Cohen's Lifestyle Anyone from the United States?

Prefix for Cohen's Lifestyle
600 calories?? That's incredibly little, and I wonder if it's even healthy. No wonder people left and right are losing weight like crazy. But when you do the refeed, you must start taking in more calories, right? Doesn't that mean that your weight goes up again?

Thanks all for info re calories. The ultra low calorie aspect concerns me because what happens after you finish the diet? Losing the weight (one half of the struggle) seems to be the easy part of this plan. Are you stuck eating a little more than 600 calories a day forever to maintain weight?

Is there anybody on the board who is beyond the refeed period who can comment how their bodies and appetites have responded during maintenance?

I apologize for the flurry of questions and any perceived negativity. The program seems to be doing wonders for most and I applaud everyone's hard work. I stopped dieting a few years ago because I was tired of the related weight yoyoing, binging behavior and food obsession. It was a good thing. Still I have a little bit of weight I'd like to get off since I've been a bit sloppy with food choices for awhile and I have the medical condition for which I believe this diet was originally created (PCOS). I'm just worried that if I go back to a diet, the deprivation will cause my body to become a fat magnet like diets past.

In respect to all your concerns re: calories

For those concerned about the calories, don't be!!!!

That is only what one person said, I'm not 100% positive on this and I don't want you to get discouraged by the numbers. I really don't count calories. All I know is that this "diet works" and I'm seriously not hungry and I'm exercising to boot. I know when it's time for me to eat because it never fails, 1 hour before I'm to eat, I will be hungry. No problem, this is when I start preparing my meal, or just do something to get my mind off of eating. I usually come on this board and read everyone's comments and before I know it an hour in a half has gone by.

I have done lots and lots of research on this diet and have even looked at people comments and so forth after cohens. There's a thread on this site where people post during and after refeed. From all my readings, people still manage to lose weight while doing refeed. I've actually looked at the refeed program and it's very intense and you really need to follow it 200%. I've heard people say how hard it was to eat the increased portions and yet were amazed that they kept losing weight.

Please don't forget this diet corrects the way your body processes food. If you look at the program there's a whole section on your Human Growth Hormone and what it does in respect to this diet. There are guidelines for when you finish the program in respect to what to do if you are going to have alcohol etc.

Please please don't look at calorie count-this is not what this diet is all about. For all you Oprah fans out there, if you remember when Oprahs fitness instructor was on (Mark Green) everything he talked about in terms of portion size and food choices parallelled to Cohen's lifestyle. I don't know about you guys, but I don't want to go through life worring about calorie count. We all have to be accountable for what we put in our mouths, and for me if I'm eating a high carb diet 3 times a day, I know I'll be gaining weight. It's all balance and when to eat those carbs. After Cohens, it is suggested that we don't eat cereal or toast (carb breakfast) as it triggers hunger soon after, instead to have a protein based breakfast-cheese, yogourt or an egg with some veggies(exception yogourt).

Last year, I did a diet similar to L.A weightloss(Beverly Hills Diet) and I cooked my own food but had to buy their protein supplements. I lost weight on it but I never reached my 30lb weight loss. Only lost 22lbs and it took me 4 months to lose that, and it's been 8.5 weeks on Cohen and I'm down 26lbs already. There was too much flexibility not to mention the expense of buying their products and also, I knew I wouldn't eat like that for the rest of my life. Needless to say I gained all the weight back minus 2lbs. This "diet" is different and I can't say enough about it. I feel different and I'm losing fat, not muscle. Think of this as Cohens College-a teaching tool to a better healthier life.

 , but I really just want to answer all your concerns and I hope I have clarified some of your questions. I encourage anyone to just sit in front of the computer and just read about people on this diet--I hate calling it a diet by the way.

Joanne

Thanks Joanne. I am by no means a calorie counter. I've not dieted for years. My concern is with how little food there is and how restrictive one must be with portions once the diet is over and one assimilates back into the real (and sometimes scary) world of eating. I'll continue to do my research.

Hello every one, I am amaze at the speed that this process has taken. I recieved my referal 2day and will be taking my blood test 2moro. Perhaps I will begin my new "life style" by Wenesday. (Yummy2B, I'm trying not to use the word 'Diet'.) :). What kind of crackers do you use? Regular saltines, or Crips Bread?

