Weight-Loss Summer Shake-Up Challenge Chat Thread

Weight-Loss
You're right, I hadn't thought about all the points I'd be missing out on for friday. I guess I'll have to make sure I get them in. It should be easier now that I am only working one job lol.

Let me know when you have updated your scoresheet and I will update the points for last week.

Well I had the calcium taken care of by the end of breakfast, so the ice cream was just extra..lol :blush5:

Never mind - we all have our moments. I have just eaten some chocolate. LOL (We were tidying up and I found some.... - I really should learn never to tidy up!!!!)

Congratulate yourself on taking care of the calcium so early in the day.

Ok just got home early this am. it was like 12:30am when we got to bed. My boys and I and my mom and sis went to disneyland for the day yesterday. So my food intake wasn't that great but i did get in plenty of water for the day as well as plenty of exercise. My pedometer thing said we walked like 10 miles for the time we were there. It was fun but challenging cause we had Alex my 5 yr old who's in a wheelchair and people are just plain ass rude and don't care that your child is handicapped to watch where the hell they are walking/running too. Then i also had my 8 month old with us. So one of us was always either pushing/holding the baby or alex and i was suprised we didn't have more trouble. I got my fruits in but no veggies for the day so i was kinda disappointed. Oh yeah i am still not sure on how the points stuff works. I have done the water challenge everyday this week and the fruits/veggies 4 days outta 7 the week before. but didn't get a chance to post my scores cause i'm lost.. lol But calicum shouldn't be an issue as i have already had milk with my cereal this am and a glass all by its self.. haha i love milk plus if it is in yogurt and stuff then i should be good. i'm just not sure how much is actually in my yogurts as it says it in a percentage not an mg amount.

Heather--There are two ways you can calculate your calcium. The US RDA for calcium is the same as Margaret's bonus. So you can add up your percentages until you get 100, or you can add a zero to the end of each percentage on the labels for the amount in mg. For example, 1 cup of milk has 30% of the RDA of calcium--or 300mg.

That's a lot of walking, btw. Why is your son in a wheelchair? I didn't know that.

Thanx BB:)!!!

Dont worry about not having had a chance to post last week's results. I try to be flexible and know that your life was in a bit of a turmoil last week with having to be away...

If you fill in the scoresheet and let me know I will sort out the points for you.

The first thing that you enter is the amount of hours of exercise...

Then after that there is a string of different days of the week. That covers the main thing which was water drinking last week. If you drank your full allocation every day that would be WWWWWWW - i.e. a "W" (for water) for every day that week. Some people have an allocation that they find difficult to manage - if they have at least 3 litres of water they show 3 instead of W on those days...

Then the next string is for 5-a-day. It is great that you got your fruits last week. If you had 5 servings (either fruit or veg so they can all be fruit) in the day put V for that day.

Basically - if you had any kinds of fruit or vegetables in week 2 that you didnt have in week 1 - list them at the bottom of the scoresheet and I will work out the points for that too.

It is a good idea to list all the different kinds of fruit or veg that you had in week 1 so that you remember them.

Check some of the other scoresheets for examples.

=====

I am also sorry to hear that Alex is in a wheelchair. I hadnt realised that he was disabled. That situation must bring a lot of stress for you all.

My brother in law is disabled - and you are right - people can be inconsiderate - which can make a difficult situation worse...

finally back

Hi guys,

sorry I disappeared for awhile, first my computer died on me, then I went on a surprise trip (dont you just love being kidnapped by friends?). Anyways, back and trying to get on track again. I've been back while away, kind of feeling guilty...

Hi guys,

sorry I disappeared for awhile, first my computer died on me, then I went on a surprise trip (dont you just love being kidnapped by friends?). Anyways, back and trying to get on track again. I've been back while away, kind of feeling guilty...

It is good to see you back.

Never any need to feel guilty among friends. We are all fighting much the same gang of demons - and know how life can get in the way of us doing what we need to do to get our weight under control and where we want to be. Stress is always hard - and your computer dying is certainly stressful. Surprise trips can be enjoyable - but can play havoc with lifestyle changes...

First things first - do you think that you are back on track now? If not is there any way that we can help you?

As far as the challenge goes - I am not as strict as many - so if you fill in your scoresheet and let me know - I will sort out what points you earned last week.

Brief recap - until Friday we were drinking water (either to allocation reported as "W" or to 3 litres if allocation seemed too much - reported as "3" for less points). Also getting 5-a-day reported as "V". In addition we were aiming to try new fruit and veg not had during week 1 (at least three of which had to be veg).

