Weight-Loss Summer Shake-Up Challenge Chat Thread

Weight-Loss
Hey Margaret thanx for your kind words, I forget how supportive you are:hug2::):hug2:I feel bad Ive been so busy Ive had no time for support...not even myself,LOL

As for Bal he is actually working on loosing weight as well...He is 6'4 and weights 250, He was 300 so he is into diet pop and sweetener for coffee etc etce etc...so it is nice that he is health conscious...to a point...I toldhim Im not really for eating out lots because youhave no control over the prep off the food ya know, sodium and etc...

Thanks for the compliment. :hug2:

It is great that Bal is working on losing weight - it means that he can understand things that are important to us like exercise and being sure about how food is cooked. Romantic meals out together can be nice - but romantic meals in can be even nicer!!!

He knows that we can redesign our bodies (and can need to do so for ourselves) - but that we need to work hard to do so.

You make a very valid point - even some diet aware restaurants and well meaning friends who cook for us may think of calorie content and try to aim for low fat options - but very few seem to consider the sodium side of things. So many of us just eat and watch our weight go through the roof over the next few days... The amount of times that I have struggled to drink over and above my water allocation to try to bring it down faster!!!!!

If we prepare our own food we can be sure of the full nutritional picture.

Hmm....I had a look at FitDay, and kind of figured out how much Calcium is in my yogurt. So that's a plus. On the minus side, I'm not really impressed with the page as such, so I guess I'll just use the nutrition part of it whenever the food label fails to provide enough info.

In other news....there is no news. It's raining, and it's supposed to keep raining the whole next week. And I am getting antsy about my trip to Germany - so much to do, so little time.....*lol*

San - I know what you mean about the nutrition page of fitday - it is very busy. That is why I set things up as a goal because that page is much easier on the eye.

If calculating by hand - remember that there are things like fish and baked beans that have calcium - it isnt just dairy.....

Hi, everyone, I'm back - briefly.

Just got back from my odyssey of bad food and physical insanity, have 5 minutes to post here and then have to frantically pack to take my family camping for the weekend.

On my trip the water was no problem but I didn't get my 5 a day in every day, so I guess I'm pretty much out of the running. Going camping now will make me fall even further behind.

Going to be impossible for me to get that much calcium without supplements - I don't consume a lot of dairy.

On my trip I climbed a few mountains (well, just 2, but one of them twice), and did some decent walking too.
After I get back from the camping weekend I will tell you all about it.

Hope everyone had a better food week than I did.

Oh, and I updated my score sheet up to Thursday, but won't be able to update for Friday until Sunday night, when I get back from the camping trip.

I am so pleased that I set the calcium challenge then because you are exactly the person that needs to be alerted to this research. It would be such a shame for your weight loss to be hindered (or maintenance made harder for you) for the sake of either rearranging your food plan or taking a supplement (depending on which school of thinking ends up being right).

At least if you are aware of it - it is down to you as to whether you follow it or not.

Well done for drinking your water and all that exercise. Focus on the points that you got and not those that you dropped.

As far as the dropped points for 5-a-day goes - as I said to Cerella - I suspect that everyone will be dropping points before the end. I believe in dishing out points for a lot of different things and some astronomic point totals will be possible. I suspect that a lot of people will feel quite stretched - but that can be a good feeling too.

Accomplishing something that is easy does not give anyone the same feeling of satisfaction as you get when you know that you were really stretched. It is even better if we learn something along the way.

I must admit that I am getting something quite valuable out of the extraveg element of the challenge. It is an area where I know that I am being pushed outside of my comfort zone. Anyone that read my long abandoned diary knows that I have long eaten according to probably the most repetitive food plan on the forum. I really only ever vary my main meal - and that is one of no more than 10 options. Each one set in stone - with exactly the same veg etc.

It is also great that I am having company along the way for the checks that I have to be making at this time - which is a very crucial time for me as I mess things about for maintenance.

