Jen, I'm sorry your RE licence has been delayed. Can you produce a stat dec saying you have been sober for 10 years to move things along. Surely, that should have some sway.
Well done on getting through the FD & good luck with your next one on Friday. If I wake up really hungry I delay it, but make sure I have 2 each week. I have been tempted to add a 3rd some weeks, but decided against it. Going to bed hungry you think you will wake up starving, but, so far I haven't once. I really enjoy every morsel on NFD's & don't overeat.

Ugh they changed the way things are posted and I just lost a long reply post!!!!

Sorry I have been MIA. There was a hurricane in my state and we decided to evacuate because of lost power and flooding. We went to Fl and it was so hot we couldn't even really enjoy the beach.

I wrote my statement for the real estate commission and a few days later I got my license in the mail. So YAY! I'm officially a real estate agent! Woot!! I'm not going to start working until Jan, though. Too much going on with the house, moving, and then the holidays.

My plan is to do W30 for the month of Oct. Today is Day 1. I don't know if I'm going to fast or not yet, but if I do, it will only be once a week.

Yesterday, I got a bike!!! I rode 5.5 miles on trails at the park. It was very fun, but not as much of a calorie burner as I would like. I burned 200 cals in 50 mins. Compared to swimming or the gym, that's kind of lame, lol. Still, it's exercise, and I enjoy it, so I will be biking a bit more now!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Strange they didn´t contact you to tell you what the hold-up was. I´m sure you´ll ace that essay (and maybe even learn something from it). If you´re combining Whole 30 with fast days please make sure you still get all your nutrients in.

They didn't contact me when I made a mistake on my application, either. I had to call them and bug them about it. But I have the license now, so I'm just moving on! I think I may do 1 fast day a week instead of 2.

Yay, you fasted! I have yet to try that, but really want to!!

I have a friend who is trying to get sober, and feel like I can't help because I haven't been through that. I wonder if it is anything like using food for comfort and if it would seem insulting to try to relate to him in that way? Sorry you had to go through that and really happy you are in recovery!

My experience with alcoholism is that there's nothing we can really do until the person is ready to change. Don't put to much stress on yourself to change your friend. I've worked with dozens of women alcoholics and this is the ugly truth of the matter: Friends, family, children, jobs -- it makes little difference unless they want to stop. I've seen people lose everything and keep drinking. It's tragic and very sad.

I had sugar addiction, so it's definitely a real thing. Addiction is all about masking, avoiding, and failing to process uncomfortable emotions while at the same time seeking pleasure. It's a real beast.

Okay I can't see the rest of replies so I will have to do another post?

I have the license!!! They sent it as soon as I emailed my statement! I rarely feel hunger in the morning. I'm just not an eater until about 11am. I'm not sure if I will fast this month or not with doing a round of W30. If so, probably just one day a week.

Hi Jenni! Thanks for the really wonderful reply! This is one of my very close friends from my college days, so it is really sad that I can't help him, but it's good to acknowledge that I can't and like you said, not put pressure on myself to try to be a better friend. If someone doesn't want to let you in, there's not much you can do, but as least he knows I care.

I definitely do (or hopefully, "did") some of that with food - stress eat so the feeling of fullness will mask uncomfortable feelings, so I can empathize to some extent! I am learning to just feel what I feel and notice that it releases a ton of stress to do that instead! I wish our culture valued feeling all of the emotions so we would all just learn emotional intelligence as teens instead of all this trying to be "good" and having no idea what to do with the rest of our human emotions and stuffing them instead!

Really glad you got your license! Hope you do really well in real estate!!

Yay!!!! Good news Jen :D
Thank you, Cate!! Feels GOOD! :D

I'm definitely a stuffer of feelings. It's something I've really had to work on in recovery. I do it almost automatically, so I have to make a conscious effort most of the time and ask myself "What am I feeling? What am I afraid of/angry at?" We actually have a step in AA that helps us process emotions! It's Step 10, where we do a daily inventory. Basically, at the end of each day we recall each instant that we felt fear, anger, etc. and then we "inventory" it and figure out why we felt/reacted the way we did. We inventory good stuff too and things we've done well. I have slacked on this step a lot, though. lol. I tend to do it only when things get out of control. I really need to make more of an effort on a daily basis instead of when things are going terribly wrong. It helps more because it doesn't build up. Anyway, yes, I completely agree that our culture does not encourage feeling our emotions. I think it encourages us to "buy" the feelings we want through products, which is why so many of us are also shopping addicts!

