Weight-Loss Summer Shake-Up Challenge Chat Thread

Weight-Loss
Karl - When I started on my project I used to have a kagoule that kept the sweat inside - so I wore it when it rained and got soaked through just the same.... I got a new one when I was small enough to get an element of choice - but choices are limited here when you are above 3XL (whatever you can find on the internet). It is no fun getting drenched. It certainly sounds like you are getting some great work-outs there. I must admit that I am useless when it comes to taking my own pulse... I can just never find it... I am stuck having to use that numbering system for how much you feel worn out. My treadmill has a HRM as part of the kit - but I must admit that I rarely hook it up. I just walk as fast as my little legs will take me and hope for the best.

Kimberly - Well done for doing pretty well on your points - but yes - you will be on beans Wed/Thurs/Fri to get those points because it has to be split across three days. Get ready to fall off your chair! I dropped a point yesterday! How often have you ever known me to drop challenge bonus points? Well I didnt manage to have my water allocation. I always manage to do it at home - but it is really hard to do in Newcastle. Well the days so far have been a major struggle and I just gave up yesterday and went to bed.

You dont need me to mention my trips out to be reminded of your UK holiday. You have a constant reminder with little May.

We have also been to Bamburgh and Seahouses this week - but the weather has been far from acceptable. Still - we will not get back to Greece this summer so we have to cope with whatever weather England throws at us. It makes sense for us to spend time in the north east because it is good to combine a break from home with checking up on my parents.

Heather - I am useless at imposing deadlines - so if you let me know when your scoresheet is up to date for last week I will revisit things and work out your points. It is great that you are still doing our challenge. The other challenge that you have going with your husband sounds really good. I wish that Rod would go on something similar with me. I am useless at visiting diaries these days too. Sometimes there are just not enough hours in the day to do everything.

I would love to join in on this challenge but I'm not quite sure how everything works. It's been said that a member can join at any time but does that mean I have to start with Week One's challenges? Also, how do I get access to the "scoresheets" and are they simple to use? I know there's probably a newbie post about all this somewhere but I'm having a hard time navigating the site as I'm new...any help would be much appreciated and I'm ready to get started right away!

Welcome to our challenge. Of course we would love you to join in.

There is a scoresheets thread http://weight-loss.fitness.com/club-challenges/32212-summer-shake-up-challenge-scoresheets.html and you need to go into there and copy/paste a scoresheet into that thread. You then click on edit and update it every time you want to log that you have done anything.

We are all working on week 4 and you will be too - but it is an accumulative challenge so you will actually find yourself doing the new habits that people started in weeks 1,2,3. Since you have no fruit and veg in your week 1 list - you should easily get your 5 new fruit/veg points.

This week you will be getting points for
eating beans ----- week 4 new habit
having sufficient calcium ----- week 3 habit reinforcement points
drinking water to allocation ----- week 2 habit reinforcement points
eating 5-a-day ----- week 1 habit reinforcement points
posting a dip recipe ---- extra week 4 bonus
having 5 different types of fruit/veg (not in wk1 list which is empty for you) ----- extra week 4 bonus
doing exercise ----- we have this every week

Start collecting points today...

The explanations of these bonuses are in that scoresheet thread - so read through there reading the first bit and then starting at week 4 (and then checking up what was written in the other bonuses to know what you are reinforcing).

If you have any questions - just post in here and we will help you as much as we can.

The points are just a bit of fun as there are no prizes (the only prize is healthy weight control and we should all get that linked directly to how hard we work). I give out so many points that we all drop some along the way. I dropped a point yesterday! It therefore shouldnt matter that you start off behind others.

You can do this Babe. I'm glad you are stepping back in. :grouphug:

Congratulations on a really good day. Very well done. String together some days like that and all your weight loss dreams will come true very quickly. Nothing happens overnight - but I swear - the last 28 months have really flown by for me. Keep at it and it really will happen for you too.

I have just posted the bonus information for the week starting Saturday 25th July in the scoresheet thread. It is another one where I have been Queen Copycat and taken it word for word from one of Kimberly's challenges.

WEEK 5
Fibre is important in any diet, whether you're trying to lose weight or not. This week's bonus is to eat at least 25g of fibre each day. You'll get 3 points for each day that you do this.

