Marsia's Diary

Thanks so much, Cate! I thought I had worked on my perfectionism, but there is more lurking in the shadows! Negative thoughts can be so sneaky!!

I found a pair of pants I didn't used to be able to even get over my hips and wore them today, and at first they were fine, but then started to almost fall off by the end of the day! I inherited LaMa's problem!! So even though I am not losing weight, I am slimming down a little. So maybe I have some little muscles now!! :)

You two & your falling down pants! I'm looking forward to that problem :blush5: I'm jealous :)

Your husband is right about full-body exercise burning more calories than isolated movements but the stepper should be full-body if you do it correctly. Which most people don't, of course.
Yay on your pants growing larger!

lol I noticed my white jeans yesterday really annoying as I had to keep yanking them up but I'm far away from them falling down.

Marsia I used to love Zumba and it does burn serious calories. I love the Leslie sansone walking workouts too as they incorporate arms and legs and waist and shoulder etc .
Just need to commit to my 30 mins a day .

I too get so overwhelmed with all. I constantly feel like I chase my tail . I think I might go back to my task list today . Had worked well for me but I stopped .

Had friends over to play German board games. Had a healthy wonton soup with lots of veggies and shrimp for lunch, then took a nice hike with them to a Buddhist temple in the woods. Then played lots of games and had a nice quiche and big salad. Really fun afternoon and night!

Great company, delicious, healthy food & a hike to a Buddhist temple? Wow! Sounds excellent, Marsia xo

Hi Petal! I have done a Leslie Sansone workout a while back and really liked it! When I get my dvds unpacked, there might one of her in there. I hope so!! The Zumba is fun because I am concentrating so hard on moving like the people in the video the time really flies!

I get overwhelmed, too, but it's fine because each day is a new clean slate and chance to try and see what works again! What is on your task list? Is it a list of kinds of exercise or chores that burn calories? That sounds like a good idea!

Thanks Cate! It's so nice having the house done finally so we can have people over again! And it was nice eating healthy and having them compliment my food!

Regarding calories burned per exercise, its all bull. Every individual body is different and while Person 1 might burn 450 calories doing lunges, Person 2 might only burn 200. Also, the amount of calories burned per minute changes depending on how many minutes into the exercise you were in. For instance, on the 12th minute of exercise, Person 1 might be burning calories at a rate of 40 calories a minute and on the 20th minute 80 calories per minute while Person 2 might be burning calories at 25 calories per minute on the 12th minute and 40 calories at the 20th minute. Speed and stamina and strength all factor into it. The best way to figure out what exercises you are burning more calories during is to listen to your body (are you sweating more? are your muscles having to work harder?) and doing the same exercises daily or twice daily for a few weeks and take your body measurements.

Remember, the most important rule to weightloss: We all have different bodies so we all lose weight differently.

Hi Northern Dreamer! I realize that the calories burned will be different for people in differing degrees of being in shape, who weigh different amounts, and who may have stronger muscles that burn more calories, etc. I also marvel at how much difference there is between calories burned on average between the different exercises. It's not like I am some super athlete who has to optimize the number of calories burned or anything, so I am just going to pay attention that whole body workouts are probably bigger calorie burners and leave it at that.

I also am not super accurate about tracking the number of calories I eat a day, so I just ball park things to be sure I am not way over eating or under eating. It's so highly variable whether I gain water weight or suddenly lose a couple of pounds that I am just estimating what I eat and focusing more on eating healthy within the calorie range of about 1400 calories a day. It seems like when I am less stressed I tend to lose weight. Is it like that for you, too?

I was just looking at an article by the Mayo Clinic about which is more important for weight loss, diet or exercise. They say both are important. I'll put the quote from them in bullet form so it's easier for me to remember (I'm a visual learner):
  • "Diet has a stronger effect on weight loss than physical activity does;
  • physical activity, including exercise, has a stronger effect in preventing weight regain after weight loss.
  • Weight loss through diet without physical activity, especially in older people, can increase frailty because of age-related losses in bone density and muscle mass. Adding aerobic and resistance training to a weight-loss program helps counter the loss of bone and muscle."

Stress does affect me, especially when I have too many things going on in my life, I tend to eat more poorly and exercise less and sleep less and spend less time outdoors. ALL ARE EQUALLY IMPORTANT. People tend to undervalue sleep and the outdoors. If you live in a place where air quality is bad then the outdoors isn't so good but if air quality is good, the fresh air is good for our lungs and body as a whole plus the sunlight benefits us as well and time in nature can be good for decreasing anxiety and stress.

My big failing is lack of sleep which of course factors back to lack of time. I think when my youngest, who is two, is older, I will gradually get back to better sleeping.

Oh, I remember those days fondly!!! I miss having a two year old so much - just want to clone them and keep one at every age!! Are you on the forum to lose pregnancy weight? It's been 12 years for me and still working at losing it, but adding in permanent exercise this time, so I succeed!

I think after a while we get used to finding the exercise we choose on our apps to match what we do. I try not to eat back my exercise calories anyway, but a ballpark figure is good enough for me. You are doing well, Marsia xo

My pre-baby weight was 178 so prior to pregnancy I was about 18 pounds overweight. 3 babies in 9 years put me almost to 250 so that would be about 72 pounds of baby weight although much of it was from between pregnancies. I was extremely physically active prior to having kids.

Marsia I love the sound of your day with friends . Pure idyllic .

I am trying to also not eat my exercise calories . I’m really learning so much from MFP .

Also I notice that my itracker adds my calories used in exercise into the MFP which is great . I tell you for the amount of exercise you need to do to to work off a bar if chocolate it’s really not worth it .

That's why exercise should be fun! We all need to move regularly if we want to have a decent shot at growing old healthily and if it feels like a chore you're not going to keep it up long term.

That’s why after all these years I have decided never to step in the gym again . I love my walking and do like my Leslie workouts .
I did try the leaders of the biggest losers DVDs before and Hated them . Your right LaMa we need to enjoy what we do

Same with me. I was 185 before pregnancy, and went up to 219 recently, and just had to do something to get my health back. I wasn't that active before having a kid though. I was in my early 40s and now early 50s. Definitely time to get moving again so I don't have bone density problems later on. Can you take your kids to a playground and exercise there? I did some of that, but only had one kid to keep track of. Three must be a handful!!
