Runner's Club

5 miles

I did it! I just ran five miles. I'm so happy. I've been changing up my cardio. One day I'll go slow on the treadmill with a 10 degree incline, then I'll go mountain biking and then I'll run on the road. Well, the last time I ran on the road I did 3.7 miles. Today I though I'd do 4, but when I got to four miles I felt like I could keep going. I did another mile, and I still felt like I could keep going, but decided to stop because I was starting to feel a little twinge in my ankle. My time is slow, 54 min. 36 sec., but I did it without stopping. This was a big goal for me.

:hurray:

awesome job Trops!

Hi all!

I guess I have graduated to being a real runner now! :)

I started with the Couch-5K program in January, and yesterday (May 3), I ran competitively in my very first 5K! I finished in 32:00, which was a HUGE accomplishment! I know it's not the fastest time, but it was MY fastest time ever! I went from not being able to run 5 minutes to running in a 5K! Yes! I can't wait for the next one!

Way to go! I know that I'd be happy with that time. I haven't done my first 5k yet, but I think I'm ready to give it a try.

Do it!!!!

Bossy, I know, but it was an unbelievable experience!!! The one I did was to raise money for breast cancer, so it was also a worthy cause!

You should check out my diary and read the post I just wrote all about it - it was such a wonderful experience!

:)

Trops, thanks for taking the time to stop by my diary and comment.

It really was the best feeling in the world to cross that finish line! I know you can do it, and I know you will love it! I am already searching for my next one! :)

How have I been a member of this forum this long and finally tonight I decided to look for a thread for runners???

Guess I've found another way to waste time on the computer...guess I need something to do while recovering from races right?

Finished my 5k road race yesterday in Downtown buffalo in 24:40, my fastest yet...not bad for this 210lbs boy right?

Hello Everyone :)

I'd like to join you guys!! I am just starting to run so I have a long way to go, but I think it would be cool to be a part of this club :D I have always loved running but have never really given it my all. I remember years ago in middle school we had to do a mile run which was equal to nine laps around our track. Well the P.E. teacher did not prepare us for it or tell us it was a requirement. We just came to P.E. and it was time to run. I was a little fat in those days. I thought it was really cool because we had alot of the school football and basketball players in our class of like 50 kids. They started me in the middle and I came in first in the first lap :D When I was coming around I heard this guy say "Dam that fat girl is beating everyone" it bothered me a bit so I started walking immediately. For the remaining 8 laps, I did some jogging and some walking but came in second to last. I do not remember every detail of why I did this, but I do know I did not give it my all. Looking back that guys comment should have inspired me to continue my lead and not stop. LOL

Well I am starting today. I was totally inspired by Tyly's (Daiseeangel) 5K journey. I realized that with effort, dedication and practice I can really do this. I put the dream to run waaay in the back of my mind and chalked it off as being impossible, but now I totally believe I can do this and I know that this will give me a long term dedication to my fitness goals. I have a lot of weight to lose, but I still believe in myself and am starting this (with moderation) today. So here I go....

Oh my goodness, there is no greater compliment than that!!!! Thank you!!!

Getting started is tough, but trust me, the pride you will feel for yourself makes it all worth it! There were plenty of days that I just wanted to sit around on the couch, but the feeling I got from finishing my very first one was totally worth all the sweat and hard work!!!

I know you can do it!

Good luck Pink! let us know how the first run of your new journey goes today! Me, I'm going out to the park to run. I was going to go to the gym and lift, but the sun's shining and it's too nice to be inside. I ran 7 miles at the gym yesterday and need to get back to the park...

Headphones

OK, all you serious runners, what headphones do you use for running. I've been getting my times up, but I really want to eventually do longer distances and longer times. Yesterday I was running for just about an hour and by the end my ear buds were killing me. I'd like to use sound deafening headphones, but the ones that I have are these big clunker headphones.

What do you consider to be the best for running long distance?

Can I join in? :)

I used to be a dedicated runner doing about 6 miles/day 4 or 5 times a week. I have never felt better in my life. However I allowed school to get in the way
and started slacking which eventually lead to justifying reasons not to. But now summer is here and I have nothing but time! I want my main mode of weight loss to be running mixed with a healthy diet because it has worked for me in the past. My mind and body are definitely those of a runner. I just did 4 miles on the treadmill and my body is loving me right now. A few summers ago I lost 15 pounds running (and I've kept most of that weight off!) so I'd like to repeat that and maybe lose a few more.

Here's to running!

Jane

Hey everyone!! I did 8 miles this morning and I am feeling great!!! I am loving the that its not longer dark at 6am!!!! I might be able to attempt my half-marathon after summer!

Welcome Jane!!!:hurray: 6 miles is awesome...you can do it again! I am a new runner myself so I am working towards smaller goals for now. Inevitably they all lead to bigger goals though :)

Trops I was wondering the same thing. I want to get some headphones and some device to play music...not sure if i should get a thin mp3 player or an ipod. Does anyone else use headphones when running? If so, what do you use?

 8 miles Rimay??? That roxxxx

I have not tried a 5k race yet, but I am planning on doing it this summer at some point. There is one in two weeks, and it's for a really good cause, but I'm working and I've been taking a lot of time off recently, so I'll probably skip it.

My thing is, I was talking to someone who does a lot of 5k, 10k, and now marathons. She was telling me that the male 40-45 year category is the most competitive. Now, I'm really just going to do it for the experience and the fun, but I don't want to embarrass myself. My mother said that she'd do it with me, but she wanted to know what kind of times I'm doing now. When i told her she said that was good because that's what she's doing. Great, now I'll be running with a 64 year old woman.

I have to get my times down. I tried something today to try to get my speed up. I ran my usual pace (about 10 minute miles) for 90 sec, then kicked it up for 30 sec. I got the pace up and did about 1.75 miles and then I was too pooped. I stopped. I was disappointed with myself, so about two hours later I tried seeing how fast I could do one mile. I did it in 8 min. 35 sec. I thought that was pretty good for me. Now I want to increase that distance and keep up that pace.

Thanks for letting me ramble on. Any suggestions for getting up my speed will be appreciated.

Thanks

Not a race, but I just ran 5k and my time was 27 minutes 57 sec. That's a PB for me and it's an average of 9 minute miles. I was faster the first mile, and slower the last, but it still averages out. It's a full minute/mile faster then what I was doing. If I can get another minute off my time I'll be very happy.

Reached another milestone today. Not only did I get up early to go running, (which seems to be nearly impossible for me), but I got my best time to date. 26 min 26 sec for 5k. I'm very psyched. I'm usually slower in the mornings just getting up, but I know that if I'm going to do a race then I have to get used to running in the mornings. It's also 20 degrees cooler, which helps.

Getting under that 8 min mile mark is right around the corner. :smash:

I think I'm going to join this club if that's okay???

My freshman year in high school there was absolutely NOTHING I hated more than running/jogging. We had to do it for marching band though and I was always the one that fell slower in the back. Then during my sophomore year, I was doing kind of poorly in my p.e class but if I ran a whole mile without walking then my grade would be pulled up to an A. Well, as sheer will-power would have it I did it! I was *so* proud of myself. And from then until now I've been running on and off.

So now that I'm serious about losing weight I'm going to be determined to jog each day, a little more each day. Yesterday I was out for forty minutes, and jogged about 15 minutes of my walk. So hopefully today will be 20 minutes instead, and so on and so forth