Xplorer2000,

I eat Regular Saltines. When you receive your diet it will have a link regarding crackers. My "plan" states I'm allowed 6 crackers, but since I eat Saltines, I'm allowed 12, as every 2 Saltine crackers equals 1 cracker on the plan. The max of Saltines, if you choose them, to eat at a time are 4, you can't save them until the end of the day and eat 6 or 12 of them.

I've never seen the Crisp Bread so I can't comment on those.

qwerty, I have always been a 'hearty' eater. The portion size of the meals does seem small to begin with, but as your body adjusts to the meal size and gets into the 'fat-burning' mode, you find the size more than satisfies. there are some on the program who do experience hunger but in the 32 weeks of the plan I was only hungry once or twice maybe. I didn't exercise and I work full-time. I am 45 yrs old with 2 teenagers. I had more than enough energy to function and have never felt so good.

Today is day 6 of refeed for me and the food amount that is prescribed during refeed increases gradually over the refeed period. As of today, I have increased my protein and veg amounts by 60gm and 80gm respevtively. i have doubled my fruit from 2 pieces per day to 4, and this has added new varieties to my allowance as well. I am now eating a slice of bread and this increases to 2 slices tomorrow. So far I have lost 300gm since I started refeed. The amount increases are gradual and more than enough. the body is going through retraining, not only learning to cope with more food but processed foods as well. I have also started exercising, a combo of pilates, tai chi and yoga. It is another step on the journey to loving me and looking after myself. I am now wearing size 8-10 clothes, down from size 22-24 and
have lost just under the 47kg ( 103.4lb) in under 33 weeks.

2 "post-Cohen's" members to keep an eye out for are chelsea and Less of me. Both ladies completed the plan last year and have maintained their weight loss as well as eating 'normally'. There are maintainance guidlines to follow once refeed is complete, but as far as I'm aware they are basic commom-sense with a few tips on enjoying oneself as well. Here in Australia we are lucky to have clinics to attend as well as personal contact with our consultants. At my clinic, each of the consultants, as well as the owner, have been on the plan and been successful, their photos are displayed on the wall to prove it. They have also maitained their loss. That in itself, reassures me that I will not have any problems once faced with the real world again............providing I maintain a healthy diet and if I do have take-away or the odd snack, I balance that out with a healthy non snacky couple of days. I've done it for 8 months now, what's a couple of days every now and then. :) .

I hope I have reassured you re the portion size and the process of re-introducing a 'normal' diet. Dr Cohen has been having success with his program for 25 yrs and there are girls on this forum who also suffer from PCOS. they have been having amazing success with it, for some the only weight loss success ever.

Good luck with your decision, which ever way you decide. This is something I wouldn't have missed for the world.

Crackers

Hello every one, I am amaze at the speed that this process has taken. I recieved my referal 2day and will be taking my blood test 2moro. Perhaps I will begin my new "life style" by Wenesday. (Yummy2B, I'm trying not to use the word 'Diet'.) :). What kind of crackers do you use? Regular saltines, or Crips Bread?

Hi xplorer2000.
I love my crackers. I've used the Cohens guidlines for crackers, and I absolutely, LOOOOOVE " Finn Crisp Original Rye Crackers." They are round crackers and I just break off a small piece to equal 11gms (2cracker allowance per snack or meal) They are similar to the Ryvita Dark Rye crackers (my second favorite),but soooo much tastier and crunchy. It's like eating a piece of toast. It's great under my poached egg in the morning. I use a knife and fork and have my poached egg on top of my cracker with a side of spinach or tomato and cucumber.

Sometimes for variety I'll have saltines (found an Italian brand that's whole wheat and oh so good, but can only have 3 of those instead of 4-they are toasted to perfection and not really salty) I find the saltines don't satisfy me, but the finn crisp rye crackers are so filling- I encourage you to hunt them down and give them a try. You can find them in the ethnic section of crackers. They are made in Sweden. If you guys have an A&P/Dominion, big name grocery store you shouldn't have a problem finding them. Sometimes there are in the ethnic section and other stores carry them with the Wasa/Ryvita crackers(usually in the commercial bread section)

Good luck finding them.

