Cohen's Lifestyle Tips for a Cohen Newbie...

Prefix for Cohen's Lifestyle
Just joint cohens

Hi all
just joint Cohens for the first time - serial dieter this is the one i can feel it. Have 40 kgs to lose - 88 pounds my second child is 10 months old and the preg weight has just piled on and seems to have found a comfortable home this time!!! so really need some support from any or many of you out there - on day 10 and still very very hungry!! any tips. thanks max66

max66- Welcome to the forum. In order to try to help you with the hunger, detail for us what you have been eating and at what times. Just a day will do. Are you eating lots of apples for example? For many, me included, apples make them hungry. I used to have my crackers in between meals rather than with meals & often with my fruit. Drink lots of water! 2-3 litres a day. If you feel hungry have a large glass of water. Yoghurt & fruit for breakfast I found was much more filling than the other choices. Are you exercising? Exercise makes you hungry. That's why increasing your exercise on Cohen's is not recommended. Go for a gentle walk instead if you are.
I have to go, cheers, Cate

hi max66 welcome to the forum..

i agree with cate list what you have had and when.. remember to always drink your water and that by day 4 -7 that should start to go away, its mainly because we are used of the pantry monster feeding when we are bored, tired, upset, happy etc...thats the first habbit we brake with cohens.. its great...I am down to 40kgs too.. If it helps have a chewy or two that helps trick your cravings and yearnings...i found that the egg helped me feel fuller in the morning but now i dont mix my yogurt withanything it stays down a lot better.. ha ha h a what a bag of advice i better go

I've been bad and not posting... but I am losing!!!

I'm going to stay on prgram while he is here... but I will have to figure out how I am going to it. He will be coming for 14 days. So... I am working for most of them so that means, breakfast and lunch are all going to be ok because of work.

Dinner will be the issue, but I can handle that if we go out, with salads and such. I will just need to plan ahead.

Last week I ate out and I did cottage cheese while I was out or grated cheese. I can always get a plain sald and then put the salad on it. I will get it figured out.

Hopefully we will be cool with everything and if not to bad for him. I
will just need to convinvce hime that it is totally ok to eat different from me and to not feel bad.

You can do it I'm sure. Any good friend will support what you are doing. I loved watching others eat things I would have liked to eat. Crazy, I know, but I also felt extra good not having it rather than feeling like I was missing out. My husband got used to not feeling guilty eating & drinking in front of me. After all, he does not have a problem with his weight, I do. Enjoy the time with your friend. I'm sure it's your company he enjoys & he won't care what you do or do not eat while he is there. Cheers, Cate.

I find most people happy and supportive.
I am sure you will find a way around it.. You can always post on the forum .. You are doing so well, Az, dont get down on yourself.. You have done so well.. i think most people find dinner the hardest especially when we are the ones who have to cook and serve.. i cook with my tongue :)P i find it very hard serving food i have not taste tested.. My husbands is hopeless when it comes to taste testing.. food fits into a couple of categories:
its okay
Its good
Very nice thank you

is there any more..
and when its bad
!!!Whats in this!!!! AARGHH..

I havent had the last one in a very long time...... but descriptive..no...Any way thats a bit off track..

I am sure you will do well..You have a great outlook .... so, enjoy your company.. I hope you have a pleasent time and remember we are always here..

Be good to yourself..

some recipes and tips

Thanks for all the support - really need it. I am doing pretty good on the program but i am allergic to egg and yogurt so pretty limiting for me especially my breakfasts.

B - cheese, cracker and veg
snack - 1 apple
L- chicken and cabbage
snack - 1 apple plus crackers
D - beef and mushroom or zuchini or asparagus
1 diet 7-up a day
plus 3 litres of water
Its day 14 tomorrow and i have yet to weigh myself. The process here in singapore seems a bit different i think. We had to pay up front for the whole weight loss and really dont need to go to the clinic again until the refeed. Does the refeed work at any point or only when the weight they have given you is reached - i hope too but realistically have never been 40 kgs less in my life in terms of weight (57K) dont ever remember being in the 50's as far as weight is concerned so a little worried about achieving it.
Also any tips on good recipes - how do you make a soup on this diet cant really figure that out - recipes on salad dressings would be good too.
Its so wonderful to have you all to chat to during this time - its so nice not to have to EXPLAIN everything to someone not on cohens. At the moment watching season one of gossip girl and staying home to fight the cravings!!!
cheers to all

Refeed is best done at your goal weight, most people still loose weight on refeed, my mum ended up an extra 2-3 kg lighter... I think if you are not at goal weight you are more likely to regain the weight.. I am sure Cate will be in later to offer extra advice.. cate has completed cohens and is mine of advice and support....

