Power is back on, Peachick number 3 has hatched and I have my car back :)

Also got 2 chicken chicks to teach the peachicks how to eat and drink, peafowl are visual learners and need to be taught the basics unlike baby chickens. However the 2 peachicks in the brooder are already jumping and testing out their wings.

I think living in regional Australia could be a shock to the system for anyone that is used to the convenience of city living, including most Australians. Counter to the image that Australia has, most of the population are urban dwellers with minimal understanding of country Aus.

In addition to last post

Rural living is usually a lot more community minded, like a couple of days ago I had 2 young Jack Russel dogs wander into the house, phoned a neighbour who phoned another etc. and the dogs were home within 30 minutes, back across the paddocks from whence they came.

The key is not being afraid of local wildlife (the big Monitor Lace Lizard was back on the verandah today and I chased him with a broom) and be prepared to fend for yourself for a several days at a time in case of natural disasters keeping a supply of fresh water and food for 3-7 days and a generator for power outages. If I need to the family can survive at home for a week without any outside contact.

Emergency Survival Kit List | Get Ready QLD this is a minimum kit households in Queensland should have.

Edit: The amount of food stored for emergency use does not include food in the pantry, fridge or freezers for normal use. Freezers are good for a little while without power so long as nobody opens them.

Thanks for the explanation, that's really interesting. I'm pretty sure my parents would be good for weeks if they had water but I'd be in trouble right away even with water - an electric stove has drawbacks...

While our weather does not get as extreme as yours we are well used to power outages & have the means to cook (gas bbq & wood heater) when it does go out. Candles are always handy & I always have water in containers. It went out the other night when a kookaburra hit the transformer. You're right. Most people are city dwellers & have no idea of how things work in the country.

Yep we also have the gas BBQ for cooking, the wood heater is not needed up here but certainly would be essential where you are Cate.

Todays exercise was hiking again at 7:30 am this morning, chose the short rough track, 3 km in 40 minutes power walking with 5kg pack 680 calories. Only slowing down to navigate the slippery steep rocky bits with the tree roots sticking out.

my time will always be slow compared to most people, I have very short legs and not just because I am short. If my husband is walking at a normal walking pace (he is 5'7) I have to jog to keep up.

Feeling terrible, it is a good thing there is no junk in the house to eat. How do you explain to a 3 year old that her fluffy silkie chickens she adores and loves to cuddle as soon as she comes home from childcare have been dismembered by a fucking Goanna. I was inside and heard nothing, son 3 came home from work and found some of the bits still in the pen along with a lot of feathers.

partial good news, the little fluffy rooster escaped and returned to the coop tonight, hubby has cleaned up the globs of dismembered chickens and little miss was distracted by the baby peafowl chicks. Tomorrow after a trip to the hardware store we rebuild the silky pen into something super secure before looking for some replacement silky hens for the young rooster who is now on his own.

so far today has been park and playground with little miss who loves the flying fox, we had the playground to ourselves for ages. I should not have worn blue today, March flies sting a LOT when they bite.

Salad for lunch while little miss was comatose on her bed when we got home, it takes a lot to wear her out lol

New chicken yard (Fort Knox) is progressing well but may be a little over engineered for a chicken pen, nothing unwanted is getting in or out when it is finished lol Goanna, fox and snake proof.

This afternoon will be bike maintenance with little miss, need to tighten her training wheels, add some air to front tyre and check chain.

I had to look up the flying fox: I love that thing! My nephews would stay on it for hours and hours as well.

Given where you live I don't think it can be too safe unless the midges can't get out anymore...

I was stung twice by March flies over a week ago & had a nasty reaction to both bites. I hate them. I bet the chicken pen will be amazing.

Pen is on hold, I am at the hospital waiting for Ds brain scan results to be sent back to the hospital here. The heavy frame on one side of the pen fell on the back of his head and forced his forehead to hit the tmber he was woking on with son 3.

He has pain and numbness in different places but the local hospital has nobody to read the scans which have been sent to a big hospital down the coast.

That´s awful! If he´s able to tell you about pain and numbness I assume he´s conscious though, which is a good thing. Speedy healing and fingers crossed he´ll be fine as soon as the swelling goes down.

He is very sore but ok, no fractures and brain ok, concussion, a couple of nasty lumps, soft tissue injuries (neck and shoulder), numbness subsided before leaving the hospital, will be making followup appointment with our GP today.

we built the walls of the pen on the ground before raising them (2 people to lift). It was one of these panels which fell while he was trying to get another panel into place. Each panel is 2 meters square and framed with heavy timber.

Ouch, ouch. Poor, D!
