Your thoughts on rep

What to do about rep?

Yeah, understand how it happened. I'm just saying that's what I disagreed with. It's much more weighted on how long you've been a member...the easiest rep of all (plus you can just look at the join date if you want to know that)..... but it looks like I'm being outvoted anyway so I guess the point is moot.

I dont like the spacing on the posts. Instead of every 300 posts, it should remain at 100 posts for 1 rep point--since its going to be Length of time as a member and Post driven.

If the decision is going to be to stay where we are currently (and maybe adding in a "thank you" system, as TM liked that idea, but I dont know how the other mods and members feel about it), then the length of being a member should have a just a tad higher value in points as compared to the norm.

As an example:

Every 100 posts= 1

Every 1,000 posts= 2

Length of time being a member (an ever increasing value for each year): For example, 1 year = 2, 2 years= 3, 3 years= 4, with an ending cap limit of points after 5 years)

With time "during the year" still being set at 180, for one point.

And, one could work in the other variables, pretty simply.

Edit: I changed some of the wording and values, to better serve as an example.

I havent voted yet, because the current system can work, but it needs some revision. But, presently I do not like it.

The "thank you" number would list the number of times (accumulatively) the forum member received a "thank you" from another member appreciating the content of the post, and this can be per post. Hopefully, just like the rep system, one can add in a comment line, and go to the user CP and see who gave them the thank you, and read the comment.

Best regards,

Chillen

I think the membership of the member should have a larger impact than post-count.

I think at this point I've been pulled to the side of those who wish you could just disable your rep all together. It doesn't really mean anything anymore

I'm beginning to wonder about that as well.

A member's join date and post count is already on display, so I'm not sure how a rep count based in part on one's number of posts / tenure on the site adds anything of significance - i.e that another member may find somehow relevant.

Also, as you alluded to, perhaps having the option to opt out and " disable " your rep would be something worthy of consideration.

yeah, I was going to say if anything should have been changed it's that rep power should be based solely on rep you get from other members. Who cares how long you've been here or how many posts you make?

I'd be happy just to disable I guess

If its based solely on rep form other members, we all would have about 10 points. Why? Because everyone is so caught up in the rep system and how its value is so great that noone reps anyone.

Like Chillen mentioned, over at WLF they have hundreds of thousands of rep power, they are repping each other like crazy over there. Not saying its not for good reason. However here, noone reps anyone.

Why shouldnt semeone who has been here awhile receive more rep then someone who received a lot of rep? They've put in the time and actually stuck around. Anyone who has been a long time member and doesnt post, doesnt get noticed anyways.

I actually never even considered these things when I changed it. Rep is supposed to be a little fun item that was added to the forum. When we had larger reps, people wanted to get rid of it. Now that its changed, people want to get rid of it.

I believe its the best "interest" of the forum to keep it. This is just my opinion on the "overall" feeling on the board in general. And, the posts I have made were just trying to put out some input to think about.

If the decision is to keep it, then lets work on a "common ground" of rep point rules and then implement them. Is it possible to get this thread headed in a constructive fashion geared toward coming to a final conclusion on the point rules?

After some members make suggestions on the point rules and guidelines, can an admin, then make a finalized rule spread, and then implement it, so we can move on?

I like the "Thank you" idea too. Alot of people on our forum who take the time to write quality posts, like to hear a thank you once in a while, and the system can have value to the "majority" IMO.

Those that done want to use it, have theirs disabled, its as simple as that.

Best wishes,

Chillen

As do I, but I didnt really seen anyones point totals moving. How much is all the time?

You serious man? People's total reps were starting to go really high. Only 2-3 months ago 300 was the highest, and now all of a sudden everyone was in the 300-400 range and chillen was hitting 700 almost wasn't he. People were repping like crazy.
