I have not tried cross fit but I know people get hooked on it and become cross fit junkies! Be careful!!!!

Hi DR,

I have heard that too. I think crossfit is for advanced fitness people and young people-lol. I don't want to injure myself so I am going to take this really slow. Thanks for the heads up.

Hope the week is going well for you! :)

Thanks Jen. I hope the week is going well for you too!!

Well two weeks today since I got laid off. Been firing a lot of resumes out there but I think there is 100's of resumes received for each job. I will keep at it though. That being said my body weight is dropping. I have been swimming every morning and running 3 or 4 times a week. So some good news I guess. I am close to fitting into my little clothes so that feels good.

Got a run on April 24 so I am going to be running hills starting next week. Oh the PAIN-lol. It will be worth it as the 10K run I am doing has a huge 2 K hill in it. So as much as it is going to hurt to run the hills it will help in the long term.

My wife and I are starting Carb cycling. We have been eating low carb for about 3 months now with success but my wife has hit a plateau and as I am always reading running and fitness books, I stumbled across a Chris Powell book. He is the trainer from Extreme Weight Loss. He has an eating plan that has a low carb day alternating with a high carb day with a one cheat day a week. We are going to try it and see if it helps with the plateau and if it works.

Hope one of those job applications connects with the right job for you. It's good that you are making the most of the extra time & that your weight is continuing to drop. Carb cycling sounds interesting.

Good luck with the job hunting! I'm interested to see how the carb cycling goes. I've always liked Chris Powell. He seems like a non-scary trainer. haha! Have fun on those hills! :)

Ugh - mind if I ask what your specialty is? I have a cousin in Edmonton who might be able to help. Not that I can attest to your skills or anything, but any little bit helps, right?

Awesome news that the fitness is going as well as it, keep up the good work!

Well, long story but I was only laid off for two weeks. Weird the guy that started about a month before me ( hence the layoff for me) gave his notice. So they asked me to come back. So my daily swimming has gone by the wayside. Oh well, I guess a paycheque is more important.

We started the carb cycling this week. I have noticed that I am full all the time ( you eat 5 meals a day) and your calories are split up into those 5 meals. On a low carb day you only eat some carbs for breakfast. On high carb days you eat carbs at every meal but still stay within your calorie count. On Sunday you have a cheat day. I am feeling pretty good so far and I think it is working but since this is the first week- we will see.

I am almost down to my goal weight again but will keep on this carb cycling as long as my wife is on it. She still needs the support and I don't need to eat pizza-haha.

Running is going well. Not getting out as much as I would like but 2-3 times a week should get me past the 10K run.

Thanks, Cate.

Hi Jen,

I read his books. Not sure if this is going to work or not but I will let you know. The logic is there but not sure of the reality yet.

Thanks, LJ. I am actually in I.T. Jobs are available outside of the Oil and Gas that is so prevalent in Alberta. Now that I was laid off and am back - I am not sure if I am going to stay here anyway. You know the old saying- fool me once - shame on you, fool me twice- shame on me.

I just realized that is has been 6 weeks since I have posted here. I have been looking over other posts but nothing from me-lol. Things are good with me. Diet with the carb cycling is okay. I haven't noticed much difference with eating low carb or the carb cycling. I feel better with eating some carbs but low carb for me seems to work for me.

I just finished a 10 KM run here called the First Responders 1/2 Marathon. It was good to get back to the running scene again. It was cool here so that made the running better as I don't like to run in the heat. I think there was about 600 people in the various 1/2 Marathon, 10K,5K and 1K fun runs. So lots of participation and raised some money for Mental Health which is always good. Time was all right- not my best 10K but considering the amount of training I did- I am happy.

One thing about the low carb that I have noticed is my running stamina. You burn carbs when you exercise and with the low carb eating I have been doing, the tank is empty. I didn't feel too bad but noticed at about 8K that I was feeling it. I may need to up my carbs a little on the longer distances.

Weight still coming off which is a bonus. I am just about back to where I was before. Although I am headed to Mexico for a holiday in a couple of weeks. All inclusives are not a dieter's friend but I think I will do okay. I am in the right mindset and I may indulge a little but not too much.

I am thinking once again about trying a triathlon. They have a try- tri here, where the distances are significantly less that the sprint or Olympic distances but gives you the feeling of what it would be like to do three sports in a row. I have been toying with the idea for a while now and I think it is time to try it. The only thing is, I am scared of water-lol. I will have to get over that and get working on my swimming if I am going to meet this goal. Plus I will need to get on my bike and hit the gym. Sounds daunting but I enjoy a challenge.

