What's the difference between broken hominy and normal, canned hominy? Or are they interchangeable?

Good question. I would say to use any kind of hominy you can find..lol

Wulsk--I would be surprised if you couldn't find hominy and black eyed peas in Liverpool. Those are common ingrediants in African and Southern food in the U.S. :) However, if you've already done a roadblock--which I believe you have, shove it off onto a teammate who hasn't. :D

Aww I am not from Liverpool. I am from Southend-on-Sea. I have today discovered black eyed beans (not peas). Is it possible that it is the same thing? No traces from hominy yet. Do the so called "sugar beans" have other name? There are plenty of beans but no sugar ones! I really want to try Nelson Mandela's meal. Booooo hooooo.....:banghead:

Wulsk (Yu)-yes where I am from they are considered the same black eye peas/beans I was pretty sure they were the same! Of course pending final decision from you know who LOL.

I read through that original list and for some reason sugar snap peas came into my head but now that you mention I am not familiar with sugar beans either, here is what I found on net but I didnt see another name for them.

also since I am making my list for tomorrow is it lemons, as in whole chopped pieces lemons we are adding or as in lemon juice?

Black eyed beans are the same as b.e. peas. Sugar beans are aka lima beans. I thought they were like green beans, but I was wrong.

Hominy shouldn't be too hard to find--I found mine easily at the supermarket today. It was in the canned vegetable section. They kind of look like chick peas (garbanzo beans). I also found some in the Mexican food aisle. There were two different kinds of hominy--white and yellow. If you come upon this, choose whichever you want. I'm not going to be a stickler about it. :)

Real lemons lemon juice--whichever. You don't even have to use actual chili peppers unless you want to. A dash of chili powder will suffice.

There is always a roadblock or a detour. This week there is a roadblock. Basically that means that only one team member has to do the special task.

Week 6—Seoul to Johannesburg 18hrs 35min. 6hrs12min split 3 ways

Roadblock: make and eat Nelson Mandela’s favorite South African dish—umngqusho. Don’t even try to pronounce it. :D The recipe is below. Only one person per team needs to do this--and remember--if you've already done 2 roadblocks, someone else from your team must do it. :)

Umngqusho—South African dish—Nelson Mandela’s fav
What you need
• 2 cups dry samp (broken hominy)
• 1 cup dry cowpeas (black-eyed peas) or any similar beans

What you do
• Combine samp and cowpeas in a large enamel pot or glass bowl. Add cold water sufficient to cover. Cover, and let stand overnight. Drain and rinse before cooking.
• In a large pot. Cover the soaked samp and cowpeas mixture with cold water. Bring to a boil. Let boil for ten minutes. Reduce heat. Add sugar beans, margarine, onions, potatoes, chillis and lemons. Simmer on low heat for one to two hours, until all is tender and the water is mostly absorbed. Add additional water during cooking if needed.
• Season with salt. Serve hot.

You must eat the whole thing by yourself. With the ingrediants other than the black-eyed peas and hominy, you can add as much or as few as you like--for example, if you don't care for spicy food, just add a tiny bit of chilis. Any questions? Just ask. :D

It doesn't have to be over, Sweatpea--there's still the 2nd chance. :)

I made my umngqusho tonight. It's not that bad. My H loves it (I made enough for him as well). I put a whole lemon in it--minus the peel. He is going to want me to make again--he can't stop telling me how good it is. Who would've guessed? :smilielol5:

I'm eating for dinner tonight, and will have it for lunch for a few days as well--there's quite a bit of it.

If any of you are vegetarians, this is a great roadblock for you to do. Mine's actually vegan b/c I used a soy-based margarine. ;)

I am sorry to be pain in the bum with my questions. I just want to be sure I am doing the things right. I have got the hominy and the black eyed beans now. I have problems with the sugar beans. I couldn't find lima beans in any shop. I have checked in wikipedia that lima beans are also called butter beans or sieva beans. The sieva beans are green while the butter beans are big, fat white ones. There is no sieva beans here. There are butter beans though.

On top of this, today in the ethnic food shop they sold me some beans called rosecoco beans which I was told the Zimbabwean people call sugar beans. They are kind of spotty.

Please people, tell me how do your beans look like!

And last question, what colour the chillis must be - green or red?

Sorry, Kim. :banghead:

:bigear:

Yu-lima beans are rather light green and larger while what I call butter beans are very large and white as you described. As for the chilis Kim said you could just use chili powder if you want so I am sure she doesnt care what sort chilis you use. Hope that helps. Dont stress out over this! I can do it still LOL

Do we do the 2nd chance as a whole team? If so, looks like I won't be able to "compete". But I will keep up my own challenge of 60 min. of exercise per day.

What do you mean you can't compete? Are the rest of your teammates not interested? If so, I can put you in with the determinied divas--as they are short a person.

Yuliana--chili color doesn't matter. I'm sure those Zimbabwean sugar beans are closest to what they use in S. Africa. But don't break the bank buying expensive ingrediants. :)

OK, I have now official confirmation that my beans are the right ones! No duspute can occur! :sifone: They are not green though - they are spotty beans!

I am very annoyed that there is no uniform clasification of the beans and their names! :)

I gonna soak the stuff now!

Yes, I think I'm the only one left that's interested. I would be happy to join the Determined Divas. :)

Go ahead and continue to update your stats as they are in the ABS of Steel thread, but feel free to post over in the DD's thread, as you are now an official member. In fact, you can add your exercise to theirs for this week.

Week 7 Detours

Week 7—Johannesburg to Pamplona 19hrs 26min. 6hrs 29min split 3 ways.

Detour: 1.Take a Spanish siesta, or afternoon nap. This detour option requires you to spend 30min resting during your normal waking hours. You must do this 5 days during the week, and the 30min must be uninterrupted—no phones, TV, computer or getting up from your place of rest. You don't have to actually sleep, just rest with your eyes closed. Studies show that people who are well-rested are more productive, live longer, and it’s also more conducive to weight loss. Your "siesta" would ideally be done between the hours of noon and 4pm, but as I know many of you have day jobs that make that impossible, just make sure you do it at some point during the day/evening--but don't set your alarm a half hour early and then snooze for another 30 minutes. That would be cheating. The point is to ADD rest to your day. :)

Or 2. Run with the bulls of Pamplona. The running of the bulls course is approx ½ mile long. During the week, run a half mile (804m) without stopping or else you’ll be gored by a bull...hahaha. :smilielol5: You only need to do this once, and you must run the 1/2 mile in 5 minutes or less.

Wow, a nap, really? This isn't a mean joke where suddenly you'll say this is not really our task, is it? Beacause I am THRILLED with the idea of a nap!

I'm serious--no mean joke!! :D I figured I'd get people saying between work and family they had no time for napping and I was mean and horrible for making them nap..lol.

GREAT DETOUR! I do have a question though...can we split the 30 min in half and take two 15 min power naps?