Congratulations on getting your license!
Thank you, Lama! :)

Good morning!

I made it through Day 1. Here's what I had to eat: 2 hard-boiled eggs, 2 handfuls of nuts, almond milk in coffee, Lara Bar, grilled chicken with cucumbers and tomatoes and vinaigrette dressing.

Walked my dog for 50 mins at the park. We actually have some very nice trails at the park, but I am waiting on my waterproof hiking shoes because I HATE when my feet get wet, and there are grassy areas on the trails that soak my sneakers.

My starting weight was 178.8 and I'm 176.8 this morning. Probably water/salt, but I'll take it! I have usually lost 8 lbs doing a round of W30. I lose about 5-6 pretty fast then a few more come off towards the end. I'd love to be in the 160's. I'm ready for it!!As for a goal weight, I'd be overjoyed at 150.

Some progress on the house! They build the front steps yesterday and the stone columns.

This is how it looks right now:

This is how it will look with posts (photoshopped for a visual):

I have to figure out what color to stain this wood and paint the front door, which is driving me a little nuts, lol. I almost like the natural color of the top piece, but I'm not sure it will go with the stone and the color we paint the siding -- the siding is not painted yet.

Here's the color the siding will be painted--it's the gray color next to the white:

So many decisions and choices! I can't wait until this is over.

Jenn

I’m sure you may have mentioned this before but what is W30 . Your first day sounds good though .

Thanks, Petal! :)

W30 = Whole 30. It's basically a paleo-like diet plan. You do it for 30 days.

You don't eat:
sugar or anything that contains sugar
beans or corn
pasta or processed foods
most oils
dairy
most salad dressings and condiments (because they contain sugar/dairy)
alcohol

You do eat:
veggies and fruits
meats
potatoes
olive oil
nuts - but not peanuts (they are actually a legume)
eggs
Lara bars (if they don't have added sugar)

I do a "modified" version where I do eat condiments like ketchup/mustard and salad dressings, but I stick to the plan otherwise.

I have done 2.5 rounds and lost about 23 lbs. I did my first round in Feb and after that, I completely gave up deserts and bread for the most part, although I've had pizza and tacos a few times.

Jenniquest,

I am new here and your story was the first that caught my eye. Its great to see someone start a journey and actually stick to it to see results. Gold star for you! :D. Most people give up before they see any results so i hope your journey encourages many more to stick to the plan!

Also the house you're building looks fantastic!

Wow, your house is coming out GORGEOUS!! I think you have our shingles, except ours are very dark grey, and it is very similar in style to a lot of the pictures I used for inspiration for our house. I really like the natural color of the top piece with the beautiful natural stone which has some similar tones in it. I wonder if a very soft olive green door would go with the top piece, the siding, and the stone? We have a clear coat douglas fir front door under an awning, and love the natural wood element. It's very inviting and warms up the colors around it. We don't have the finished stucco coat on the house yet, but it's going to be Benjamin Moore cheyenne green, with dark green eaves done in Benjamin Morre sharkskin - I mention that because your front door might look good in a cheyenne type color if you keep the natural wood top piece, or maybe even a darker green if not. Do you ever use the website houzz for inspiration? I love that site!

I love the 10th step you mentioned. I had a lot of self esteem issues that drove me to eat my feelings, so have been practicing Buddhist self compassion for about a year, and the social anxiety I had is much, much better. I think it would be wonderful to take a daily accounting of how I did emotionally, both the good and the bad. I think I'll try it! :)

I was reading on a fitbit email they sent that if you stay in fat burning mode while exercising instead of going all out, it burns more fat, but less calories for some reason, so maybe biking days can be fat burning days for a while until we get really good at biking big hills and such!

I love the paleo diet. We were on a modified version because my daughter has gluten sensitivity, but I baked too much gluten free stuff, and didn't lose any weight on it, so never tried it as a weight loss plan. Now I am doing low carb and can use almost all my paleo recipes again, minus the baking which was just too many calories! Congratualtions on the weight loss already!!

Your house looks absolutely gorgeous, Jen. So many decisions with house-building. I almost went mad with ours, but still love, love, love it & couldn't bear moving!

