Weight-Loss Water - Let Thirst be Your Guide!

Weight-Loss
I totally disagree. I don't think people need THAT much water and I do think that your body does take water from the foods you eat. It doesn't matter what else is in the food.
When I'm thirsty I drink water. If I'm not thirsty I don't.
All of this.... drink even if you're not thirsty..... eat even if you're not hungry or your body will go into starvation mode... I don't buy any of it.
I listen to my body and do what it tells me to do.

"What on Earth is 'metabolism', anyway?" People use the term all the time, but ask them what it means and you'll get all kinds of answers. Merriam Webster defines it as, "The process by which a substance is handled in the body." A little vague, but that's really all it means.

There are many forms of metabolism going on in your body right now, but the one everyone is talking about it the metabolism of fat. This is actually something that the liver does when it converts stored fat to energy. The liver has other functions, but this is one of its main jobs.

Unfortunately, another of the liver's duties is to pick up the slack for the kidneys, which need plenty of water to work properly. If the kidneys are water-deprived, the liver has to do their work along with its own, lowering its total productivity. It then can't metabolize fat as quickly or efficiently as it could when the kidneys were pulling their own weight. If you allow this to happen, not only are you being unfair to your liver, but you're also setting yourself up to store fat.

"I've tried it and I couldn't stand it!" The problem is that, though many decide to increase their water intake, very few stick with it. It's understandable. During the first few days of drinking more water than your body is accustomed to, you're running to the bathroom constantly. This can be very discouraging, and it can certainly interfere with an otherwise normal day at work. It seems that the water is coming out just as fast as it's going in, and many people decide that their new hydration habit is fruitless.

Do take heed , though. What is really happening is that your body is flushing itself of the water it has been storing throughout all those years of "survival mode". It takes a while, but this is a beautiful thing happening to you. As you continue to give your body all the water it could ask for, it gets rid of what it doesn't need. It gets rid of the water it was holding onto in your ankles and your hips and thighs, maybe even around your belly. You are excreting much more than you realize. Your body figures it doesn't need to save these stores anymore; it's trusting that the water will keep coming, and if it does, eventually, the flushing (of both the body and the potty) will cease, allowing the human to return to a normal life. It's true. This is called the "breakthrough point."

Water is the best beauty treatment. You've heard this since high school, and it's true. Water will do wonders for your looks! It flushes out impurities in your skin, leaving you with a clear, glowing complexion. It also makes your skin look younger. Skin that is becoming saggy, either due to aging or weight loss, plumps up very nicely when the skin cells are hydrated.

In addition, it improves muscle tone. You can lift weights until you're blue in the face, but if your muscles are suffering from a drought, you won't notice a pleasant difference in your appearance. Muscles that have all the water they need contract more easily, making your workout more effective, and you'll look much nicer than if you had flabby muscles under sagging skin.

A little long but useful information.

What about people with high bloood pressure. We know that water intake definitelly increases the blood pressure. Is it good idea for people with hypertonia to have 8 glasses of water a day. Won't it provoke a hypertonic crisis?

Water water everywhere

I agree that drinking plenty of PLAIN water is the answer. Yes, you can have limited juices (pure, real stuff), but you should also include plenty of foods with a naturally high water content (fruits, vegetables).

I start my day with a tall glass of hot water. I have for 25 years. I sip temperate water for the rest of the day. I'm almost 50 and I rarely use moisturizer or any cream on my face. I don't need it.

For some people, it takes a while to learn to love water, but once you do, your body will thank you.

I think as long as you don't feel thirsty, and your urine isn't dark, most people don't need to be drinking vast quantities of water. If you're doing physical work in a hot environment, yes, if you're working in a fairly cool office environment, you're just not losing enough water to need it.

I for one drink tons of water, go to the bathroom often and wouldn't have it any other way. No need to fight about it, but I know it's a hot button for people and people are very polarized on their views. I say drink it, cause my body craves it.

According to the Weight Watchers program, one is to consume six 8oz glasses of water, of which three can be be in the form of caffeine free beverages that do not contain alcohol.

I have come to understand that water is not only what your body needs, but water helps in weightloss in a number of ways, including making you feel fuller.

