G8r80 and GT2003: onward!

My partners makin' me look bad, hehehe. Nothing since Saturday. My wife and I are actually doing Christmas with the kids tonight at our home. I'm thinking I'll probably go to my parents tonight which will leave me more than enough time to hit the trails and the gym for the rest of the week. I'm still kind of disappointed in my 5K performance on Saturday. But, my goal of a 5K in less than 30 minutes may be broken right around the new year. But, not if I don't get out there and do something!

Not much effort the last two days.

Slacking!!!! Nothing for.....EVER! Christmas with the kids was good, came to the folks house on Christmas eve. Step-dad with bad COPD and emphysema. He ended up in the hospital today. So, no work out. However, eating still going decent. Going home in the morning and my sister is going to hold down the fort here until later in the week. So, things are hopefully on the upswing. Wish my step-dad luck. He's 84 and in poor health so he needs it. Take care all, Greg

Yesterday:

Early morning gym workout:

bench press: 135# x 6, 165#x7x2, 165#x5. 7 reps at 165 is a new pr for me.
chinups: 6, 4, 5. pullups: 4. Couldn't get going on these
standing cable flies: 10x3. I am ready to up the weight on these.
skullcrushers: 60# dumbbell, held with two hands. 10x2. Up from 1 set
squats: 135#x6x3. I need to do these more often.

Later, went out of town and went mountain biking (in Florida, so not truly "mountain" biking) 7.5 miles. First 5 were semi-technical but not aerobic, but last 2.5 were tough climbs.

Today: 27 miles on mountain bike on road. Avg. speed = 16 mph.

Sorry I havent checked in for a while. Bi Lateral breathing is extremely important if you ever want to be a sucessful open water swimmer. Depending on what way the current or wind is blowing you may one day be forced to breath on another side :D just my two cents

Thanks for checking in and the advice, NBS. I agree - I need to learn to breath both sides, but I don't think I will become a bilateral breathing because I can't go 3 strokes without a breath comfortably. Instead, I need to learn to breath on my left. The next time I go to the pool, I will go left side exclusively.

Couldn't get anything going today after three tries. First, I tried to run this morning, but I felt dogged and after having to stop after one 1.5 mile lap for a potty break, I couldn't get my body to continue.

Later I went to the gym:

chinups: 5, 4, 5. Lousy.
Bench press: 135x6, 165x7, 5, 6, 5. This was okay
Seated hammer curls: 40#x10x3. Felt heavy and sluggish.

Then I went to the pool but couldn't get anything going, just felt winded and tired. So, I worked on some left-breathing drills, kicking drills with zoomers and without zoomers, swam 500 yards with pull buoy, and went home.

If I am dogged tomorrow, I am going to suspect overtraining.

Since you're taking it off, I'll go ahead and get my butt back to training.

2.5 mile run, just under 25 minutes. Felt good to be "on the road again". It feels like forever since I've done anything!

My only deviation from my pledge of taking a week off, is I am in a pushup contest. I did 4 sets of 25 both yesterday and today.

Ran approximately 3 miles in 29:33. Am going to do a couple of sets of pushups then call it a day. (3 sets of 15 push ups per set)

Step-dad still in hospital, doing better but will need skilled nursing facility for a few weeks to get stronger.

Company coming over later so getting all my ducks in a row early.

Weighed this morning, 204.5, the lowest yet and I haven't done anything but eat whatever I wanted for a few weeks. Maybe ramped up my metabolism. Don't know but less than 15 pounds to go now. Talk to you all later, Greg

I'm rededicating myself to eating better. I've been monitoring my calories to a certain extent but not to the extent that I should have. I've maintained right around 205 pounds for a while now but haven't lost what I should have secondary to nothing more than being lax/undisciplined. The holidays are over. There isn't any "bad" food left laying around so now is the time to slash these last 15 pounds. As promised, new pictures at 200 (or maybe 202, I'll have to go back and re-read my journal).

Ate clean today. Came in at just under 2000 calories; 45% carbs, 25% protein, 30% fat.

Exercise: 60 minutes on treadmill walking at 4 mph

Keep it up, Greg! Sorry to hear about your pop-in-law.

Didn't get anything done yesterday (Saturday). Today, I flew to State College, Pennsylvania.

Today: heavy full body workout at gym. Lots of heavy compounds today.

Bench press: 135#x6
Left rotator cuff started acting up and I couldn't go on. I took a couple of ibuprofens and hope this helps. No pushups today; hopefully resume tomorrow.

Dead lift: 225# x 5 x3. These things really work the entire body. I think I'll limit myself to 225# to reduce risk of injury.

Chinups: 7, 5, 5. No energy for these.
Parallel bar pullups: 4, 4, 4. Ditto
Wide arm pullups: 3, 2. Did 3 half negatives for :15 each.
My chinups are disproportionately stronger than my pullups, which suggests that my arms are disproportionately stronger than my back. I am gonna do the negatives until my wide arm pullups are within 75% of my chinups.

Squats: 135#x5, 155#x5x2. These are incredibly tiring for me.

Inverted pullups (lying under bar and doing pullups to work back): 10x2. These were really hard and I don't think I was doing these right. My biceps were already tired from chinups, which may have been a factor. To continue work on back, I went to bent over rows instead.

Bent over rows: 40# dumbbell x 10 x 3. I hadn't done these before and started out with 30#, which seemed too easy, then moved up to 40#, which seemed to difficult and my form went to crap. So, I think I'll back down to 35# dumbbells.

3.1 miles on treadmill at 1%: 28:30.

New Years resolution #1 - ACHIEVED! 5K in 29 minutes 10 seconds today on the treadmill after work. I'm happy about it but am going to change it to a 29 minute goal in an actual road race/timed event. Why, BECAUSE I CAN DO THAT TOO!

Have gotten more specific with my weight goal due to a challenge at work today. 190 lbs by March 1st. That's right at 2 lbs per week, a little less. So, I'll have to stay focused or lose the challenge....and that's not gonna happen.

I'm not saying anything about the half marathon goal. It's in the process and I'm gradually working towards it. I will achieve it but I'm keeping it under wraps for now.

Weights and stationary bike tomorrow. Will post weight in the morning.

Did my own sprint tri at the YMCA:

45 spinning class

swim: 200 yards, 250 yards kicking drills, 200 yards. My lats were burning during the swim, major DOMS, from the negative pullups that I did yesterday, which kept me from going farther.

5k on treadmill: 26:20

I weighed in at an even 204 this morning. The lowest I remember being in the last 5 years I know, maybe even 10.

Weights: Bench press, 5 sets, 135 pounds just to do a little bit. Threw in some rows and lat pull downs too.

Cardio: 35 minutes on the treadmill at a 10 min/mile pace; 3 1/2 miles.

My wife informed me that our marriage is over, and in an email no less, lol. Actually it's better. I don't think the situation would have improved but I would have tried to make it work for her and the kids. But, it likely would have been dysfunctional. So, all is actually better this way. The HELL was not knowing and since that's over I'm feeling much more at peace. She also appears quite willing to work with me about custody/visitation.

Isn't that enough for 1 day? Talk to you all later, Greg