Since Saturday we have been concentrating on having sufficient calcium reported as "C". Also all of the above - but removing the need for the new fruit or veg to have a minimum veg element.

Naturally I need to know about exercise too.

It is all written out more formally in both threads.

Well, so much for the holiday...

While I was off south, I climbed a couple of mountains - for the first one I went to the first two peaks, one 550m ascent and the other 600m ascent (although you only go partway down again before heading back up), and about 5km total horizontal distance up and down. For those familiar with British Columbia, I climbed the Stawamus Chief. Up and down took about 3.5 hours.

The second climb was the Grouse Grind, popularly known as "nature's stairmaster". The trail is 2.9km long, and pretty much straight up - the vertical ascent is 853m. My time was 1hour 18min, which is apparently quite remarkable for a first-timer, not to mention someone my size. Average time for the grind is 1.5 hours.

On the day in between these two climbs I walked the Stanley Park Seawall, about 8km. You know, as a 'cool-down' day. :)

Immediately after the Grind I drove home (normally 6 hours, but took 9 due to car trouble. The next day we went off camping with friends. On the second day we went for an hour's easy hike, and I also spent about an hour kayaking around the lake we were at.

So, as holidays go, I think I kept pretty active.

The bad part was that I also ate immoderately and without restraint. And it showed on the scale this morning.

During my holiday I gained 4 pounds. I feel awful.

However, if there is a lesson to be learned here, it is that the lifestyle I have been following up until then was working. As long as I watched my food intake, made good choices, and got regular exercise, I was going the right way. Fall off the programme, and it all goes to hell.

I feel simultaneously triumphant at all the stuff I was able to accomplish, and crushed because of the concomitant weight gain.

Cord - you are right to feel triumphant. Many many fit slim people are not nearly as active as you were on holiday. I'll bet the you of last year would not have dreamt of accomplishing a tenth of what you accomplished during a holiday.

These are lifestyle changes that we are doing - not just a diet... People think of diets as being something temporary - predominantly solely to do with food - that people do before getting back to business as usual...

I'll bet that people who have always been skinny give themselves a bit of slack on holiday. The difference is that they generally do not hop on the scales the minute that they get back and give themselves a hard time about it.

The thing is that we do hop on the scales because it is part of what we do. We know that we have to do this because we have learnt the life lesson that says that we are the kind of people that are inclined to put on weight given half a chance....

The thing is that those 4 pounds are what I call splurge pounds. I remember telling loads of people about them the Christmas before last. The thing is that they are not worth beating yourself up over. The thing with splurge pounds is that they disappear within a few days when you get back on track.

I think that to put on 4 pounds of fat you would need to eat something like 14,000 calories over and above what you burnt over that period. The fact is that with all that exercise you are not likely to have been in excess to anything like that level. You would have to have really eaten a lot of fattening stuff to do that.

You probably ate things that were not nearly as restricted as normal - and you may well have gone into the territory of food much higher in sodium than you are used to. Sodium causes water retention and it is very easy to gain 4 pounds when water retention kicks in...

Many ladies have a gain of that order every month due to the water retention that comes as part of the monthly cycle. If I have salt my weight shoots up. I gained 8.5 pounds in three days of not eating when I was rushed into hospital and needed to have an emergency operation. They put me on a saline drip so I knew that my weight would gain like nothing else!!!!

I always feel silly for having abandoned diet after diet over a twenty year period when I counted calories at rediculously low levels, eventually went over the total that I was trying to keep under, binged because I felt bad, and then felt even worse when I saw the gain at the scales. The stupid thing is that I was so big I would have been in deficit at the "high calorie" level and even the gain due to the binge would have disappeared in a few days. I really hope that you and Othie don't make my mistakes. Let me be the only stupid person round here!

Cord, phenomenal job being extremely active! You are an athlete who is temporarily stuck inside an XL body is all. That is changing quickly!

I finally got some sun and have tried my best to make use of the nice weather. Thursday last week was an 18 + mile ride, Friday went for 27 miles round trip on the coast near me. Saturday I did 21.5 and today I did 21.5 (same route). That gives me a 6 day total of 88 miles. Since I intend to do another ride tommorrow, barring mechanical gremlins or other problems, I should have in excess of 100 miles in a week's time.

Karl - of course you are another athlete temporarily inside a large body...