I usually have coffee or milk in the morning, and then fill a 32oz refillable water bottle with ice cold filtered water(always tastes better to me that way) and don't allow myself any other fluid untill the water is gone. It usually lasts the whole day at work, and I'll have a caffeine free diet soda with dinner, or a decaf coffee/tea before bed.

It was harder when I first started with the water bottle routine, and the frequent trips to the bathroom can be irritating, but it has gotten better and I actually find myself enjoying the water.

to wulsk

ok, I think there are some things that need to be clear:
Hypertonia is a non existent term, I think what you meant was Hypertension.
As if drinking more water would turn people hypertonic, well, "tonic" refers to the concentration of "ions" in plasma, mainly sodium, then drinking more water couldn't possibly turn you "hypertonic", since the effect would be exactly the opposite, your "ions" would be less concentrated. Now, hypertension is related to higher concentration of sodium, so if you drink water and you lower the concentration, then the effect would be a lower blood pressure. The excess water would be eliminated by the kidneys, among with any excess sodium.
So, in summary, to answer your question:
NO drinking more water wouldn't be harmful at all to people with high blood pressure.
(Just in case, I happen to have an MD and a PhD degree to back up whathever I say ;))

Since you have an MD and a PhD, I'm very surprised that you didn't realize the correct term was "[FONT=verdana, Arial, Helvetica]hyponatremia". Yes, there is such a term; google it, and you'll find lots of articles on it.

The 8x8 water stuff is an urban legend. Yes, you need approximately 64 ozs. of water a day, but that can come from any source, including coffee, fruit, soda pop, whatever. If you work out intensely, you may need to get more hydration.

Most doctors and coaches now are advising people just to consume water sensibly. They actually are having problems at marathons and other high endurance events, where people who are so hyped up about their water intake are consuming way too much water, i.e. they are inducing a state of hyponatremia. That can be as deadly as dehydration.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not against drinking water, any more than I'm against consuming oxygen. But I don't advocate going around guzzling water all day any more than I would advocate someone in normal health walking around attached to an oxygen tank, just because "oxygen is a good thing."

People with high blood pressure needs to drink as much water as anyone else. What you can't do is drinking too much at a time.
You take diurectic pills I suppose, so dont be afraid, when your blood pressure gets high, your sistem will produce urine. Our body doesnt it naturally but as long as you have that problem, pills help it doing the job =)
The only inconvenient for you is that you need to go to the bathroom more often than others.
In the matter of hipotonia, it's the same, you have hormones whose jobs is to make sure that your salt concentration remains the same and if there is less minerals than usual, they will make your body produce urine more diluted, keeping the minerals in the blood, so their concentration remains the same.
You can always read about hydroelectrolytic balance at any human physiology book, that'll say in fancy words what I said now ;)

hyponatremia just relates to sodium. when you say hypotonic/hypertonic you talk about all the minerals together, cells, whatever solutes are there, not just sodium.
You can have hyponatremia just like you can have hypocalcemia, hypocaliemia, hypomagnesemia, hypofosfatemia, yada yada..

To TomO

Hi TomO:
First of all, I never said anything about hyponatremia being a "nonexistent term", I was refering to Hypertonia in the sense that is trying to imply, as if it's a disease, which it is not, since he had the term confused with "hypertension", which means "high blood pressure". Hypertonia doesn't exist as a disease, the proper term would be "hypertonic", which makes reference to the concentration of Ions in your blood. An "isotonic" solution would be one with the same conentration, "hypotonic" one with a lower concentration and an "hypertonic" would be one with a higher concentration. When "wulsk" implied that by drinking more water you would fall into an a state of "hypertonia", well that's a totally incorrect idea, first of all, because the term doesn't exist or it is not a disease by itself, and second, because as you stated, in terms of ionic concentration, quite the contrary happens, you tend to reach lower concentration of ions, or as such, an "hypotonic" state. But in normal conditions, and considering that the amount of recommended water is taken at regular intervals and not in one single intake, then this effect would be compensated, so you would really never be "hypotonic", everyone has the necessary physiological mechanisms to keep "homeostasis", or in pther words, to compensate.
Now in reference to your comment about people getting "hypotonic" when doing extenuating sports, like marathons, well, I must remind you that these are extreme conditions. Anyone doing this kind of activity is losing not only water, but electrolytes too. So they need to substitute their intake with and electrolytic solution (something with water and ions), in order to replenish. If they drink water only, then as you mentioned, an "hypotonic" state happens, mainly because of the loss of sodium, but also because you are losing potassium, among other ions. You would then be "hyponatremic" and "hypokalemic"; This state is also known as "hydric intoxication", and as you state, it can be deadly.
Bt the thing is, PEOPLE DON'T NORMALLY RUN MARATHONS ON AN EVERYDAY BASIS. So drinking water should mean no harm, and it could do a lot of good.
By the way, the "urban legend" term is overrated, I don't think it applies in this case, because, there are more opinions in favor (from experts that is) than against it (Just Google it).
As to getting water from other sources like soda, coffee and that sort of drinks, well, it is true, but remember that it comes with a plus, and that plus is not always good for weight loss.

