I think helping someone else out is really rewarding. Are you still volunteering in the op shop, Pete? I know you are much busier with your job.

absolutely. In this case the bloke still hasn’t got back to me so looks like I bought myself a bike. Not that it’s a bad thing. I can use it for shopping runs.

I’m still volunteering there on saturdays but I’m planning to give it up in a couple of months. My major project at work is due to complete at end of financial year then I move onto another project which will involve a lot of travel for a couple of months so I just won’t be able to commit the time to the AWL. After that I really don’t know what my job will be.

Rode into work today. This time I parked very close by and just rode the linear park trail into the cbd. i parked in the same spot yesterday but rode 35km yesterday because I took a detour to Henley beach and back on the alway home. Today only 10km. A0093D23-F447-4FB0-A917-0749C7D5F7DC.png

Hi everyone,

I'm just checking in here. If anyone was wondering I’m still alive and still cycling. Everything is good in my world. I’m just very busy working loooooong hours and doing a lot of training with my dog and my partners so that we can move in together (my dog HATES other dogs) so it doesn’t leave much time to check in here at the moment.

I’ll try check in and read any updates etc as time permits but probably won’t be very active here again for a while yet .

hope everyone is well and your goals are being ticked off.

In case I forget later I’d like to thank everyone for your support and encouragement on this journey. It means a lot. I’d especially like to thank Cate and Rob who I’ve had the most interactions with.

It's great hearing that all is well with you & you're going to be moving in together. I hope your dogs learn to get along. Our son & his GF have a similar situation. Her female dog is a big galumpher & doesn't get along with other dogs & our son's dog is much smaller & had a tough early life. I think they are getting along better together. Hopefully, they will move in together one day.
You have been more than welcome to any support I may have given you. It would be nice if we get an update from time to time. Your cycling & encouragement got Rob cycling, which is great.

Hey TM, good to see you posting again. The dog training has to be a bit of a challenge. We usually have 2 dogs, a younger one and an older one. When we lose one and have to replace it the older dog never likes it, but so far have always come to accept the younger one. We usually pay more attention to the older one for a while, kind of reassurance they are not being replaced. Good luck with it.

I’d especially like to thank Cate and Rob
I don't see much you have to thank me for, it seems to me to be the other way round. When I first started you gave me a lot of support and that really helped. And as Cate says you inspired me to get into biking. I have given up on daily rides through the winter, too much cold and snow, but I get on the bike at least once a week no matter just to make sure I can still do it. I will try to find a good snow free ride this weekend, I've been looking at a real mountain bike trial, not a tough one at all, but maybe a good place to start. Its out west in the desert where we usually have less snow.

Good luck with the move in.

Good to see you, TM - I hope you're not wilting in the heat. That's happy news about you and your girlfriend planning to move in together. Best wishes, and I look forward to seeing updates from you whenever you post them. :)

Hey everyone, thought I’d check in.

everything is going well, I’ve had to do some thinking recently about work/life balance so I’ve reluctantly resigned from my volunteer role in the op shop. I’ll be finishing up there on 1st March.

As I’ve said before I’m just flat chat with projects at work and I’ve been struggling to get much meaningful riding done; still going out and getting some in but nothing of any great substance. As such I put on 5kg (didn’t/don’t care really because I knew it would come off again as soon as I started riding properly again; just had to make sure I DID start again).

a few weeks ago I went for a ride and it was obvious my fitness has decreased so I made a commitment to riding a minimum of 20kms every day in February. I’m now 8 days in and well and truly on track with 250ish kms for the month with an average of 31kms a day. I’m not trying to break any speed or distance records; the 20kms is nice and easy. It’s simply a number to make sure I get out and pedal every day.

8 days in and I’ve dropped 3 of the 5kg already.

thought I’d write about this because I recall someone asking about maintaining weight and being worried about regaining. I guess as with everything really catching it early is key.

see you soon everyone.

here is a nice (unedited) photo of a beachside sunset I got to see on one of my rides this week.

I know that beach! I know the pelican on top of the pole! :) Lovely photo, and thanks for checking in and sharing it with us.

Good for you for the time you've given volunteering at the op shop - I think they are the most terrific institution ever, and I give thanks to all the volunteers who keep them going. (inc you! - also salute to you for knowing when the work-life balance meant that you had to give it away.)

That's a real cautionary tale, about the five kilo drifting on in such a short time - great that you didn't stress about it, but just took things in hand, knowing your own body and how you were going to deal with the extra weight. Calm, in control, great biker - that's you! :D

hey there, to be fair that’s 5kg since 1st November. Short time yes but not as bad as I probably made it seem.

I knew it was happening; my caloric intake was the same as when I was riding every day but with work, family and the weather I just wasn’t able to. There was nowhere else to go but up!

no matter though; very easily resolved.

It’s currently 5:59am and I’m waiting at the train station. I’m working in the cbd for the next 5 weeks so perfect opportunity to get the train in and ride home. 35ishkms in the bag every day without trouble. im bringing the commuter bike I bought to give away (but couldn’t) so I’ve stuffed the pannier bags with all the clothes I’ll need for the week and I’ve got my laptop on my shoulder. I think I’ve added about 30kgs to the bike! Good thing it can all stay in my office.

I love that the trains have space for a bike or two (or more, I guess, at six in the morning). Have you heard that the Grange line might be closing? :(

It certainly comes in handy. Gotta pay for an extra ticket in peak time but I guess that’s fair. There were 4 other bikes on the train this morning. I was the only one who paid (off peak is 9-3. Any other time you must have a ticket.

didn’t hear that about grange. I wonder why that is? I don’t think I’ve ever caught a train out that way but I imagine it’s not dead.

I love seeing that.
I'm glad you are back riding again, Pete.
35'ish km every day? Very impressive :)

just got home from work. Got a puncture and walked the last 3kms but a good ride. Not strenuous; just hard enough to know id done something.

35kms ticks by pretty quickly. 1 1/4 hours ... beat the train (with the wait times included) plus got my exercise for the day.

I heard it by email from a friend, so I'd better double-check, before spreading it further! I thought you might have used that line because of the coastal bike path.

nah if I ride that way I ride from my place (Elizabeth) or drive to Semaphore or Henley and ride from there.

I’ll keep an eye on that though.

Thank you!!! I think myself it's a very important line - but then I'm really, really keen on all public transport.
(One of my constant gripes is how poor public transport is outside the city areas - and I'm keen on trains of all sorts, too.)