Thanks Butterfly.

I can't believe that once again it has been so long since I posted anything here. I really have to check on everyone's diary yet but will post in my own first.

Mexico was awesome. I overdid it a little but considering it was an all-inclusive I did all right. I gained about 3 pounds which has since disappeared. I am not a big drinker so it was mineral water and bottles and bottles of water as the temp was about 88 everyday. My wife and I did some very long walks so wore some of my over indulgences off-lol.

I am a sweets guy and the desserts is what I tended to over it on but I have been back home for a while so all is good now. Went right back to my normal way of eating.

I just completed a City Chase here. It is much like the Amazing Race but is held in your own city. You have to figure out clues and the clues tell you where you have to go. Once you are there you have to do a challenge. Did some axe throwing , swing dance, rode a tricycle through an obstacle course to just name a few. Also ran about 24 KM over the 6 hours. Tired and sore the day after and still now a couple of days later. Damn I am too old for this-lol. There was a lot of young people in this chase and not a lot of older people so I felt good as I was able to complete it in the 6 hour time frame. It was a lot of fun too so I will probably do it again next year. Not only that but we had a huge storm in the middle of it. Rain- hail- thunder and lightening. Was soaked by the time I was finished but nice thing about it is I don't melt-lol. I have some of my best runs in the rain.

Now time to set another goal. Triathlon season will be over by the time I am ready to do one so I will have to wait until next year. I have to work on my swimming as it sucks.

I may have to sign up for another running race. Something in the 10KM range is good. That distance is perfect as it keeps me in good enough shape that if I decide to run another 1/2 marathon it only takes me a couple of months to work up to the distance.

Have hit a plateau in my weight but that is okay. I will persevere. I am pretty close to my goal weight and I know the last time I lost all the weight it took me longer to lose the last 10 pounds that it did for the 75 before that. It can be frustrating but I have been here before.

Trip to Mexico & only gaining 3lbs, City Chase (24km in 6 hrs!) & being close to your goal weight :D Well done Cowboy!

I think it's a struggle for most of us Cowboy. It is also an achievement that we really earn, often the hard & tough way unfortunately. Maybe it makes us stronger? Anyhow, we are doing it & that's the main thing, xo

Truer words have never been spoken, Cate. I think all of us struggle with our demons. Like they say- nothing of worth comes easy. I think it does make us stronger not just physically but mentally as well. Helps us build up our character and resolve.

Well once again it has been a while since I have posted in my diary. I have been lurking and trying to catch up on some of your diaries. This Summer has been really busy for me. My son got married. Reception was at my brother in law's farm. So I have been busy sprucing the place up. Painting, cutting grass, cleaning. Wedding is over and I can get back to normal. Wedding was great though.

Weight has been good. I am back or very close to my lightest weight. My old skinny clothes fit now. I haven't been running as much as I would like but have been doing boot camp classes. It is nice to do something else besides running. Although I still love to run.

Starting next week, running starts again. Along with that two sessions of boot camp classes. So running 3 times a week and the two boot camp classes - I should be getting in some kind of shape-lol.

Funny but when I started my journey , my waist size was 42. Now it is 30. It has been very hard (especially gaining some and having to lose it again) but it has been worth it. I feel so much better. I just turned 55 last week and to be honest I am in the best shape I have ever been. Not bad for someone that has been fat his whole life. I am not sure why I waited until I was 50 to do this but it is what it is.

On another note, my wife has jumped on the bandwagon and she has lost 60 pounds. She looks wonderful ( she looked wonderful before) but she feels amazing which is more important.

Well that is it for now. Everyone keep fighting the fight. You can all do this!!

Wow, Cowboy! You are very active these days!
Like you, I have no idea why I took so long to decide to do something about my weight. I do think I used to hide behind my fat.
That is great that both you and your wife are able to enjoy feeling fit & healthy. I love that you say she looked wonderful before. She & I are both lucky. I look at photos of me 10 years ago & hardly recognise myself. I have been amazed that my husband has loved me through "thick & thin".
I will never allow myself to get fat again, so will certainly keep fighting the fight. I love being healthy & active :)

Thanks Cate. I have to stay active otherwise I fall into old habits. I also used to hide behind my fat. I used to be that jolly guy - smiling on the outside but miserable on the inside. Now I really am jolly inside and out-lol.

Love has nothing to do with what is on the outside- at least I don't think so. You love that person no matter what. My wife married me when I was fat and loved me regardless. I love her no matter what she looks like. I am a lucky guy and it sounds like you and your husband are lucky as well.