Congrats Day 14..:party:Well done..
How does it work over there? is it online/email support? in WA we are asked to visit the clinic at least once a month, on or close to our blood test/weigh in dates..
My days a tuesday, as today is my 1st day on my NEW program...

Did you get a recipe book? My soups have been rather funky so i cannot offer advice... ha ha ha....

Stay positive, i am sure you will make your goal weight... It has been many many years since i was 59 kg but i look forward to the day next year when i am ... we can do it.... Just think when you reach goal weight it will be all the sweeter for you, totally new you.. I fear i may look a little "shrink wrapped" after four kids 50 kgs and loads of stretch marks... Hubby said he doesnt care he loves me any way and to listen to my own advice... "Its all in the packaging".. funny bugger..

It can be hard explaining to people, i think mainly because we feel like we are being judged..
How many times have you tried to shift your weight?.. alot of us get it to move for a bit then things happen and hello it all comes back again but with a little extra.. the old yo yo thing...
I find most people curious and supportive but it can be tedious... and the sympathy food, its like we are starving i think i need some cards as i find i constantly say the same things when i am out and about:
  • "no honest, i have eaten and i am fine"...
  • "No thanks, i am happy with my water"...
  • "thats okay you enjoy your food, its not time for my meal"...
  • "i will just eat my fruit / crackers"
...gggrrrr my in laws are the worst...... and my bridezilla who has no excuses because she knows all about cohens... as i tried it before..... grrrrr...

Anyway i have carried on for waaaaaayyyyyy to long..
I wish you well, give yourself a big pat on the back. you have done so well.

Thanks loved your message - feel so much better - just weighed myself after 2 weeks and have lost 5 kgs - i know i should be feeling fantastic - its been so long that i have done anything that has yielded these results but just feel i have so far to go - do you know if that is a good weight loss or average - also my period is due to start anyday does that make any difference. never did measure myself. so need some guidance!!!! thanks a mill. max66

Wow 5kg!!!!

:hurray:14 days up and 5 kgs down.. that is great... :hurray:
5 kgs is great keep it up. i think you are about average the first week or two is a dramatic drop... My clinic said average (90% of women) lost 7.5 kg in the 1st month but by the 12 week mark you will have lost a minimum of 17kg..... i was told previously the larger you are the faster you shrink..

I think you may benefit from some goal setting.. Decide on some small acheivements and some bigger ones that you can accomplish along the program...Maybe you can start with reaching 10% .... If so Goal #1 is accomplished.. .. maybe the next goal is 10 kg or getting rid of an item or two of clothing.. It does help to focus our attention on the next goal rather then the final goal...

When you look at how much you have yet to loose, it looks like such a long road but you can do it.. you will get there and you have already accomplished so much...

From my own experience i have not found that my period affects the cohens at all, though i have found and heard that it can make your period heavier and a bit more regular..

Okay measuring..yes do start doing this, it is great to see the cm drop away....
Bust: is nipple to nipple (in bra) its the fullest measurement... you keep your finger between the tape and the area you are measuring so its not skin tight...
I have my chart here and i see they dont have midrift.. this is just under your bust where your bra sits.. this is a great place to measure and see a noticable difference.. so i have added it to my list..
Its not too hard to self measure, a mirror may help to see if your lines are straight.... I am hopeless..:D
Cate may be able to offer some better advice on measuring.. he he he

I have only just started to get used to the yogurt so you are not missing out... just try and remember its short term... 6 months and you will be thin and have discovered what works best for you...i dont eat fish/seafood so that rules out 1/4 of my options...
I do however thoroughly enjoy steak... yum yum yum...
and mangos... yum yum yum...

