Weight-Loss Which protein shake to use?

Weight-Loss
Protein does not make you lose weight. Being in a consistent caloric deficit makes you lose weight.

I thought protein was suppose to help you lean out and lose weight?
You probably thought wrong. Protein has calories just like carbs. Adding a food isn't going to have much of an impact on weight loss. Losing weight is simple - eat less calories, and burn more calories by becoming more active. Don't reduce calories too much, and optimise them by eating a healthy balance of nutritious foods. No foods, pills, or potions will help you lose weight by any substantial degree.

I am using this protein that has 200 calories per serving and less than 1 gram of carbs. I do cardio (running/walking) for about 30 minutes 5-6days out of the week. I do some circuit training and weights 2-3 times a week.

I'm just not sure if I should continue drinking protein shakes. Without them I eat only about 1000-1100 calories/day.

Get a good quality of whey, one that's made from milk, not soy (unless you're lactose intolerant). It should have between 8 to 10 gm of protein per scoop.

In a blender put:
1 cup nonfat milk
1.5 scoops whey
1 cup of ice
1 cup fresh fruit (strawberries, banana, whatever)
1 cup frozen fruit (mango is my favorite)
juice from 1/2 lemon or lime

blend until smooth
Makes 2 8oz glasses at around 170 calories per glass. Yummy!

Question on Protein Shakes?

I'm thinking of starting to have a protein shake for breakfast instead of my usual cereal with milk. The reason I would switch to this is that I know it would keep me fuller for longer and stop me snacking and I have read somewhere its good to have protein for breakfast.
But is it bad not to have some carbs at this time of the day? I don't usually exercise until the early evening and even then I would usually just do cardio. But I do get plenty of carbs in at lunch and dinner.
Does anyone have an opinion on whether this would help with weight loss? Is it ok nutritionally to swop one of my meals for a protein shake? And if so is breakfast the right time to do this?

I have a protein shake after a lot of my workouts, but never to replace a major meal like breakfast. Have you tried oatmeal? It's very healthy, and it will keep you full for a long time. I have it almost every morning, along with fruit, nuts, and nonfat milk.

I prefer to have a balanced breakfast. I wouldn't replace an entire meal with a simple protein shake.

1. Protein shakes are not very calorically dense. 100 or so calories, that's it.

2. Eating carbs at breakfast is not only okay, it is good, IMO.

A normal breakfast for me might look something like this:

Protein shake OR eggs (one or the other, depending on time constraints and mood)
Old fashioned oats
nuts
fruit
veggie

I have started replacing my breakfast with a protein shake and I am finding that it is filling me up until lunch, and I am losing an extra pound a week, is this a bad thing ????

Not necessarily bad. But it makes me wonder what your total caloric intake is for the day, as protein shakes alone aren't very calorie dense.

Well ............. its not good really, I have been dieting for quite a while now and like most people I am finding it harder and harder to lose the last stone ( am 6 stone down now ) probably due to me ruining my metabolism. My calories would be down at about 1000 - 1200 cals a day.

Without hi-jacking the thread any suggestions on sorting me out would be greatly appreciated

I think it would depend on your definition of "a protein shake". Do you mean a simple one scoop of protein powder dumped in some water, or do you mean using not only protein powder but maybe also milk, yogurt, oatmeal, berries, etc., and basically making a protein rich smoothie? Option #1 is no meal replacement, but option #2 could very well be.

So you have 14 lbs or so to lose yet. How long have you been dieting?

First, you can't ruin a metabolism.

Second, you are not eating enough. If you have to eat such a small amount of food in order to initiate some weight loss, it's time for a break.
