Let me know if you spot any of my mistakes.

I have a question about this week's challenge.

How are we defining beans? Is it any member of the family Fabaceae?

The study gives some uncertainty over the effectiveness of black eyed peas - but the interview speaks positively about split pea soup and chickpeas... I would therefore say that legumes not specifically called "beans" were acceptable. I will therefore rule that any members of the fabaceae family may be used for this challenge.

I actually heard of similar studies a number of years ago based on baked beans so have long been in the habit of eating a fair amount of baked beans. My standard baked bean consumption more than covers me for this challenge...

OK then, that gives me a wide range of options that I do like.

I will try some new varieties, ones I don't usually eat, as part of the challenge.

Cord - It sounds a good idea for you to try some new varieties. It is good that we have found some middle ground with some foods that you quite like. I am sure that you will agree that with research results like this - we should all try to have some beans every week. I do eat other beans - but it tends to be a seasonal thing - we have a lot of baked beans every week of the year.

One of the things that I have gotten hooked on in the recent past as a method of adding variety to a salad, is adding black beans to it. It gives a salad some texture and body and a nice little taste accent. In fact, I tend to do a whole southwestern theme by adding avocado as well. Generally speaking I will use the canned variety, for ease of preparation, but I will drain and rinse them in a strainer to get rid of some of the excess sodium.

I am also partial to baked beans and refrieds, so getting my beans in this week should be a non issue.

I am trying yet again to maintain a 100 mile minimum this week on my cycling. little by little it is becoming easier for me to do a 25 mile ride, and then just consider it an "average" distance. I think it is an adaptive mind set. I managed a 1 lbs drop this week. Probably could have been more but the munchies got to me at the mvies and I wiped out a large popcorn, yes with the artificial butter stuff on it too:piggy:

Oh well, i don't go to movies all that often...

I can't afford movie popcorn or drinks - so I usually brought my own chocolate and/or candy in with me.

But I almost never go to the movies anyway, between a small child and a crappy small-town theatre.

I think the last movie I saw in a theatre was "Indiana Jones and the Lame George Lucas Cash-Grab".

I probably go to the cinema less often than anyone - the last time I went was to see Fantasia when the film quality was cleaned up - maybe about a dozen years ago. I should add that we do go to the theatre (to see live acting) more often - maybe a few times a year. Popcorn is no temptation there - but the creamy ice cream is another matter....

Thanks for the beans in salad suggestion. Beans are a really healthy thing for us all to be incorporating into our diets - and the more yummy suggestions that I hear the better. I always have to be vigilent about sodium too - as it can have a terrible effect on my weight...

I found with my walking that we can really push our limits by taking this approach. You have to discard all previous notions about limitations of distance and see what happens if you consider that bit further as the norm...

Congratulations on the pound down. Every pound is a great achievement - think of that as two packets of butter. Dont beat yourself up over the all too human incident regarding the popcorn. We all act like a :piggy: at times.... The fact that you still lost weight demonstrates how hard you worked during the rest of the week.

Just a quick update....

I'm leaving for the airport in about an hour. I have no clue how often I will be able to get to a computer or anything, but I will try to make sure that my scoresheet is filled out in time. If I don't make it, I apologise in advance.

I'm sorry for having been so quiet and not saying much, I will try to be a little more active and supportive for others when I come back. THe last few weeks have just really stressed me out, more than I thought.

Anyway, have a good time everybody and keep losing!! ;)

Have a great holiday. Don't worry about scoresheet deadlines - I am not very good in enforcing them anyway....

I will be posting next week's bonus information either later today or tomorrow. It shouldnt be too onerous - it is my birthday next week so I wont be giving us too hard a time. You should therefore be able to cope with it on holiday if you wish to do so. Kimberly has suggested in my diary that I get everyone to count calories - but - LOL - it certainly wont be next week...

I'm sorry that you have been having such a stressful time. Often stress eases the minute that we set off on holiday. We often feel ourselves leaving our troubles behind. I hope that this happens for you.

I'm sure that your friends and relatives in Germany will be stunned when they see you and see the reality of your wonderful weight loss to date. Even if they have heard about it - it doesnt really prepare people for the reality of seeing people look so different. I know that when I went to Greece last summer I was able to speak to some very close friends and have them not recognise who I was. I hope that you have fun doing this.

