Not Stopping This Time

My self-control goal already came into play today at dinner. I got a salmon salad at Rubios. It was delicious, and I love their smoked chipotle salsa. So I added a lot of salsa, diced onions and cilantro. About 70 percent of my way through, my brain started saying "no". I couldn't believe it because it was salad, but with all the extra stuff I added and the water I was drinking, I was quite full before I expected to be. So I just stopped and threw out the rest.
Good for you, that is progress. I wish I could do that, but once I start eating something I almost always finish. I need to control my portions before starting.

Keep up the good work!

Learning to listen to your body´s needs is the best thing you can do for long-term health. Well done!

Great that you were able to feel when your body wanted to stop, and to simply flick away the automatic "clear the plate" habit! That's major change, especially if you were (as I was) brought up to finish everything.
It seems like it's not exactly WHAT I eat that spikes my insulin/weight gain, but HOW MUCH I overeat (how stuffed I feel). Somehow no matter how calorie dense the food is, simply eating too much always seems to have the same effect of spiking my weight and setting back my weight loss.
As well as the pleasure of finding ourselves slimmer and stronger, there's a real intellectual pleasure in finding out so much about how our bodies (and minds!) work, isn't there? An unexpected side-benefit of this whole weight loss and fitness undertaking!

Well done, Kyle on stopping when you were full. Like Rob, I need to control my portion size before it's plated as I grew up having to clear my plate & it is a very hard thing to get that out of your head. You are doing very well :)

That's true. It does feel better to learn about how the body works and be able to make some results with that knowledge. The human body is so mysterious, and it's our responsibility to attend to it.

Yesterday after I ate lunch, I was still very hungry. So I bought an avocado smoothy. I even got tapioca balls in it, which I was a little concerned about, but it just felt appropriate at the moment. I was pretty filled up after that, but I guess the effect wasn't as bad because it was still in the middle of the day? I had a light salad for dinner and I was pretty hungry by 9PM. But I decided it would be wise to forgoe eating that late for weight-loss purposes. I was able to get down under 260 again! This time I think I can be more consistent and not spike up my weight as much. I hope.

Eating more at lunch & less at dinner is what I am trying to do too. Yay for being under 260 again, Kyle :)

Today I spent the whole day at church for a guest lecturer. I had lunch and then the speaker went on until 7PM! It was a great talk, but I ended up sitting all day. By the time we had a chance to eat it was late and my brain was signaling "not hungry". So I let my family get carry-out and eat without me. Since I felt that same sick feeling I had the other night when I gained 4 pounds, I decided to push back against my body a little. For the first time in over 10 years I decided to go for a run outside. It was short, but I felt it kicked my body into a different gear. It also helped get my blood flowing after sitting down at church all day. I sure hope I can lose a little weight today. It would be really nice not to shoot back up into the 260s again for no reason.

I can't imagine your weight going up after a day like that (unless you should be very sore from running as sore muscles are swollen muscles). Interesting or not I should think quite a few people were having secret unkind thoughts about a speaker who kept going that long!

I know! It was hard to have a positive attitude. Someone in my church once said that God is speaking through the pastor for the first thirty minutes. Anything after that, and it's Satan speaking through them.

Sore muscles cause weight gain? Well, yes my back is sore, but probably more due to sitting down too long. I think I was generally right to be cautious about yesterday. Even as lightly as I ate and the short run in the evening, I barely went down 1 lb. (not complaining). My normal weight loss should have been more like 2 lbs. if I ate the way I did. Definitely my body is prone to weight gain when I feel sick like this (congested throat and bloated stomach). If I had eaten dinner I definitely would have gained a few pounds and shot back up over 260 again. It sure is fascinating to pay attention to my body and see the weird ways it behaves under different conditions.

Well this way of being more careful when I feel sick is probably going to help me have more consistent weight loss. Also in the book I recently read The Obesity Code, the author mentioned that food restriction has historically been used as a treatment for illnesses. So apparently eating less when you're sick used to be quite common.

They used to say "starve a fever, feed a cold". In some cases that´s true, but not always:
The thing you´ll notice if you weigh yourself every day (or several times a day) is that much of the short-term variation has to do with water intake, retention (due to salt intake, unaccustomed exercise, sickness and what have you) and gut filling. Not so much the amount of fat, no matter what a body fat scale may say.

Hi, Kyle. If I have to sit for such a long time I retain fluid. I think I also would have gone just a little bit crazy. Going out for a run afterwards was a great idea. The book hasn't arrived from the library yet. I'm looking forward to reading it. I hope you're drinking lots of water with this bug :)

My grandma said that too. But I could never remember which one to starve. So I just fed them all. What if you have both a cold and a fever? Or something else altogether? Better just feed.

Then my stepmother always said food is the best medicine. So you can see where that got me.

My weight didn't budge last night, which is a relief since I was still feeling a little sick. I am trying to drink plenty of fluids, but I will put more effort. I do feel a bit dry.

To be totally honest, I am slightly down today. I know this isn't my therapy session, but I just gotta get it out. I AM happy with the weight loss. Just worked so hard yesterday taking care of family. And I am a little sick. I just feel like I need to take better care of myself in other areas in addition to weight loss. I am feeling a little deprived as far as R&R.

That is totally true. Have you tried natural antibiotics? I mean those from real food? It is the best way to recover, because a natural medicines fight with the illness and making the immune system strong at the same time :)
Chemical medicines fight with illness but makes the immune system weak which is sad that so many people prefer them.

This is your diary and it's as good a place for (pseudo-)therapy as any. Many of us use it for that purpose. I totally agree that it's important to look after yourself, especially if you're unwell. Rest and relaxation are so important for health and happiness!

This is your space, Kyle. I find getting your feelings out is good therapy. Feeling sick would not be helping. Try to take good care of yourself too xo

Sorry that you were down - and I hope a night's sleep has helped. I absolutely agree that we all need to care for ourselves in ways additional to weight loss - care for ourselves physically and emotionally - relaxation in green surrounds, calm and peace, sleep, even skin care - that's one of the things I'm remembering this month. And of course since we are part of our families, their well-being contributes to ours as well - good for you for pitching in with the family stuff. It can be exhausting, but I hope there are really good outcomes.