I am trying to be a little less strict with my food than I was - which needed to be done. We cannot eat as it we are trying to reduce for ever....

I am ever watchful as to whether I need to alter my walking distances too. On the whole I have stuck to the reduced level of 6.5 miles of exercise walking a day (never less) - but there have been days when I have done that and popped out to do an extra few miles.... I know that I shouldnt - but it is hard when you see your weight increase from goal and you really want it back there.... Quite stupid really when you continue to weigh every day (as you have done for years) and know just about all that there is to know about the reality of day to day fluctuations....

Had an amazing day! The sun was bright, the temperature was warm, but not crazy hot. Perfect for riding.

Took the day off and went to the beach with my wife. I brought my bicycle and rode it up the coast, Beautiful riding. Lots of amazing ocean views. Had a terrific ride. I got a round trip of 27 miles, held an average speed of 16 mph. 1 hour and 41 minutes.

Karl - The world is so much nicer when we get good weather. I am so pleased that you were able to take advantage of some lovely weather with that bike ride. That is absolutely great exercise nestled inside a really nice day for you.

I was just chatting of this whole notion the other day with Cerella when I was saying that we can spend really nice times with those that we love AND get the exercise done that we *know* that we need to do for our project to succeed.

It sounds to me like the bike ride enhanced your enjoyment of the day Karl because you were able to have that glowy warm feeling that despite the day's pleasures - your project was fully on track for success with the day's efforts too.

Well done!

I have started to have an eye on the Calcium content of the things I eat, and I have to admit that I'm surprised. I take a Calcium supplement every day, but looking at what my food contained so far (and it's only 4 pm), I wouldn't need to take it at all. Is there a side effect on taking too much Calcium in, or will the body just take what it needs and pass the rest through?

Oh, one question, I got some melon the other day, and noticed that there are 5 different types of melon in the supermarket, sometimes more. Will the different types count towards the newveg thing when eaten, or is it just 'melon' regardless of the particular type? I'm happy either way, just want to make sure I count it right.

And I got myself an avocado today, because people keep saying that avocados are good. Now it's sitting in my fridge, and I don't have the foggiest clue what to do with it....any suggestions? *lol*

Cabbie, sounds like you're having a great time and getting some exercise in at the same time, lucky you!! :) :) :) Glad you're enjoying yourself!!!

San - it is great that you are covering off your calcium needs through nutrition alone. I believe that nutrition is the best way of getting most of our vitamins and minerals if we can manage it. I would certainly rather eat a wide range of yummy food than take a few pills (most of us here have a track record of liking our food too!) Also - there are schools of thought that say that we get better benefits from the calcium coming in dairy form (as you would see from the links). It appears to be that you have a greater fat element to your excrement.....

I am no expert but do not believe that there is any real harm in having too much calcium - having said that - I took a calcium supplement for a while and stopped when I started having 4 yoghurts a day and saw that I no longer needed it. I am sure that such as Kimberly who tells us that she has been taking it since she became pregnant would have been warned as to how she would need to restrict it in her diet at that time if it was potentially harmful...

I ruled last week that different major varieties were fine to be counted as different fruit and vegetables so the different types of melon are fine. It is an opportunity for us to expand our eating horizons and see what we like and do not like of the stuff that doesnt automatically come home with us from the shops.

I see that Tescos have some great deals on melons at the minute and will probably try a few different types myself. As far as I am concerned honeydew, cantaloupe and galia etc all count as different. Also remember - I am removing the restriction that says so many have to be vegetables.

Nature provides a wide range of foods which can fill us up and provide us with sweetness in our diet at very competitive prices in calories... I am loving eating different things....

It is wonderful to get inspiration when we see what each other are listing as things that they have eaten...

Today I ate a whole mango for the first time ever. I have had things mango flavoured and have eaten prepared fruit salads that contained mango - but never taken a whole fruit and eaten it "as is". I was quite surprised when I saw how long and flat the stone is!!!

