Cowboy's Diary

It has been a long time since I have posted in my diary. A few years have gone by. Have I regained all my weight- NO-lol!! I did gain about 40 pounds but have just about lost it again. Not bad I guess for 4 years. I am still running and have run 3 - 1/2 marathons and multipe 10 and 5 Ks. I still love to run and it helps to keep the weight down.

I am not sure who is left from when I used to post on here regularly but if you recognize the name then please give me a shout out so we can reconnect.

That is it for today.

Welcome back !

Hi cowboy. My diary used to be in a different section of the forum when you were here last. I just read back a few pages of yours. There are a few in the forum now who just love to run- Quercus & Oaks are 2 of them. They often have a challenge happening. It sounds like you are doing well. Running seems to have been the answer for you. I used to love running when I was a teenager. It's a great adrenaline boost. Welcome back!

Welcome back, Cowboy.

Good luck on this leg of your journey.

Hi Chef,

Thank you. It has been hard work but worth it. It is nice that you and Jen are doing great. I remember way back when you started your journey together. Keep up the good work!!

Wanted to pop in and welcome you back. I look forward to hearing more about your running adventures! Do you have any goals you're working towards?

Thanks, Oaks. I actually am running a 10K race in April. I stopped running for a while so I am just building my distances back up again. I have run some 1/2 marathons but have always wanted to run a full marathon. Maybe not this year but I am not discounting it all together either. I also am entered into the City Chase. Not really a run although I think I am going to be doing a lot of running-lol - it is much like the Amazing Race. I am also thinking about a try-tri although my swimming sucks. I guess I am going to have to work on that too. So lots to keep me busy and hopefully keep the weight off.

Getting the endurance built up for a spring 10K sounds like a great plan. That experience will help you figure out the what's next somewhere along the way. It's great to have another runner around. I'm glad you're back!

The triathlons are fun experiences and having three sports to work through adds lots of opportunity to geek out. I did one that was close to a sprint distance but with a longer bike section and had a blast. If you do give it a shot make sure you get a couple training runs in where you practice running after being on a bike for a while. *takes a bit to get used to running with bike legs*

Thanks for the tips, KnowandDo. I hear talking to some triathletes to practice the transitioning as well. I know training will take some time but I think with the distance of a Try- Tri- I need to concentrate on mostly my swimming with biking coming next and then running. Although I love to run so I can't give that up totally-lol. My swimming is going to be the hardest part- I know that already.

It has been a good week for me. My weight is still going down. I am trying a low carb diet. It never worked for me before but my wife is on it so I wanted to support her, as well as lose some weight. The thing that concerned me was will this affect my running. I know you need carbs to burn for fuel for running but apparently you can get your body to burn fat instead. Wow- who knew-lol? I have been on it about a month now and it hasn't really hurt my running. Although I am not as strict as my wife with the diet - I definitely am losing weight. I think cutting out dessert is helping me though-lol. I have always lost weight before by limiting my calories, stopped eating all the junk, and exercising. Seemed to work and I didn't really have any problems. Not that I never cheated- just got back at it when I did. Never looking back just forward. So I guess I am basically doing the same thing - just stopped having a hamburger in a bun and put the hamburger patty in a lettuce leaf. It really doesn't taste much different and I don't feel bloated after.

I am still running 2 to 3 times per week. I have to go into training here right away as I have a 10K on April 24. Hills and speed work- here I come.

That is it for this week. I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

It's great that you are supporting your wife with her low carb diet. It must be very hard eating absolutely different meals. I don't know how people do that. I do a semi-fast 2 days a week & that is hard enough. I try to get G to eat more on those days than he does. He doesn't have to go out in sympathy & I don't see why we both should be hungry. It's nice that he is so supportive though.
You seem to have found a good balance with your "diet" & exercise cowboy.
Enjoy your weekend too. Cheers, Cate

Thanks Cate. Funny I have always been one of those people that can eat the same thing day after day, week after week, and not get tired of it. Unfortunately a few years ago it was cake and pies that I ate like that- hence the weight problem-haha. With this diet it is so weird- I can have Chicken Wings but not Carrots. I am still trying to wrap my head around it. Still doesn't make any sense to me. I can eat a huge spoonful of peanut butter but can't eat the cracker- so bizarre. It is working though so that is the REALLY weird part. I am so used to eating vegetables, fruit, different salads, cottage cheese, lean chicken and fish that for me to eat wings and peanut butter -- well, you know-lol?

I want to support my wife and do whatever helps her. If it means eating completely different then so be it. It is good that G supports you as well.

Well my running is going well. I have a 10K coming up in a couple of months and am ready for it. Hills and Speed work are coming up and I HATE running hills but it has got to be done. There is nothing like running up a 700m steep hill then running back down then back up again and doing this from 3 to 9 times. Makes me tired just thinking about it.

My eating has been good according to the ketonic diet my wife and I are on but it has been horrible to how I usually eat-lol. I find it hard to eat a salad with full fat ranch dressing and bacon or chicken wings on the side . It has been working though and I am about 20 pounds from my goal weight again. It feels good to be shrinking again. Starting to see some definition and my running is getting faster.

Well that is it for today. Hope everyone has a great weekend!!

Not allowing carrots on a diet seems counter intuitive but I wouldn't argue with whatever's working. Hills are tough, I hate them outside but I love them on a treadmill. I've never committed to a session of hill repeats, though, even though I keep saying I need to. They are speed work in disguise, you'll fly through that 10k!!