On a seperate note - congratulations on becoming a mod for the forum.

Ok well I will admitt, I was just gonna with draw from this challenge since Im not doing anythign or getting anywhere...my life just alittle crazzzy right now. However Im refocused adn giving it another go...so here I am, I drank my water yesturday for the first time in a long time, tha tis a positive start...Im gonna see what I need to do to make a come back...

I have this week off of water areobics so I decided to use this week as a way of re-introducing p90x and tennis...My co-worker is away this week and I was gonna continue going but I figured I could use the break as a time to re-collect and try to rebalance my life a little...

Ok so I think I get everything...

still water, still 5 a day...and we also get half a point if we drink some water...damn so I didnt totally flop last week, lol, plus I exe3rcised...ah well here I am now...

so 5 new fruits or veg through this week and beans 3 cups you said, right but not canned...

hhhmmm that one will be hard...

Wel Im gonna do this, let's see if I can step it up adn come back...

Cerella - canned beans are fine. I get mine in with baked beans. I eat tons of them.

Since beans are vegetables if you have them they count towards your 5-a-day - and if you havent had them on a previous week of the challenge they can count as one of the five new veg for the week.

The only real problem with canned beans is that sometimes they can be high in sodium (as a lot of canned things are) so it may be worth keeping an eye on your sodium total for the day. I buy the baked beans that are labelled low sugar, low sodium and they never cause me a problem (and I am so sodium sensitive it is silly).

Remember to still have your calcium too - as there are more points up for grabs there.

It is great that we didnt lose you.

Well done for refocusing. Also for getting in your water.

I struggled with my water yesterday (and being at goal it is a tiny wimpy little allocation compared to what I used to have). We were out all day going to places like Berwick and Coldstream in the border between England and Scotland. I didnt dare drink much while we were out so had to have it all at night. I was still drinking water an hour after Rod went to bed... I was up for the toilet so many times through the night it was silly!!!

Well it has rained all day today apart from when I was doing the first 5 miles of my walk. Since I am only doing a 6.5 mile walk every morning this was not too bad. The rain didnt get too heavy until after I got home too.

This afternoon I bought a box of apples and a box of peaches at the local fruit and vegetable wholesalers in Newcastle. I wish that I knew where a wholesaler was near where I live that was happy to sell to the general public. I can save a fortune shopping there instead of at Tescos.

Rain here too. Had to trade in my bicycle for a spinning bike. Have not used these all that much, but I kind of enjoyed it. The only issue being that when trapped inside, evaporatiove cooling doesn't work with no airflow. As a result, you could pretty much wring me out afterwards.

The thing is, I was not even at my best effort, if you compare to the level I usually cycle at outdoors. This tells me that I probably always sweat like that, but don't notice it so much normally - another point in favor of the outdoor variety of cycling. H/R was kept around 135-145 for the session, supposedly I did 22 miles, moderate resistance for 45 minutes.

On a good session outdoors I will periodically check my H/R and seem to get close to 150 bpm and have even exceeded that a few times. I really should get an H/R monitor.

Have been doing pretty well getting my pts this week. Just haven't eaten any beans yet..lol I guess I'll be eating a cup a day for the next 3 days..lol

Margaret I know exactly where those places are you mentioned. We were in that area just over a year ago. Whaahh I miss the UK!

Ok sorry i've been mia. My husband was home from being out on the road for 3 days and now i started school on the 20th. So between the kids and school i don't have much time for anything else. however, i am still doing the challenge. Oh ya i totally forgot to update my scoresheet for last week. man having hubby home totally through me off schedule. But so far so good this week. I have gotten in some exercise and lost more weight.. I weighed in at 233.8 on Monday. Hubby and i are working together on our own mini challenge. He wants for me to lose 2 lbs for every 1 lb he loses in the 3 weeks he's out on the road. We are eating 1500 cals a day and doing at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. So i hope it works. I will continue to try to support everyone although i may not be able to stop by here or the diarys every day or week.

I would love to join in on this challenge but I'm not quite sure how everything works. It's been said that a member can join at any time but does that mean I have to start with Week One's challenges? Also, how do I get access to the "scoresheets" and are they simple to use? I know there's probably a newbie post about all this somewhere but I'm having a hard time navigating the site as I'm new...any help would be much appreciated and I'm ready to get started right away!