That is an extremely good point. I probably ate my own weight in salt over the last week.
Don't worry - the self-recriminating process is something I have to go through. It won't throw me off track or make me give up or anything. I'm back on track and we will see what happens over the next few days.

Funny, that is exactly what I have decided over the last week. I am an athlete, or at least an athlete-to-be, trying to break out of an oversized body.
I'm trying to push my physical boundaries, and am already in better shape than I have ever been in, in my entire life.

And speaking of XL, I did have a couple of nice experiences on my trip. I visited a couple of women who are very close friends of mine, and they both independently thought that not only am I looking a whole lot better, but that I should go down another shirt size. I'm currently wearing 2XL shirts, and even I have to admit that the 3XL shirts now look ridiculously huge. So I may try on some XL shirts and see how they fit.
The annoying this is that I just bought a bunch of new 2XL shirts...

Then the best thing that you can do is make sure that you drink your full allocation of water - irrespective of any desire for challenge points.

Oh - if everyone on the forum could be troubled by such annoyances... Quite a few of us that found that we were regularly changing sizes came to swear by clothing from charity shops and supermarkets. It is worth seeking out the clothing bargains - because it can often be the case that you are only in the new size for a very short time.

It is funny how a trimmer body can look fantastic in such cheap clothes. When I was at my biggest I used to pay a fortune for my clothes. I guess that I was hoping that I would find something to camouflage my enormous bulges. Then I spent months wearing clothes that was far too big for me. I didnt want to spend money on something that I was hoping to get just a few weeks' wear out of. Once I discovered the really cheap clothing available I was hooked. I would have a new outfit for the price of a magazine - and feel even better about my new shape. You have to remember that I was pretty big by anyone's standards - and have gone down from a UK size 32 to a UK size 10 during my project which is an awful lot of changes in clothes size and could potentially cost an absolute fortune!!!!

Well, the big thing here for me is this. The last 2 weekends I have had BBQ's that threatened to derail my pland somewhat regarding consumptions. Luckily, I have also built in some intentional calorie banking. I'm down 2 lbs to 311. It did not happen as quickly as I would have liked, but it did happen. This weekend is business as usual, and with any luck, there will be no excesses, so perhaps I will be back on track all around.

Calorie banking is a great way to cope both mentally (with the guilt) and project wise (avoiding gains) from a testing day when we know that we will eat differently than normal and therefore exceed what we may think of as our happy range of calories. My happy range tends to always end up in the 1400 to 1700 range of calories for the day. I dont count calories all the time - but I do eat what has long proven to be one of the more repetitive diets on the forum. If I count my food one week and that is where I am - if I eat the same food the next week I should end up pretty much the same place...

I love the calorie balance report on fitday - because I love seeing my exercise exceed my food and give me those calories sitting in the bank...

Karl - well done for getting the 2 pounds weight loss despite the barbeques. 2 pounds is a whole lot of weight. My Slimming World leader has a rubber model that looks exactly what 2 pounds of fat looks like - and believe me - it is really ugly and huge. So much more ugly and huge than we would tend to imagine... She is always getting it out to show people what their losses look like. I have also known people buy 2 pounds of animal fat from the butchers and have it sealed in a clear thick plastic bag in order to provide motivation. Prior to me joining SW I used to always think of bricks of butter - our butter comes in half pound packs so that is 4 packs of butter...

While you are getting back to business as usual - it looks like we will be going away to Newcastle this weekend. I fully expect to be dropping points then - as things are always more difficult when away from home....

This new fruit and vegetable bonus is working so well for me! I was in Tescos today and I saw some little berries called physalis that I had never heard of never mind eaten before. 20 berries are apparently one of 5-a-day. They are yellowy orange berries which come inside closed flower petals.

Well they were selling 100g bags containing just over 20 berries so I bought one and have just eaten them - 48 calories. They are not my favourite berry - but I would happily have them again.

A new culinary experience!!!

There was a rather enticing recipe on the back whereby you dip them in chocolate - but I had them plain. Maybe in another lifetime in a naturally slender body! There are enough chocolate treats that I have had before to tempt me.

Ya i have never heard of those berries but they sound interesting. Anyways.. i have updated my scoresheet. instead of posting a new one i just edited my first scoresheet post. i hope i did it correctly. Let me know if i need to change anything.

Sounds good Heather - yes we edit the original scoresheet each time - altering whichever week we are doing. I will go and add things up for your week 2 now. I have now done that. When you consider that you were away and had a fair bit of stress - you had a brilliant week Heather. Many of us would not do nearly so well. Feel proud of yourself for that.