To make my position a bit clearer, if you want to drink heaps of water, go for it, but there's no need to either make yourself drink or feel bad if you didn't drink a set amount. We're all different, we all need different amounts of water to function. I don't drink a lot of water during the day, and I'm in good health. If I feel even a little thirsty I get a drink, but if I don't feel the need for it, I don't worry about it.

water

I drink 3 710ml water bottles a day which is almost 9cups
and i always feel good after i drink water, and i dont feel
as hungry. ALSO i LOVE crystal light! it makes driking 9 cups
of water way easy and delicious!

Fat to water weight loss

I read some where that for each pound of fat there is 7-10 pounds of water. I'm not totally sure if this is true or not. But if it is wouldn't this mean losing 14-20 pounds a week would be ideal if losing 2 pounds of fat . Anyone have an other input in on this?

Flavored Water

So I'm trying to drink more water and I love these flavored waters. I'm just wondering if they're bad for you. They have no carbs or calories. They're sweetened with splenda.
So what's the verdict?

Water Problem

Hi there, i've recently entered a challange with my girlfriend to see who can loose the most weight

my problem is that after reading a couple of articles and tips on the net, i've come to the understanding that drinking a lot of water helps alot, but (and this may sound daft) i don't like water, not on it's own anyway. if it's with dilute juice it's fine... would this still be ok to drink?

thanks in advance

They seems ok

They seems OK to me after reading that the flavors are natural essences and not artificial flavors. I do however think regular water is cheaper!!! But if this makes you drink a bit more then by all means go for it. Splenda has been found to trigger migraines for some people, so if that is a problem for you I would not eat/or drink anything with Splenda, unless of course you have tried it and had no problems. I still think normal water is the better. I would not get all my water this way.

Thanks:)
I've had splenda, and this water, before and it doesn't bother me. I really love these waters and I feel like I'm more likely to drink more water when I have them around. I do try to drink just water as much as I can but the flavored waters also help me steer away from juice which is always a temptation for me. So thanks, and I may just buy some more next time I'm at costco.

Water Woes/Help?!

OK..

I hate plain water - just hate it!

Our water tastes like dirty sock laundry water.. :rotflmao:

We got a Brita and it's so much better, but there is still the prob of me not wantin' plain water.

#1 I know water is important/good for us -

#2 I know it plays a key roll in weight loss. {I have 35-45 more lbs. to lose}

I'm so proud of myself bc I bought this nifty 1 liter carry jug w/drinking spout..

I filled it w/Brita water and keep in fridge and swig on it like it's moonshine. ;)

I'm gettin' down 1 1/2 jugs per day so far....

Here's the issue:

I'm not hungry now!! What the heck?

All I've had today is 1 freakin' c. all natural banana/almond granola cereal w/1% milk..

This is not good bc my body needs food/fuel/energy

{as you will find in my diary, I have been on plan and doin' great with eating} until the water.

What the heck?

Will this pass as my body adjusts to this much water?

I'm scared to death I'm gonna start gaining weight again bc of not eating...That's mostly how I got in this mess...

Not really hungry bc I'm a busy person so I wouldn't eat all day, BUT at dinner would pig out and feel the need/urge to snack the rest of evening..

Don't wanna go there again for cryin' out loud.

I won't even get started on how my bathroom is now my livin' room bc I'm teeteeing every 3 mins.

:D

Help!?

Are you sure you need that much water? I know a lot of people in the weight loss world drink it like its going out of style, but are you sure the excess water has the desired result (whatever that might be)? Wouldn't we all be more thirsty and all naturally drink tons and tons of water if our bodies honestly craved so much fluid? I dunno..
