Weight-Loss New WLF Team Challenge

Weight-Loss
I received clarification from Bundybrad about the challenge:

Soups count as food, not drink, so that's no problem. Juiced fruit and vegetables are okay if they're freshly juiced, not store-bought ones. Milk in tea or coffee DOES count, so if you do that, no points. Also, no low calorie drinks or flavoured water, just plain.

He gave us clarification of a couple of extra items so I will pass the info round...

hi guys, just to fill you in
milk on cereal ok
milk in coffee or tea is not allowed
no drinking milk but allowed on cereal
not diet drinks, alcohol etc
real juiced fruit and veg is fine but not the stuff you get at the shop
no flavoured water as that contains calories
so it really only leaves plain water, black tea and coffee

Cory has inspired me to quit soda, so this challenge is perfect. Anyone with lower back issues like sciatica, I have found the U.S. Marine crunch to be easier on my sciatica than the standard situp. A write up and you tube video is below for those interested.

During the abdominal crunch portion of the Physical Fitness Test, the marine must begin with his shoulder blades and buttocks on the floor. A set of perfect repetitions are required to score points for this exercise. A perfect repetition occurs when, beginning with your arms pressed firmly against your ribs or chest, you raise your shoulder blades and touch your thighs with your elbows or arms before returning to the starting position.

Omega - true, it wasn't mentioned in the clarification, so thanks for putting it out there.

Belinda - Mio contains artificial sweeteners, and there are no calorie free artificial sweeteners in existence. The amount in one serving might be small enough for Kraft to get away with printing '0' on the label, but 3 litres of water a day with that stuff in it is certainly not going to be calorie free. It can't. Also, after looking it up (I'd never heard of it, and it doesn't seem to be available in the UK, and in fact most parts of Europe), and looking at the ingredients, I think I'd rather stay away from it. It's got more chemicals in it than coke zero and similar things, which aren't exactly healthy to start with.

In general, please keep in mind that artificial sweeteners are not calorie free either. So even black coffee or tea with a couple of sweeteners in it will make you lose those points. Best of luck to all, and I'm interested in who manages to actually get those points, but I certainly won't be one of them.

Then I'm going to skip on those points. I'm not going to be drinking 3L of straight water and nothing else for week. That'll make me resent water and I'd rather just avoid that. I'm thinking of the long-term, after the challenge is over, and I'd rather keep up drinking water.

For further clarification - I sent Brad an email listing the queries and this was the response.

Hi Omega,

milk on cereal is fine, eat the canned fruit but dont drink the juice, no diet drinks like diet coke etc, soup is fine as its a meal, juiced vergies and fruit is fine but not shop bought products, if its a meal thats fine but just not a general drink during the day, no milk in tea or coffee

A number of questions have cropped up for "drink no calories". You will basically need to give a ruling on whether each one is ok or not:

- milk on cereal
- canned fruit with fruit juice in the can
- diet drinks which are very low calorie
- soup
- juicing fruit and veg for a meal
- slimfast style meal replacement shakes
- milk in tea or coffee

there may be more in the challenge threads

This means that there is another ruling not otherwise listed. If eating canned fruit - as a meal or otherwise (I have fruit at three meals a day - breakfast, lunch and supper - and it is often canned to aid me in portion control) you have to eat the fruit but throw away the fruit juice. I am not going to throw away that quantity of healthy fruit juice. I am happy with the calorie contribution to my meal and it would throw away vitamins etc.

I'm not going to bother with these points. I like my fruit and yoghurt meals and they are incredibly healthy.

Since so many drinks with negligible calories are being ruled out because they are not ZERO calories - I feel obliged to point out to everyone that drinks like black unsweetened coffee and tea for instance do not ACTUALLY contain ZERO calories. We just class them as doing so - like we do for a host of very low calorie diet drinks.

I guess that will leave everyone with plain tap water.

Yeah, it seems like tap water is the only drink really, and I have a feeling that a lot of people will struggle with it. But - it's a challenge. Somebody might actually be able (and willing) to stick with it. I'm not. I can't exist without my coffee in the morning, for example. And I don't want to, either. As Belinda said, having nothing but plain water all day (if I could drink water to start with) would make me hate water, and probably put me off ever drinking it again. And while it's supposed to be challenging, it's not supposed to put people off healthy eating/drinking.

Believe it or not, the only thing I would have to give up is coffee 2-3x per week. ALL that I drink is water!
I will make points some days, but may sacrifice a day or two if I'm feeling the coffee/caffeine pinch. I can understand why many people will not do this one, though, as many of us have left liquids alone as a "sacred cow" during these times of sacrifice.

Dumb question, with the ZERO calorie angle.

It will then be a challenge to give up my fruit/veggie juices, but I can hack it for seven days (I hope:svengo:), but whats the reading on a lime slice in water, is that out too?

If your using juiced veg/fruit for a meal that is fine, and if your using fresh lime/lemon wedges to add flavour thats fine, not shop bought additives or shop bought flavoured water

Also as I said in the email to omega tea and coffee is ok as long as you have no milk, sugar or artificial sweetener in it, I hope I have answered everyone's questions and good luck with he challenge

For this week, when calculating the percentage lost, do we go off our original weight or our weight from the last weigh-in?

BundyBrad19, nice work on the challenge! All the hullabaloo it has brought up is a sure sign that it's challenging.

I'm a bit disappointed at the number of folks that have just said they won't do it. If you can't make it a single day without drinking calories or artificial sweetners that's bad, but not even trying? Come on people where is your competitive spirit? One day! Just one! I'm getting them all! If I get to pick a mini challenge it will be the exact same thing.

Sorry for the late update. Still violently ill, and no sign of getting better (actually, according to the doc I saw today, I'm getting worse). I'll put all the updates up tomorrow. We also have a new member, goonfairy, who will join team Fire.

As for the challenge - the competitive spirit is all nice and well, but there are very few things that I allow myself as it is. My daily two cups of coffee are one of those things, and I won't have coffee without milk and sweeteners. I also need my first cup to get me going, otherwise my blood pressure will be down in the dumps all day. Also, as said before, plain water doesn't do it for me, and if I flavour it, it's with lemon concentrate - which isn't allowed according to challenge rules. And I absolutely understand Omega's stance on it - I wouldn't throw something healthy and valuable away for the sake of a single point per day either.
That said, everybody is free to handle it whichever way they want - if people think they can do it, more power to them. And should the challenge come up again, I guess it will be the same outcome.
