Weight-Loss Summer Shake-Up Challenge Chat Thread

Weight-Loss
Karl - well done for having a great day on project. Upping exercise levels really worked well for me and it looks like it is working brilliantly for you too. There is something really satisfying about seeing the distances increase and then the success at the scales too. I'll bet you never thought that it would be possible to feel pretty fresh after a 25 mile ride. Be sure to let us know when you notch those distances up even further.

 for being fresh after 25 miles.

It is great that you are getting in new veggies too. I am loving the new things that I am eating. It is far too easy to get stuck into a rut - and Dawn was right - when we look around the produce department of the big supermarket chains there are plenty of items that I have not even thought of buying.

The thing about fruit and vegetables is that they are so good for us - and it is great to be able to tuck in. Karl - you eat a lot of it normally and already know - but the truth is that if you fill up on it - you naturally cut back on other stuff that would be much more fattening.

Whole diets are built around the notion of GI/GL and what you are basically talking about then is how filling a food is. How satisfying the food is for the amount of calories spent... Basically GI and GL are much the same thing - but GL takes into account portion size. The concept is that if you eat predominantly low GL foods you get full quicker and feel fuller for longer - your calories are naturally limited. The old Weight Watchers "core" diet and Slimming World diet is based on free food lists based on this. The fact is that pretty much all fruit and vegetables are classed as free food in these plans.

Just popping in to see how all my challenge friends are doing.
Looks like things are going well.
Keep up the Great Work Margaret!

Naturally we are all missing you Dawn - in fact I was just talking about you earlier...

A dicky bird told me that you are down 3 pounds - well done!

Thanks Margaret!
I think it is mostly due in part to the medicine that the doctor has put me on. But at this point I will take any downward motion I can get. hahaha
The last 3 days is the best I have felt in a very long time. In fact for the first time in I don't know how long I actually woke up before anyone else in the house!
It was getting so bad that I would sleep most of the morning away.
I am glad that I finally took the step to talk to my doctor.

*And if you ever want more ideas on fruits and veggies you know I am your girl! I never realized how many there were until I worked at the DC.*

Dawn - Medicine or whatever - it is great that you have found something that is moving things in the right direction for you. You deserve to have the joy of seeing that.

It is wonderful that you are feeling better.

You cheered me up only a little while ago with a great story you posted in facebook. Thanks.

I am not surprised at you wanting to sleep - you work such unusual hours. I would be taking to my bed if I worked some of the hours that you work...

For an off-the-cuff idea the new fruit and veg thing seems set to run and run. I am sampling more stuff every week - this week I had something called physalis that I hadnt even heard of...

(((everyone else shudders at what I will be having them eat and do in week 9)))

Thanks Margaret!
I am hoping to be at least down 10 pound by the time MIL comes for a visit. And at this rate I should be.

As for the fruit.......I never knew there were so many different kinds and varities.
Now I eat more and more simply 'cuz I see them and smell them all day long!

Make sure that you pop into this thread and tell us how you are progressing in your personal "Weight Loss Before MIL Visit" Challenge. We'll cheer you on from the side-lines the same way that you are cheering us on. I know that you can do it Dawn...

The fantastic thing about eating fruit is that it is so good for you. It kind of soothes your conscience while you stuff your face LOL.

I was just saying earlier today that the WW core and SW free food lists are full of fruit and veg.

The fact that they are often sweet and look and smell good is a bonus.

Hey all. i'm not going to be as active for a few days. my husband is home till monday. so i'll be working on losing weight and eating good at the same time. Hopefully with him home i can get some exercise in too. lol

Heather - we all have times when we dont get into the forum so much. Rod will be off work - and we will be away from home for a week so I may not be about as much as normal. Husbands do have the idea that we should spend time with them if they are about. Check out the bonus announcement (in both this thread and the scoresheet thread) so that you know what we are all working on - basically beans, calcium, water, 5-a-day, new fruit and veg, dip recipe and exercise..... LOL - I like to keep everyone busy!!! Realistically though - I wouldnt be at all surprised if I drop a few points myself tomorrow as I rarely manage to do my water on the days when we travel...

Any exercise is good exercise - and the more energetic the better!!!

I've been doing horrible the last few days. I haven't exercised. Didn't go swimming this week. The last three days I haven't so much as looked at my eliptical trainer. Thursday I lived entirely of junk food. I didn't go over my calories, but all I ate were 2 chocolate muffins, a pot of ice cream from KFC (the only thing I would eat from KFC) and a Mars Ice cream bar. I had 1 glass of water, the rest was coffee and diet coke.

Today was better, but still no proper dinner. Just sandwiches, yogurt and fruit. I just don't feel like eating at all.

