Cate's Diary

Thanks, Marsia. Putting bells on the dogs might just be a good idea. I have an idea that snakes react to movement in the ground rather than sounds though. I'll look it up. Apparently, neither makes much difference. I'll keep being very careful & I think I'll carry a little tin with doggy treats so that he'll come back to me straight away if I rattle it. I have been using my shortest lead.
R is heading south today & we are meeting K9 about a 1.75 hr drive from here. I'll let him drive again to get some practice. He's keen.

Great to hear that R is enjoying the driving.

Archie is adorable! :beating:

I'm glad too, Em. He simply needs this licence & has to stick with it this time.
Arch is adorable. He is currently squeezed between the arm of my chair & my laptop. It can't be comfortable!

Hope the drive went well, and really good R is getting his license. He'll be so happy with all the freedom once he has it. I hope your snake got scared off and is long gone. That makes sense that snakes would feel you coming, as they are laying on the ground most of the time. So sweet how much Archie has bonded with you! Sounds like you got the perfect dog!!

Glad Archie is doing good and sounds like your son is making progress . Our dog who is big squeezes herself into the most uncomfortable tight spaces to be close to her boss . Lol . You got to love them

There are so many snakes about this year apparently. I’ll keep Archie on a short lease & keep an eye on him when he’s outside in the yard. I don’t think I could possibly have got a better dog. I would hate to lose him!

They’re good for us, Petal. I don’t think I can have too much love :beating:

Thanks, Petal. I did. I had a lovely weekend. Took G to golf & went back & picked him up in the afternoon. Took Archie for a lovely walk around the river. It was very sociable. Yesterday we didn't do a lot as it was quite hot & today will be hotter again. We were thinking of going into town but decided against it. Cities in the heat are not my idea of fun.
There have been lots of snake sightings this year & I have felt a bit restricted with Archie's walks. It's the mating season now & they are particularly active. I may have to take him into our local town a bit more often I think.
R has a push mower in one of his cabins & I may try mowing a path with it.

Our local city is only a mini city really, but asphalt & heat don’t go well together. No stench usually, thank goodness, LaMa.
I had noticed a new bump on Archie yesterday & investigated more today when I thought it may be a tick. I got G to have a look & he agreed. We got it out intact, after killing it first with Metho & then pulling it out ant-clockwise. *sigh*....living in the bush....joyful, but also dangerous.

Our dogs used to get a lot of ticks before we got a better fence and they were no longer able to get out into the neighboring fields. Poor things.

Arch got his while on a short lead with me! I’m trying not to freak out about them, but will check him carefully every day.

Around here a single tick usually isn't a big deal. Is the infection rate for tick-born diseases high in Tasmania? Having been vaccinated for tbe I really only need to worry about borreliosis. (Which is bad enough if you do get it, of course.)

I don't think the infection rate is very high here, LaMa. I decided to give him half of a dose of the tick medicine, which is a chew, & disguised it in his next feed. There were 3 pieces all up & guess what was left in his bowl when he had finished his meal? I was going to give him the other half in a few days, after keeping an eye out for any side effects. I put them back in the box & am still undecided on whether to try again.