Thank you! :)

Jennie I like the sound of that for some reason . So do you go back to normal stuff the other times .

For the most part I go back to eating other stuff, yes. But it's usually LESS of it, if that makes sense. A bowl of pasta is a treat that I have once in a while, instead of weekly. Same goes for pizza, tacos, etc. My one weakness has been potato chips. For this round, my goal is to give them up after I have gone without them for the 30 days. That is what I did with deserts. I don't find the W30 to be a difficult diet at all. I do not count calories. Also, I lost all the weight not doing any exercise, really. I'm trying to incorporate regular exercise this time.

I love the look of those stairs!

Thanks!!

One of my 'regrets' on this house is not getting a solid wood door. At the time, I was just considering upkeep and such, but you really can't match the beauty of a solid wood door! This is our first home-build, so many lessons have been learned along the way! We are using PPG for paint -- I will have to look up what color Cheyenne matches in PPG. I am a regular at Houzz, yes! LOL. I have so many idea books I cannot keep track anymore.

A Buddhism practice sounds really healthy. I am not a religious person, but I have fused together my own sort of spirituality that uses AA's steps, some Buddhism, philosophy, and even some ideas in Christianity.

Low carb seems to work really well for me. I think it has more to do with calorie consumption than anything else. It just takes more carbs to feel full, as they are sort of like "air" with calories, so I end up eating more.

Your house looks absolutely gorgeous, Jen. So many decisions with house-building. I almost went mad with ours, but still love, love, love it & couldn't bear moving!

Oh yeah!!! The madness of the 1000's of decisions gets overwhelming. I can't wait until it is over and I can just move in and enjoy my new house!!!

Day 2 - W30 - Success!!!

Here's what I ate: 3 hard-boiled eggs, handful of nuts, rotisserie chicken, kale salad with cranberries and poppyseed dressing, Lara bar.

Weight: 175.4

The loss is fast the first week, but then it slows down for the next 3 weeks, and sometimes I'll even gain a few pounds back then lose them again accordingly with my hormone cycles, etc. Still feels good to be almost "under the hump" of 175 and closer to 160 than 180!

Trying to decide if I want to go to the gym today or walk my dog. Maybe both? What I could do is walk my dog, then later go over to the new house to check on it, and use the gym at the clubhouse. The clubhouse gym isn't as equipped as the Y, but it has everything I need to get some resistance training in. Also, I'd like to see if the pool is still swimmable or too cold...

Latest saga in house building:
Tile guy calls me yesterday. The company I bought my tile from has been a bit of a headache so far. First, they didn't have all of my tile when I went to pick it up. Then they forgot to give me my grout. Now, my tile guy says they didn't order enough for my master bath and I am short in that room. In the meantime, they ordered too much for the other baths and laundry and I have boxes of excess. So, I may have to call them today and complain a little (which I HATE doing).

But I AM grateful. And it would do my mind some good to count my blessings.

Gratitude list:

I am grateful for ...
my health, the health of my family, and the health of my dog
a really solid support system - i have so many women in my life right now that are supportive and accept me for who i am - flaws and all
the weather becoming more mild and comfortable
my sister not needing surgery for some health issues
the 'team' of guys helping to build my house and the relationships i have developed with them
a connection to something larger than myself that i absolutely can trust in
my spouse, who is loyal, forgiving, and who tries to make me happy
the community i have found here and the support we give each other
people who rub me the wrong way so that i have a mirror and some insight into what i need to change
another day of life, with all its beauty and challenges

Have an amazing day everyone!!

That´s a good list. I try to be aware of the good things in my life but it probably wouldn´t hurt to think about them methodically like that.
Also: I find having to complain about service excruciating BUT some companies seem to make it their business model to rely on people´s general reluctance to make a fuss and those need to get kicked in the butt smartly and firmly.

I had a few regrets once our house was mostly done, but they faded, and are not even important now. I'm sure no one else would even notice the things I would do over. I always talked with the contractors if they did something wrong, though I agree, it's hard to do. Then you can see if they are ethical and if you will hire them again or not, plus it doesn't hurt to see if they will eat some of the cost for their mistakes!

Love your gratitude list!! I am grateful for this community and getting to be a little part of it!

I love your gratitude list, Jen. I might do one myself today.