I'm pretty stressed out about going to Germany next Tuesday. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong so far (passport problems, flight booked in the wrong name, parking booking for my car didn't go through twice, my stepson's summer school messed up our booking, my best friend who wanted to see me had emergency surgery a few days back etc), my husband is barely talking to me because I'm 'abandoning' him for a week, and I tend to go from being hyperactive to sitting in a corner bawling my eyes out. I hate things like this, I really do :(

Sorry for the rant. Hope everybody else is doing well!

Sorry you're feeling down. Must be something in the air - I've also been in the dumps lately and am only now coming out of it.

It's pretty hard to stay in your calorie limit when eating only junk food, isn't it? :)
If you get some actual nutrition in there, you go over limit. Stay in your limit, and there's not much actual food in there.

Sandwiches as dinner sounds fine to me, as long as they are made with good ingredients. Stuff 'em with lean protein and lots of veggies and you're good to go. Eat good food and it doesn't matter what form it is in.

The thing that helped me shake off the blues was going and working out hard. It made me feel genuinely better. Ditto for making sure I ate good food. But these are the first two things to go when I am feeling depressed. I stop working out and start eating crap. It is hard sometimes to get back into it.

Hope you are feeling better soon. Take care.

San - I am so sorry to hear that life has got to be so stressful for you. You have had a particularly difficult time recently....

Your body needs nourishment in order to be able to function properly. If you put the wrong grade of fuel (or worse still watered down fuel) into a car - you would never expect it to run properly.

Similarly your body will function much better if you give it the right fuel...

Consider it to be like taking medicine for a while - eat nourishing food - even when you do not even fancy the idea of it. If your body is performing well you will be better able to cope with the problems that life sometimes throws at us....

Attempts to lose weight can take a back seat for a few days. After all - you spent a long time eating unhealthily before you started your project - a few days of not striving to lose weight is not the end of the world. It need only delay you reaching goal weight by a few days.

Sandwiches, yoghurt and fruit may not have been as bad a food choice as you imply. The fruit would give you some fibre, healthy carbs, vitamins / nutrients and the yoghurt would give some protein and calcium. Depending on what was in the sandwiches and quantities you may have hit some of your nutritional targets... :)

Try keying it into fitday - it may surprise you :)

It is a shame that your husband is not supporting you regarding your forthcoming holiday. You do deserve to see friends and family every so often. You do after all devote a great deal of effort in helping his son and his mother. The fact is that he probably misses you already (a strange concept but a feeling that I always get when I know that I am soon going to not see someone that I care about) plus he is probably worried as to how he is ever going to cope without you...

Try to focus on the positives in your forthcoming trip. The people that you will see and the things that you will get a chance to do. All too soon it will be in the past - and you will be back to everyday life.

Good point Cord! Exercise and good food can really help turn things around.

Exercise IS really good for depression. It is a proven fact that exercise can be more beneficial for depression than prescription drugs. It releases endorphins that make you feel happy and clear your head. If I'm feeling down and then go exercise, I feel tons better afterwards. So San, tell your dh to give you a break and then go work out. Sorry you're going through a rough time atm. I hope your trip is loads better than the time leading up to it. :)

Well Margaret, you'll be pleased to know that I'm all updated on my scoresheet. :svengo:

Updated my scoresheet for the end of week 3.

Week 4 is going to be a killer though - I despise almost all beans.

There are a few varieties I can eat, though, so I'll do what I can.

Wow - I am impressed that people have updated their scoresheet early. Thanks!

Cord - I am sorry that beans are going to be hard for you. Maybe you can find a variety that you like better than others. They are so darned good for you! I remember Rod's skinny brother being impressed that Rod (currently is 362 pounds and has long been cuddly) had lower cholesterol than he had. This was a number of years ago and while we were both very big people I had read a similar study about beans and been making sure that we had our bean quota every week for a couple of months. I try to make sure that we both have beans quite regularly as I do not want Rod to die of a heart attack like his father did at age 47 due to morbid obesity.

Hey guys I'm really sorry to do this but I'm gonna have to pull out of the challenge :(
I'm gonna be really busy for the next few months and might not be able to check in very often plus I'm going away a few more times so its gonna be really hard to keep updating.
I wish you all the best of luck and will still pop in every once in a while to see how everyones doing and try to do the weekly challenges. I just won't be logging anything.
Good Luck! :) And sorry again!

Kirsty - Sorry to lose you. Good luck with your project while you are away from us - and we would still love to hear about your successes.

Sorry I havent got round to sorting out the scores yet... I spent much of Saturday travelling and am now away from home for the next week or so with more limited computer access time.

I have to go out walking soon - but will get up to date in a few hours.
