Runner's Club

I was thinking the same thing. I've been looking at the Nike foot pod thing. The thing with it, though, is you have to set it to your pace on a track. Treadmills are no good. Once it's done it is supposed to be quite accurate. I think the pod costs something like $40. I haven't gotten it yet, but I hope to soon. Tyly has one, and can tell you more.

I've been jockin' on that device for a while now, better PM her, thanks!

SWEET! It only gets easier! ;)

Thanks! I can already tell its easier... I plan to do another 3 tonight!

As far as the foot pod... I checking into the nike one, but from what I understand you have to have the nike shoes... and I don't like nike as far as foot wear goes... they fall apart to easily or that has been my experience. I also looked into the garmond food pod... and I am sure there are others out there too... I am wondering which is the best or most reccomended.

I was told that you don't need Nike. Some Nike shoes have a little pouch for the pod, but if your shoes don't have it, you lace it on.

Oh right on, I will have to look into it a little more... I would also have to find a track to run on...that could prove to be the difficutl part....

Okay so you don't have to have the Nike shoes, but you have to buy a sep. pouch to lace to your shoe... From what I've researched its the least expensive one... the others you have to buy a sensor and a watch to sync it to... and the watches are GPS... So I do believe I will be putting the Nike Sport Kit on my birthday wish list.

I'm just starting and do more walking then running (on a treadmill.)

I'm planning on going camping in 3 weeks. So I have 21 days. Is that enough time to get up to that I might be able to do a nice run (outdoors) ? I'm willing to push myself pretty hard till then to make it. I would really like to be able to go a for a run each morning.

Any advice on what could help me reach that goal? I realize its a little ambitious especially since I'll be switching from a treadmill, but even if I can't run for more than 20 minutes I'd be happy I atleast tried.

Run run run

Anyone out there? I think I am going to try and run 25 min. today. My knees and front of thighs hurt a but I am going to take some Advil and tough it out. Wish I could run more because I am going drinking tonight so the beer has lots of cals in it. Hopefully I can work my way up to 45 min. 5 times a week.

Start out slow and don't be ashamed to walk when you need to. Pay close attention to your body. Always watch your form: never flop around stupidly, try to have good posture, arms at 90 degree angles swinging back and forth, not across your body, pick your legs up properly, and land on the middle of your foot. If you have high arches, get gels for support; flat feet, try taping up your soles. Running is hard in that you are constantly checking your form to make sure it's good. pick up one leg and swivel foot by ankle in both directions 4 times, try to swivel your knees and hips as well--trust me, it works!

You can stretch after 15 minutes of warm up or not at all. I do not stretch, but I do 2 hours of yoga a week and I never had a problem. Take a day off if you feel pain in your knees or other joint-areas. Good luck!

How bad do they hurt? Body awareness un-checked can lead to injury that will stall your workouts for longer than if you just don't work out a day. I always try to swivel my knees in both directions to loosen things up. Make sure your quads are not so much bigger than your hamstrings: that leads to knee problems. I never target my quads when weight lifting (except barbell free squats, that's unavoidable but it works out all sorts of muscle groups) but I always do hamstring curls. Take care, and don't forget to cross train! (weight lifting, kickboxing, yoga, swimming--whatever floats your boat!)

Wednesday I did High Intensity Interval Training. I did it all wrong!

I ran too fast and hard in between sprints. I was miserable for 42 minutes, pouring sweat, and breathing hard, hating life. I ran across a beach and back (about .75 mile one way), then through a harbor and around a meadow and back, sprinting when I could.

I DID get high as a kite after, and when I did yoga later after a nice shower at my gym I was limber but exhausted, but I visualized all my chakras opening in beautiful colors and white light! AMAZING! :)

Yesterday I cross trained by kickboxing, which is similar to HIIT in a way. However, I strained my ACL a month ago and I still cannot stretch as far over my right leg as my left (sitting on my butt on the ground with my legs spread wide, I can bend over and touch my face to my shin on the left side, but on the right side I can barely go 1/4 of the way down :(). I hope to recover from that soon, but since it's in the back of my knee it doesn't affect my running.

I'm doing weights today. My birthday weekend starts soon and I won't bother with exercise until my actual b-day on Monday, where I WANT to run 10 miles but will most likely hit only 6 in the forest hills. We'll see.

Happy trails!! :leaving:

Hey Girlie how long have you been running? Sounds like you are serious about working out. I want to be like that one day.

I just got back from my run. I ran 25 minutes but was struggling. Its sad how fast I can get out of shape. Only 5 years ago I could start running and do 30 min. no problem. Oh well...perils of getting old.

Hmm, I ran first at age 11. But I didn't run regularly until I was 22.

My whole family on my mom's dad's side runs, including my mom. My dad's dad used to run when he was in his 30s, now he rides a bike (gramps is 77). The maternal side is Mexican and Native American: my N.A. great grandfather ran away from Indian boarding school TWICE over hundreds of miles, only to be caught and brought back :p I thought that was pretty cool. Our tribe (Acoma Pueblo, NM) has a history of "Ha'aku runners" who were like messengers for tribe to tribe communication. Why walk when you can run? ;) you can Wiki my tribe, it is "the oldest continually inhabited community in the United States." Cha-ching! :coolgleamA:

I do not run very often: 1-3 times a week. I WILL, though, because I'm gonna do a half marathon. I just like variety (in workouts, friends, food, men....) so I weight train and do yoga and kickboxing, and I want to start Mixed Martial Arts and Rock climbing this winter.

Don't worry,, getting into shape is easy as long as you MAKE yourself work out. It's pretty much like crack :sifone:

Okay my first day of running every day (only a mile if I have to). I did a 1.21 in 18:00 with the mile in 12:30, okay, I can do better than that and that's not like a mental thing either. I was running an 8:10 at the start of the summer, I just did a really tough workout before. So hopefully that time will change really quickly, I don't exactly have a choice, haha.
Gotta make myself run like I make myself smoke crack. :p

Crack

Holy shit Curvie Girl I know what you are talking about when you say you get high on exercise. I just helped my friends moving company move heavy furniture all day and I feel like a million dollars.

Is today your bday?

Curvie -- Thanks for the advice. For clarification, when you say swivel the foot 4x do you mean WHILE running?