I have no idea about avacado as I have never bought one either!!! Maybe someone else can help - or maybe you can find something on the internet.

I've been to Tesco's, that's where I saw the melons....*lol*

So I guess I'm going to eat my way through the different types, amongst other things. Today I'm just not hungry at all....and it's my cheat day. I have one 'Eat what you want, when you want it' day per week, where I don't restrict myself at all, but I have noticed that I am eating less and less on those days. At first I would have chocolate, cake, real coke, junk food, anything you can imagine, but nowadays I'm usually eating just my normal things, and add a treat like an extra portion of something I particulary like, or some ice cream or something. I usually have 1500 calories per day (well, usually more like 1200, but it SHOULD be 1500), and on my cheat day I barely go up to 2000, which is still way under maintenance. Which works nicely for me....*lol*

Well done for eating way under maintenance on cheat days. That is brilliant.

We have started to cook our roast dinner on a Saturday - so that is cooking at the minute. We simply have a mountain of veg with it. I eat fruit pretty much all afternoon - then have a meal with a mountain of veg. After that I dont really get hungry until I finish on the treadmill the next day...

Tomorrow may be a slightly less restricted day with food.... We shall see... It will be our wedding anniversary and people often treat themselves a little on such occasions. It is my intention to be good - but you never know....

Hi all! I haven't had a lot of time the past few week for writing on here. Just popped in when I could to update. I hope everyone is doing well. I've been doing great on my water.. except for one really busy day. The day was gone before I knew it and I only had 3 glasses =/. Veggies and fruit are easy to get in enough on the week days. It's harder for me to stay in control on the weekend. All the running around that has to be done, Its just so hectic, but I am trying.

Also wanted to ask if it would be ok if I put in what I did this past friday for next friday. I wont be able to update on time and this way i'll get credit without making you update just for me. So I'd put in last fridays info for this friday.... this fridays info would go into the next fridays slot and so on.

Margaret--I rarely eat whole mangos, but did the other day as they were on sale..lol. It is funny how long and flat the pit is..I thought the exact same thing! :)

San--avocados are great in salads or on sandwiches. You can spread it on toast or biscuits, too. You can also make quacamole out of it and use it as a dip.

Had a great walk this evening. Went to the local library and back which is a little over 3 miles roundtrip. Did it in an hour and was sweating like crazy. Normally (before getting preggers) I could do 3 miles in 45 min, but this route has a lot of uphill climbs, and pushing a baby in a stroller makes it harder as well. Anyway, it felt good to get such good exercise. Now if only I hadn't finished off the triple peanut butter cup ice cream in the freezer when I got home. :ack2: If only I hadn't bought it in the first place. :angelsad2: Oh, well, I ate pretty well the rest of the day and definitely got in my calcium...lol.

Since it is an accumulation and all the tasks for each week are a subset of those for the following week - that would be ok by me. It does however raise the concept that you would get absolutely no credit for all the hard work that you do on the very last Friday of the challenge. Think about it as there will be a lot of points up for grabs that day and you will have acquired (or reinforced) a lot of great habits. Therefore are really likely to work hard that day whether you are thinking about the challenge or not. So much of what we do is down to habit...

Let me know what you decide in this thread.

Hi, I'm back.

Will update my week 2 score in a moment.

Welcome back. I have updated your score.

You are doing really well - in fact for someone who has been away you are doing astoundingly well. We will all be dropping a few points before the end and you are getting great weight loss (we've seen the pictures!!!)

Well done on getting the walk in. I am sure that May would love it too. The great thing is that it is both cardio and ST (pushing the stroller has to help some muscles!!!) and on top of that a great opportunity to show everyone what a beautiful baby you have....

As far as the ice cream goes - LOL - that isnt exactly what I envisaged for you if ensuring that you had your calcium from nutritional sources.... :biggrinjester:

You're right, I hadn't thought about all the points I'd be missing out on for friday. I guess I'll have to make sure I get them in. It should be easier now that I am only working one job lol.