The fact that we have already put in a lot of work on the fruit and vegetable element of our diets should make this not too onerous.

So - eat 25g fibre/day to collect 21 points.

Reinforcing previous bonuses, I will give 1 point for each day that you have 5-a-day, 1 point for each day that you drink your allocation of water, 1 point for each day that you have sufficient calcium and 1 point per ½ cup of beans (max 3 cups) giving a possible maximum 27 points.Anyone reporting a 3 litre lower level of water drinking will earn half a point for each day.

ADDITIONAL ONE-OFF WEEK 5 BONUS
We will continue the extra fruit/veg bonus as there is a truly enormous selection. I will give 2 points for each different item of fruit /veg that we eat a portion of during week 5 – maximum 5 items.

Wk5---0hrs 00mins----ssmtwtf---123456---ssmtwtf---ssmtwtf---ssmtwtf---newveg*0------
If someone completes all of their tasks I would expect their Wk4 main scoresheet line to look as follows:
Wk5---5hrs 00mins----FFFFFFF---BBBBBB---CCCCCCC---WWWWWWW---VVVVVVV----newveg*5-----

Ate well today, did have a cheesebuger from the grill though :drool5:, but had it with salad, and tracked it so life is good.

Was running around taking care of financial crap this evening so I had to cut down my ride length. Only did 18.5 miles today, but did it in 68 minutes, so my speed and intensity level was good. Also did a short half assed lift at the gym. Just hit the big pull muscles, 4 exercises total, lat pull downs, chest supported rows, standing rows, and single arm biceps curls on the cable crossover machine. Like I said, short on time.

Love it! Just went shopping tonight and the supermarket had a big sale on Fiber One products. I stocked up not knowing this coming week was the fibre week..lol. Perfect timing! :sifone: I will probably be getting double the 25g.

Things only going so-so for me.

The bean thing is not going well.
Have also only eaten 2 new items this week so far.
Everything else is going not too bad.

I had a solid 1 hour walk this morning, and just got back from an hour in the gym tonight, so that's good.

Karl - It sounds like your project is really going well. The cheeseburger sounds yummy and tracking does make the world of difference between feeling bad and good about such treats. It is always good to have such things with salad instead of chips. I know that some of our butchers here sell burgers which are guaranteed to just have lean meat and no hidden cereal added so can be a great option for weight control. They are certified by Slimming World which is one of our slimming clubs here. I became quite hooked on burgers and sausages from a SW butchers until I twigged that my weight was going up because I hadnt taken into account the query over the sodium content. I hate the fact that I am so sodium sensitive...

Kimberly - I always anticipated that you would find next week easy. It is great that you have just stocked up at bargain prices though. With my standard fruit and vegetable consumption levels I expect to find it pretty easy too.

Cord - Well done on the exercise. I'm sorry to hear that a couple of challenge things are not going quite as well as you would like. One or two legumes that you have not already had would tick both the bean eating and new fruit/veg boxes. Also - remember on the new fruit/veg aspect that they can all be fruit if you want - as I removed the restriction after week 2. Also different varieties are fine - so galia melons, cantaloupe melon, water melon, honeydew melon all count as different. I keep seeing new things to have and am loving the experience. Not everything is yummy - I have to say that I have no plans to ever buy curly kale ever again... At least I have tried it now so know what it is like.

If we take the half full approach - that probably means that the water, 5-a-day and calcium are all going pretty well. :)

I have a local butcher in the next town over who is terrific to buy from. Truly one of those old school family run businesses. You ask for lean hamburg and he grabs the beef, trims off all the fat and grinds it right there in front of you.

I would be there all the time. You could be sure that he didnt add sodium or anything.

Weigh-in day this morning.

I finally broke through my stall! 267 lbs!

Admittedly, that was after working out and before breakfast, so I may have shed a bunch of water, but It's still good.

And the impedance tester at the pharmacy gave me 31.6% body fat, down from 36% at the end of May. But again, I was probably a touch low on water at the time, so I don't know what to make of it for sure. Maybe I should try it some more over the next few days.

And as of today I'm on holiday again, so life is good.

I thought that everyone did all their weighing after working out but before breakfast. I always do.

I would stick to the winning formula and keep weighing then into the future. If nothing else it is good for the morale to think of our weight as the lowest that it can be.