Lauren,

Thanks so much for your very thoughtful and lengthy response. Congratulations on your personal success and your confidence in making this lifestyle work for you post program. I'm slowly coming around thanks to your and others' comments on this board. Thanks so much to you all for the support. I have a few weeks to mull over my decision since I would only get my bloodwork done in Atlanta where I will be visiting friends soon. More convenient doing it there than in NJ where I currently live. Thanks again.

Top of the day to all! I was not able to get the blood work done today because I had tea in the morning after fasting for 8hrs. I surely will get it done on Monday. I am curious to know what brand of Yogurt do most of you Coheners use?

Hi everyone!

I'm a newbie. Just joined and am amazed at everyone's progess on Dr Cohen's Diet! Congratulations!

I'm a 37 yr old mother of 2 who wants to lose 70lbs. I heard about this diet from a TVG interview with Leigh Remini and I started researching it online. At first, it seemed too good to be true, but after finding this thread and reading all the success stories, I am anxious to give it a go.

I just have a few questions if anyone doesn't mind responding.

I plan on using one of the labs that Dr Cohen's is affiliated with and I was wondering if the price of the blood test was still $35.00 (in the US) as stated on Dr C's official website.

I know the basic diet is 12 weeks and then you go into the re-feed. Does anyone know how long the re-feed takes?

Finally, I've been on every diet under the sun and I always get frustrated when I plateau in my weight loss. Does this happen a lot with Cohen's and if so, is there a way get passed it? I don't want to become so disappointed that I'll stop the diet. (On other diets when I'd leveled off in my weight loss, I felt that I either had to starve myself or excercise more to lose the weight. This only left me feeling depressed, frustrated, hopeless and sadly, off the diet).

I've been on so many diets and I always lose a certain amount and then eventually gain it all back and then some. I've just lost 15 lbs on my own with diet and excercise, but it took me over 6 weeks and I felt that I should have lost more. This is why Cohen's is so appealing to me because it seems like you can lose more in a shorter period of time, yet without much excercise.

Everyone's posts are such an inspiration to me as I finally, after dieting most of my adult life, feel that this may be a realistic chance to get all this weight off, once and for all. I'm just hoping that it truly happens and that Dr Cohen's is the answer for me.

Thanks,
Christine

Hi Christine!
I just want to say I absolutely LOVE this diet! I used to be the biggest gym junkie after my first pregnancy and managed to lose my weight and more after on my own. 7 years later after my second was born, I had a hard time losing the weight and was at my heaviest I ever was in my life at 162pounds at only 5 feet tall. I still had a figure b/c I tend to gain weight evenly throughout my body. I tried Beverly Hills diet last year (similar to LA weightloss) and lost some weight (22lbs) but gained it back in less than a year. I am totally amazed at how wonderful this diet is and how fast it works. I know everyone is cautious to believe this beause we've always been told "if it's too good too be true" than it is--IT's only a quick fix, but this diet is different. I feel different and I'm melting fat not muscle. My muscles from my days at the gym are reappearing under the fat loss. I'm becoming the old me again. It's funny-from everyone telling me I can tell you what to do-just dut out your carbs and do this and do that, now I have everyone calling me asking me-"What's the website for that diet you're doing". My husband is on it, and my sister-in-law is doing it. The first week is the hardest and I find the weekends a bit hard also, but it's working and I'm not looking back.
Do some research and go to all the links when you google Dr. Cohen in respect ot HGH (human growth hormone) etc, but what convinced me the most that this really does work is all the wonderful people on this board and also check out and read the board from e-diets. The threads are closed now but just google 1st personal diet and you'll see the link to the site. All those on the e -diet forum were from the U.S. and that is what finally convinced me to sign on. Remember you need to do this fo yourself and when you make that committment it's not as hard to do when you can visualize yourself the way you want to be.
Sorry for th long note and if I've repeated myself

Thanks so much for responding yummymummytobe!

