Weight-Loss Which protein shake to use?

Protein Shake b4 cardio??

So my friend told me that if I take protein before I do cardio, then it will burn more calories/fat than not taking anything. He said if your body already has that much protein, it will just start to burn fat. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about that. By the way, I usually take my whey protein shake and then go lift weights and then do around 30 minutes of cardio afterwards. Any input is appreciated~!

I'm no fitness instructor, but I only drink water before any cardio, and then save the protein for afterwards - to replenish what I lost. Just my 2 cents. ;)

That's not true. The body can store protein as fat, just as it can carbs and fats.
Before cardio it's best to have a serving of carbs (small serving of course), with a little bit of fat and protein if you like. Think of it this way: carbs are our primary fuel, just like gas for the car. You wouldn't try tricking your car by not fueling it. Fuel yourself before your workout and you will have a much more successful workout and you'll be able to work harder. And, you will still burn fat.

Protein bars, upset stomach?

I had a protein bar this afternoon and was hit with a KILLER stomachache! I don't know how to describe the kind of pain I was in, but it was almost like... the feeling when food is sitting in your stomach and fermenting.

Has anyone had a similar problem? It was a Zone Perfect bar, chocolate raspberry flavour. If anyone could offer some insight I'd sure appreciate it!!

THANKS!

Probably just has something in it your body doesn't tolerate too well, or maybe you're mildly allergic to an ingredient. I'd just avoid that one and try a different bar.

I'm gonna try again...

I bought 5 protein bars at 2.50 each because they're so handy for me to take with me to work/school/etc... so I'm going to try eating another one. I wonder if I just didn't have enough water with it? I had some protein powder in yogurt with some berries one day and had an upset stomach too...

Ah, the joys of nutrition.

I would look at energy-4-health.biz as they offer tasteless whey protein powder, which you can mix with anything from Gravy to soup, to help build up your lean muscle mass.

Returning to the original question, I would question why someone would feel that they need to change their protein/carb ratio this way? Carbs are necessary for exercise. Whats wrong with carbs? Athletes often take carb supplements in order to replenish energy and blood-sugar levels - especially if working out for periods in excess of one hour. Carbs are the preferred energy fuel of the body, nothing wrong with carbs - its about understanding when you should take low GI carbs, and when that you should use higher GI carbs. Protein shakes are designed (or at least marketed) for strength trainers, to aid muscle growth, not to 'rebalance' protein/carb ratios.

High Protein/Low Carb diets

There are some diets that are high protein, low carb. I am a Type 2 Diabetic and I have to watch my carbs. When I started losing weight, I started using a protein ice cream drink that had a bunch of other stuff in it to assist in digestion. There are certain proteins that will assist the body in utilizing the body's fat. After, I started losing weight, I got my blood sugar down from 250 to less than 120 in 24 days.

For those of us that still have some spare tires around the mid-section, we have all the carbs the body needs (for the most part). When we need energy (glucose), the body will pull it from the fat reserves.

My $.02.

I have an chocolate shake for breakfast every morning. Not sure how the Vanilla one is, but the chocolate is delish. I am not a bodybuilder, but they can use this shake. It is just an overall healthy shake that can be used for bodybuilders or weight loss or whatever. I am a 30 year old woman and with 125 lbs and I use it as a healthy start to my day.

Hope this helps!

Protein Shakes

Everyday after I work out, I drop by the smoothie place to get a protein shake, and it's getting really really expensive (they're like five dollars each!). So the last time I was in there, after I ordered, the guy behind me said he'd give me a protein shake rather suggestively. This got me thinking, does anyone know the nutritional properties of human semen? Because instead of paying five dollars everyday for a protein shake, I could make five dollars and get a free one out of the deal.

10-15 calories and 6mg of protein per "event"

let us know how it works out for you...you're going to need a lot! pictures if at all possible of course

Protein Supplements

Okay, I mentioned this in my diary, but I wanted to post it on here so that more people would see it! I live on campus at Purdue. I don't get much protein here, because the choices in the dining halls are not that great! Anyhow, I really want to cut back on carbs and add more protein to my diet, nothing restrictive (like no carbs whatsoever), but just something to aid in weight loss/muscle growth. Have any of you tried protein supplements? What do you suggest? Also, do you think this is a good idea?

I have just finished a big tub of 'Instant Whey Protein'. I was taking two to four scoops per day - two with my porridge at breakfast, and two in a water based shake after strength training workouts. It is rather expensive, and with Christmas around the corner, I can't really afford to buy a new one.

Was it worth it? I don't really know. Like all supplements (its the only dietary supplement that I have used), there is an element of psychology going on. Whey is a protein-rich dairy product. The usual advice for strength training nutrition is to consume extra protein, and to consume protein throughout the day, usually along with carbs. However, health professionals do warn us (I don't have a link, try searching for it), that too much protein can be harmful.

I'm sure that you already know this, but good proteins can be found in chicken white meat, turkey white meat, tuna, eggs, salmon, white fish, lean red meats, dairy products (cottage cheese is a particularly good source - just make sure that its made from skimmed/reduced fat milk), beans, pulses, nuts, and seeds.

I say go for it. I cannot speak for you and your body size, but I have an protein shake for breakfast every morning. It is quick and easy and I doubt I could make anything as healthful in twice the time. It is a good energizing start to my day.

I am 5/ 3", weigh 126 pounds, and have an athletic build. I would not worry about bulking up by having a protein shake say for breakfast. A lot of those bodybuilders drink like 4 or more a day and work out for hours.

Not all shakes are great for your, find a good one that is natural and does not have a bunch of crap in it. My massage therapist recommended the one I use, but there are lots of good ones on the market and probably twice as many rip offs. Good Luck, but be weary.