In fact if you were like me - if it was a special weighing (I weigh every day but count my slimming club weighing as a special one) - you would have a special meal that you have the night before too. I cannot think of any other weighing rituals. Apart from the fact that when I weigh at home I wear shorts whatever the season and also get on the scales multiple times until I have managed to get the same reading on three seperate occasions....

LOL - Now I have you really scared about the forum company that you keep!!!

Well done on getting through your stall. That is great news.

Enjoy the fact that you are on holiday. How long are you on holiday?

My weight news is not so good. Nothing to worry about - but certainly nothing to cheer about either.

I am in Newcastle but went to the local Slimming World group tonight. I normally weigh at 12.30pm - but tonight I had to weigh at 6pm. Naturally this fact did not help my weight as I couldnt put off eating / drinking until after I had been weighed. Add in that my TOM is due very soon (although not here yet) and a noticeable gain was a certainty.

I had weighed several times before I went because I do not have to go every week - as I am a target member - but enjoy going and like the accountability of knowing that I have been weighed by an independant person / organisation. I know that I cannot hide my head in the sand. I have to pay every week if my weight goes above 9st3 i.e. above 129 pounds.

Well I weighed in tonight at 9st3 exactly. I was thankful that my scales were accurate - but I knew that it was a close thing and was relieved to see the weight come up not outside my zone... It is hard to trust even accurate home scales if they are in another location.

I am not changing my ticker though as I prefer to leave that nearer what I get normally. I was under my goal weight at my ticker weight as recently as Monday morning this week.

Normally I do weigh in before breakfast, but I don't usually work out beforehand, and I specifically didn't drink any water during or after my swim precisely because I knew I was going to weigh myself later.

I only weigh myself once a week, unless some other circumstance warrants it. My only ritual is that I take my shoes off.
And this time I was so surprised by the result that I did run it three times, and got the same number each time.

Sorry you didn't get ideal results yourself, but as you said, you knew a gain was a certainty, and you did hold within your target zone. That's good.

I am on 12 days holiday, during which we will go to Vancouver for a few days and throw a birthday party for my daughter - the rest will be fence-building and general lying about at home.

My only ritual is that I take my shoes off.

LOL - I am sure that no-one imagined for a second that I weighed with shoes on. I was so stunned a couple of months ago when I saw someone at my slimming club do that - I yelled out! She seemed happy - but we all talked about her after she left a couple of minutes later. English eccentricity is alive and well in Sunbury....

I have updated my scoresheet up to the end of Friday (though it isn't quite over yet).

You won't hear from me again until Wednesday evening at the earliest, as the family and I are off to Vancouver for a few days. Will, among other things, be celebrating our daughter's sixth birthday.

Don't expect that I'll be able to keep up with all the challenge stuff, but I will do what I can.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Thanks for getting the scoresheet updated. I hope that you have a great week too.

Have a great trip to Vancouver. The sixth birthday celebrations sound like lots of fun. I can well understand that some of the challenge stuff will be tricky while away from home.

We are still in Newcastle and thus far have been managing pretty well - all things considered... At least the challenge stuff has been mostly managed thus far.... I am just pleased that I am not counting calories at the minute.... I know that my yoghurts cover my calcium and really all that has been needed for the challenge is to have certain things and not a restrition with anything....

It is my intention to just log my yoghurts / fruit / veg into fitday and see where that gets me with fibre. If I am covered I will not log more.... I dont think that I would feel comfortable with my calorie total this weekend.

Thus far I have stuck to healthy food - but had as much as I would like... I have also kept up my walking each day. Yesterday everyone was expecting me to be drenched when I got home because there was a very heavy short shower of rain lasting about 10 minutes. I was actually dry because I had popped into the bank to pay in a few cheques and had been kept waiting in the queue for ages. I had actually been irritated when I was kept waiting for so long. Anyway - when I came out everywhere was wet and puddled...

We are eating out at the home of friends tonight - so the calorie needs are a bit of a mystery. I will hopefully cover my fibre before I go.

Tomorrow continues the uncertainty regarding calorie needs. It will be my 50th birthday. It is hard to believe that I will be half a century old... I certainly dont feel it. My parents are keen that we should eat out then too - this time with them. My weight was at the top of my SW zone on Thursday - so I am torn in my feelings about all this eating out.
