Weight-Loss Coffee

Weight-Loss
I want my coffee fix! (Dieting query)

Hi, I'm new here so I hope I'm posting this query in the right forum. I've been on a shake diet for just over a month, and am only drinking green, herbal or Chinese teas, or water. It's going well and I feel great.

The past week or so, though, I've started craving coffee. Brewed or cafetierre, NOT instant. But I've been told by more than one person that drinking coffee can hinder diet plans and actually work against your efforts. I've also read online that some dieting/fitness experts say coffee contains anti-beta-blockers, and recommend giving up all caffeine while dieting, except as a very rare treat.

I should add that, dieting or not, I'm not a big coffee drinker. Several years ago I practically lived on the stuff, then I must have OD'd because suddenly I couldn't stand the sight or smell of it. I switched to herbal tea. Since then it's been a once-in-a-rare-while thing, or after dinner at a restaurant.

These cravings are getting really bad. Coffee-flavoured diet shakes don't alleviate them. Has anyone experienced this? (I think what I'm secretly hoping is, one of you will reply and say: Rubbish, drink as much coffee as you want!)

Thanks, everyone!

A while back I was under orders from a doctor to give up coffee - at the time I probably had a 4 -5 pot a day habit - doctor thought it might have a correlation to the migraines I was getting and the high blood pressure I had.... so for 6 months I went without - and the first week or so going thru the withdrawl was insane... headaches so bad I contemplated shaving my head because my hair hurt...

Once the withdrawl passed - I still missed it but did without... only no real change in migraine behavior or blood pressure - so the deal I cut with my doc was 2 cups of good coffee a day -I won't drink the swill served at Dunkin Donuts I like Lavazza or Intellegensia or Starbucks even... I like a good rich dark roast... and will enjoy it... and it hasn't effected my weight loss at all.

Just keep in mind - that coffee itself is fine - but it's the lattes and other frou frou drinks that pack inthe calories - even made with skim milk... so watch what you're putting in your coffee

I've been drinking coffee throughout my diet with no adverse effects- I have one or two cups in the am and one in the afternoon. As long as you count it it should be fine.

I believe the reason why that it's suggested to give up caffeine while dieting (for the record, I'm not on a diet, I'm on a lifestyle change and coffee is part of my lifestyle) is that coffee is a diuretic - as long as you are drinking enough water then it shouldnt matter.

I just read an article yesterday that coffee helps deter skin cancer (it was on MSN news.)

Go figure! One day it's bad for you and the next it's got a different side effect - but towards the good.

I don't know, I guess I'll keep drinking my coffee... until it kills me I guess. ;)

Some things I refuse to give up

Morning,

I firmly believe one of the key points in successful weight loss is to know what you are willing to give with no angst, what you might consider giving up....and what will never leave your household no matter what the circumstances.

For me, coffee is life, and life is coffee. I simply refuse to give it up. Even if I heard it makes losing weight more difficult, I'd say, okay, I can deal with that - the sacrifice of quick weight loss against no more blessed coffee isn't even a choice. :)

For the record, I generally drink two cups - usually one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I use coffee creamer or heavy cream (I'm basically a low-carb person) and Sweetleaf coffee sweetener as well.

People get between me and my morning coffee only if they're feeling reeeeeeeeeeal lucky..... :)

Data points,

Barbara

coffee actually has health benefits

I think the keyword regarding many things is in this world is moderation!!! That sure goes for drinking coffee as well. I often smile at the detox trend and those who believe that it is healthier to drink decaf coffee.

A growing body of scientific evidence actually show health benefits from drinking coffee. Of course 5 pots a day is a little over the top!!! But 2-3 cups a day have some health benefits. I was surprised to hear that maleficents MD ordered no coffee. It is well known that high blood pressure can cause more frequent headaches but headaches are different from migraine attacks. Many painkillers actually contain caffeine and I sometimes drink a cup of coffee if I have a slight headache (I have really bad migraine attacks too) and it helps. I also recognize the horrible headaches maleficent described when stopping drinking coffee:eek:

Here is an article about some of the health benefits of drinking a moderate amount of coffee:

Health Benefits of Coffee - WebMD

Studies show caffeine and coffee reduces the risk of Astma, Diabetes 2, Colon Cancer, headaches, cavaties, even decreases the risk of Parkinson's disease by 80 percent! Coffee also improves athletic perfomance:

It seems that coffee has health benefits in limited consumption, but in excess has some side effects. I sure like my coffee.

Would you like a glass of water or Coca-Cola?

Hi All! I found this article today, thought it was good info, source linked below.

Water

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated (likely applies to half the world's population).
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focussing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

Would you like a glass of water or Coca-Cola?

1. In many states in the USA, the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coca-Cola in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coca-Cola and it will be gone in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coca-Cola removes stains from vitreous china.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a crumpled up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, Remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its PH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.
2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate), the commercial trucks must use the "Hazardous Material" place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of Coca-Cola have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years! Now the question is, would you like a glass of water or Coca-Cola?

most of the cola ones have been debunked by the good people at snopes -that info has been posted at least 5 times onthis forum already...

Even without the debunking on snopes, the acid in your stomach will take care of anything! Unless of course you decide to drink battery acid or something like that.

But for the most part I understand the post - water is way better for you! But for me one diet pepsi per day isn't going to kill me. ;)

Very good post. I am very addicted to coke or Pepsi, if I don't drink for one day my head hurts, and sometimes I drink alot of it.
Thanks

Water and tea

Wow, I just misspelled "water" in the title. I'm a freaking genius.

ANYWAY.

For my body weight, I try to drink around 100 ounces of water every day, but I drink a LOT of green tea as well. Should I be drinking the 100 ounces of water in addition to the tea, or since tea is mainly herbs with water... would that count as water?

Green tea or any tea absolutely counts for water content. Green tea has the added benfits of being a detoxifying agent and is MUCH heathier than almost any and every other form of water out there, other than staright water of course.

sirant

I count tea as water when I'm watching what I drink because it's really just water with infused herbs in it, but your green tea sounds much more healthy than mine. I'm a sweet iced tea girl myself. I should switch over... :D

That's what I thought. Sweeeeeeeeet. Thanks, guys!

Sweet iced tea is sooo good, so is raspberry iced tea, iced tea, and all other sorts of tea. I think I need to go to a tea-anonymous meeting :(

there are a few companies, like Torani, that make sugar free syrups in hazel nut, raspberry, vanilla and a few other flavors... I've even seen them sold in Marhsalls and TJ Maxx - you can add the sugar free syrups to tea and voila you've got flavored tea at no calories.

I'm from alabama, A fridge with out iced tea is a sad fridge.

i also love green tea too. :)

I use sweet n' low to sweeten my iced tea.
