 where to begin- sooo sad.... Mental breakdown on saturday night. There were all these cutoff times for the swim and bike that I really didn't understand. They estimated some 500 to 100 athletes would not make it.

It was scary and I just felt in over my head with the level of athletes I had seen and interacted with. Got trampled on the swim, then the the bike was very cool weather, got behind on my nutrition and hydration, then it rained and the wind and bike sticking to the ground, and then the sun came out and zapped me.

The only thing that brought me thru was some encouragement that "I was one of hese athletes, and I had bled sweat for this"

It went from 78 degrees to 92 degrees within 30 minutes. I was TOTALLY behind on nutrition and hydration, had to sit in the shade and cool. Then the run was on dirt and grass in the direct sunlight 80% of the time, the other 20% was lined on both sides with fans. We did multiple laps.

IRONMAN at this level of exposure at Disney and all that, was very impersonal, very intimidating, and it kicked my tail mentally and physically.

Medical Tent visit and I was not even embarrassed by it. Lots of people didn't finish. AND, at M-Dot, if you don't finish within each section of the course you are dropped off the list.

We get our T-shirts, metals, hats, and goody bags at the end of the race.

Totally sick all night, and still a throbbing head, along with body today.

Thank you so much for the encouragement and support.

Sounds grueling. You sound disappointed....I think competing at that level is awesome! You were passed up by some other hardcore athletes. I , on the other hand was passed up by numerous 10 year old girls and one guy pushing a kid in a stroller in my 5K this weekend LOL

Ohhh Todd, that is just...amazing..for lack of a better word. I'm kinda speechless....and a little mentally messed with... It sounded like the most challenging day and the most overwhelming field. There is NO shame in any of it-none. You did amazing under the circumstances and I hope you realize that and aren't down on yourself about anything-but who am I kidding right? ;). We know there are things at that level that we cannot control-the elements are a BIG one. Its understood going into it. I hope you are getting taken care of at home, okay and resting. Guzzle that water boy.

Edit to add: Remember that your performance here had NOTHING to do with being unprepared or not in "iron" shape. I just wanted to make that clear. ;) If you do come to Cali to do the Vineman it will be a night and day experience. You will rule over the weather having trained in hot AND humidity. It will not be a factor for you.

LOL okay there's that silver lining! haha

Hi FF--

I've been thinking about you and your IRONMAN journey all weekend...what to say? Please don't be disappointed--this whole fitness thing is a journey. Your Ironman race was a milestone but is NOT the end of your journey! You have to look at where you came from and how far you have gotten, and recognize this FIRST Ironman as the stepping stone it is.

There are VERY FEW of us, well, OK, very few of YOU, that can even BEGIN to compete at that level. And wholly sheep! you just kicked some serious a$$ by being able to finish the race in the first place, especially under those conditions!

I am not an elite athlete--you know this...so sorry if I seem oversimplistic--I cannot say that I really understand how you feel. But, I can say that from my perspective that you have won my awe and respect in a truly INSPIRING way!

There is an Ironman in Madison, WI in early fall--you should check it out. You'd have a huge competitive edge over the local competition because of your ability to perform in the Florida heat. Imagine doing the same competition in like 75-85 degrees!

You are AWESOME! Go drink some water and sleep and take care of yourself!

But now that you know what you're up against, you'll be better able to plan for it and act accordingly. As has already been said, very few are able to compete in these sorts of events, so just being in the field earns a high congratulations as it is. Use this as a learning experience to become better for the next event you compete in.

Congrats on finishing! Just wanted to give you another note of encouragement. I have been reading your workouts and you never cease to amaze me by how great of an athlete you are. This race is over, figure out what you need to work on and get out there and start training for your next one! Keep up the great work!

it is all true you guys and gals thabnks so much. It was a tough day, and with a goal of 6 flat, coming in at 7:18 was a heartbreaker.

I will try not to take for grantite the gratitude I have for being there, and completing the event. It was reeeeeaaaaalllyyy BIG.

Matter of fact, if i double it, and finish the 140.6 in 14 hours I'd be happy. That's 3 whole hours before the course closed- LOL :yelrotflmao:

GHG (greenhorn gal) you are right about that- a lil over a year ago I was an injured skydiver who wasn't supposed to run again. And 18 months ago, I was still smokin.

okok,,, pitty party over.

Let's get back to it.

TTYS

p.s. every once in awhile it's ok to take a day off. LIKE TODAY!

Good job man. If you inspire at least one person on this forum, you are a winner in my book. You have done far more than many people; You finished! :)

Now, I am ready for some over-the-net training! :yelrotflmao:

you are an inspiration my friend. You know what it's like now. I know you will take your experience and build on it for next time. No doubt you are a true winner. We all look forward to your 140. I expect you will fare far better. Keep up the good work!!!

FF, congratulations on completing a 1/2 iron man

Don't be dissapointed. Your up against people who have been training for years. And the fact that you were smoking only 18 months ago and out of shape and yet still completed a iron man only 18 months later speaks volumes

I'm proud of you.

OK- 4 days of complete recovery.

140.6 registered for October 25th, Clermont FL, the Great FLoridian.

next race is this coming Friday night, Picnic series obstavcle foot race. details to follow.

Bit late, but gooooood work FF. Your more of a harder worker than i am.

I would noway be able to handle iron man. My race would be pu55y man ;)

weights, lots and lots of weights-

It felt so good to actually do some benching, and some rows, and clean and jerks, and power cleans with deep squats, heck I even threw down some pullups, and floor sweepers, and all sorts of stuff.

Rest an ironman for a week, and then let him loose for 2 hours in the weights! yeah baby!

Georgen, just in case you look- I notice the power cleans are alot harder as I really widen my grip. Is it qa bad strain on my wrists? Do you guys very your grip width on those?

Time for a few weeks of lifting. look out boys! I'm slinging the iron. AND, it is amazing how gassed I can get. There is alot of cardio to lifting.

I like to do heavy sets of few reps, with a short rest- ie:
power clean x 4, 30 sec rest
long bar curl X 4, 30 sec rest
wide grip row x 4, 30 sec rest
repeat 10 times
