fitness goals by way of behavior modification is a very complex undertaking and as a result can be a very long journey for some people. This is why I tend to have a higher tolerance level for " sympathy " and " knowledge " in contrast to what youcited in your quotes. In fact, the only reason I responded in the first place, was to ask you about those 2 very points and so that i could expand on those points a bit more.
Throughout this thread its intendend purpose is outlined; therefore, I am not going to address it again. Anyone serious about diet and training understands the mental complications internally that come into play that bring about positive or negative reaction. And, if one finds this weird in addressing this very serious core issue when talking diet and training, then, I suspect this is sort of weird in the sense of being just close minded.
I can't speak for the other poster as to what he meant by " weird " , but the " weird " is in no way in reference to the intent of the thread at all IMO. We all agree that any thread that discusses health and fitness issues has to opportunity to provide some value. As for this thread, I seems your intention is to provide some kind of daily motivational / inspirational shot in the arm for those who may need it. And that intent is anything but weird - but rather, very commendable. Well done. The weird ( at least for me ) has only to do with how the posts themselves are structured - the seemingly endless barrage of quotes representing a variety of different themes seems to blur the focus a bit and the message tends to be drowned out in the animated cheer leading of positive thinking rhetoric by way of motivation by quotes. In other words, the presumed intent of your message is ' spot-on '.....it's just the delivery is ( at times) al over the map .... rambling, disjointed etc. etc.
Wrangell, I wish you the best to open your mind to the surroundings, and maybe looking at a few statements within this thread will assist you.
Nothing in this thread assists me in any way ( so far ). Been there / done that. For example...I put much less emphasis on ' motivational ' quotes as a tool in goal setting and motivating people than you do. But that's just me.
I would hope that you too would " open your mind to the surroundings " and be willing to engage in dialogue not only with posters who support some of the philosophies and statements you make , but also to those who may have questions about them or even those who might challenge them in some way.
This is a forum after all.
I would appreciate if you would not hijack my thread. If this is not what your doing directly or indirectly, then lets forgive this aforementioned statement.
Well, I'm not. This is simply another thread open to feedback. Initially, I simply had a somewhat different view on the topics of sympathy and knowledge - prompting my post to ask you to elaborate on your statements.
Wrangell, I hope you had a very, very, good day. In addition, I hope you are progessing nicely with the goals you have set forth for yourself.
No worries there...I met all my personal health and fitness goals and coaching goals years ago.