I am also 5', gain weight evenly and I'm at 170 lbs. (My heaviest (unpregnant) was at 185, so I'm down 15 lbs but still have a long way to go.) I'd like to get down to what I was before I got married, which was about 100-105 lbs. I wish I could blame it on baby fat, but I lost that weight (I have a 2yr old daughter and a soon to b 8yr old son). It's just the weight that's crept up on me year after year.

I did find success with the Atkins diet, but I feel I need more structure and boundaries which Cohens seems to provide. I am a strong believer that cutting carbs is the way to go. I just worry that if you eat the same amount of calories every day, won't your body get used to that and then you start to plateau? It's happened to me several times before.

I did read the boards on e-diets and was upset that it closed down until I researched more and found this one. I didn't know about the HGH, so I will google that to discover more about it. Thanks for that info!

I am so ready to make the commitment to myself to lose weight! I've found that you really have to be mentally ready to do a diet otherwise it won't work.

Your post got me all excited and it's just the reassurance I need to know that this diet works. It's great to have this thread for support. And don't ever feel you've written too much. The more positive words I read, the more pumped up I get!

Plateau

Hi Christine,
I've been on this diet for 9 weeks now. I lost 11lbs the first week and have been pretty steady with a 2 pound weight loss a week. I haven't plateaued yet and I expect if I do it might be at 120lbs. I can't see myself at 110-116lbs Cohens wants me. If I can reach 118-120lbs I'll be so very happy just because I'm very muscular and I want to continue lifting weights after Cohens.(remember muscle weighs more than fat.)
Check out the Cohens lifestlye thread on this board-the majority are from Australia, and are a great help too should you have any questions we can't answer. They have consultants they talk to so they can get specific questions answered.
Good luck with whatever decision you choose. As you mentioned I think the reason this diet works for everyone is that you are told exactly the amount (portions) you are to eat. I love the structure and if it was a flexible diet like Aitkens or the like than I know I would be eating a huge piece of rib eye steak with roasted red peppers and a big salad.
Ciao for know and talk to you soon
Joanne

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to post for those of you who may have also visited the other board where we are predominately from the US, that there is a new site:

Two members did a new board to perserve messages that were getting lost in the original.

Hope to see you all there, too!

A little craziness about me!

Hey everyone,
I found the new board yesterday. I have already registered.
This is Day 3 for me and I am down 3 pounds so for...... 78.5 more to go... .but who's counting! hehe!
Love hearing everyones previous diet history, makes me feel like I am not the only one out there that has tried everything on the face of the earth to loose weight. I have been on diets since I was about 10 and have cheated on them from the beginning.... I am going to change my spots this time!!!! NO MORE CHEATING!:D
Does anyone ever have reverse anorexia? What I mean is that Anorexia people see themselves at fat.... when they look in the mirror - I am opposite. I see myself as smaller... not as big as when I see myself in pictures. So my perception of myself is different than what people see me as... mybe that was my way of telling myself I was fine and I didn't need to loose wieght... Yeh Right! :pwell I am taking a few more pictures of myself and seeing what I look like... and I don't like it.... that image of being smaller is gone! I might be the only one out there like this, but that's fine....... That image I have of myself will be the one I see in a couple of months!

Happy Losing

I got my plan and will start on Monday. It doesn't seem that little to eat, but I will report back sometime next week and let you know how things are going. For now, I'm drinking champagne and have just ordered pizza--one last time...

Easyelvis,

Enjoy your champagne and pizza and please have a slice for me!!! I miss it so much and can't wait to have it again!

Hey everyone,
I just found this board (I have been using the main Cohen's thread) nice to hear from others in the US. Now I will know the slang and not have to wonder what certain things are!
Easyelvis, I did the same thing...ate my favote foods the weekend before I started.
Lonniecee, you are my hero:D
Qwerty, I have't been hungry yet and after a few days it's easy breazy to come up with the combo's that fill you up.
Christine, glad your here.

Lonniesee, can you give us an idea about the weight loss cycles you went through?
Thanks

Hey Lam,

Welcome to the Boards!!! I'm from Massachusetts, too, and have been on the plan for almost 15 weeks. It's great!

There is another board that you might want to check out. The majority of us are from the US and use it in addition to this one!