I need to refill my water bottle and have my crackers...

Thanks so much for your lovely post - makes me def feel much better. Today i had mango in the morning first time on the diet and it was delicious. Finding it diff to eat my second fruit on some days so just skip it but i LOVE the crackers and nibble them like a rabbit!! I know what you mean about 6 months and then being thin - thats what gets me going. For me its all about days rather than weight so i am setting short term day goals as in pass 30 days on diet, then 50 then 100 etc etc (with no deviation at all) - the weight thing is tougher and a bit more frustrating i think. Will also weigh myself once a month easier to handle the scale and my mood swings which are directly related....
cheers and thanks max66

Max 66- Sounds like you have settled into the program & have the right attitude to succeed. Why not start your own diary? Just click on "start a new thread" at the top of the Cohen's page & call it something that we know means it's your own diary like "Max 66's diary" or something more interesting than that & we'll visit you there. Your own diary is where you can vent, explore your feelings out loud, talk about your day etc. It's all yours & others can visit you there. All the best, Cate.

Max66

i have started a new thread..
"How long can you last?... Deviation Free.."
Hope to see you posting..

Eating your fruit gets easier just make an effort to remember them, it is important..I love apples... yum yum and great for the shrinkage too.. just be careful as some people find they make them hungry...
I love mangos too... best thing about cohens is i can make an excuse to indulge in lots .....

Having your own diary is a big help, its all about you....
I think posting in general is therapeutic...

I better be off..Spent way to much time here already ...
Be back tonight..

Arg!

I am not sure what my issue has been this week... I am NOT taking my vitamin and NOT drinking EVEN CLOSE to the right amount of water!!!

I lost 4 lbs last week and then 1.5 lbs this week.. and i KNOW its because of the vitamin!

Seriouly.. I eat all the food right and then stupid me doesn't drink the right water.

It is just pure lazyness....

I have .5 l of water at home, in the car...

SO....

the new game plan is this:

I just brought .5 l of water into work. Put more in the car and at home.

I can't get out of the car till I finish 1 each time.... on my way into and home from work.

Then I have to drink one in the morning hours of work and one in the afternoon at work.

That gets me my 2 L a day. I think I should be drinking even more so.. I am going to have to push it.

I mean.. I've barely even had my Coke Zero, so I know I'm dehydrated and I've been eating sheese every day, so I am retaining it all too!

Double WHAMY!!!!

OK... water is my big focus this next week.

I've drank 1 L so far. I am going to work out and will drink one then and then a .5 L on my way home. THen I will just need one more .5 and I will be good.

I also took my vitamin today, but I am going to start taking a 2nd a lunch because of me working out.

OK...

I need to lose 3 lbs a week for the next 2 weeks!!!

Hi CohenInAz, You are still losing so that's great. We are told to try to limit cheese to no more than 3 times a week because of the high salt content which causes water retention. (Feta maximum once a week.) Cheese also, literally, clogs me up. I had bigger losses when I reduced the cheese. Water is crucial. The more water you drink the less your body holds on to it I have found & you feel so much better because of it. I feel much more alert after I have had a glass of water. Personally I think it's one of the most important components of Cohen's. Cheers for now, Cate

See... I knew I heard that somewhere. I had asked my consultant about it and said there was no limit on cheese except for once a day... a few weeks ago. But it does make sense to only have it 3 times a week. I am going to put that into action next week.

I had feta yesterday so I am tapped out there and will take the other cheese on Monday and Wednesday. I think I will do Tuna on Tue and Thursday.

It just makes for such an easier lunch than taking the grill with me to work.

I was also surprsied that I wehnt to the gym twice this week, which my consultant approved and I didn't lose a lbs! Ha. I am going to keep going because I need to get the training in for the half marathon, plus I was doing it before I started Cohen...so finally back to it.

I laugh, because I think my body is weird. Apples don;t make me hungry and I am SO not hungry after working out... I have to force myself to eat. Even the next day.

I am actually a bit sore from yesterday, I did the total body trainer (its an oliptical with arm things you move to train your arms too...) Man!

Ok.. well glad everyone is going well. I am going to go have my yogurt!

Cheese

Hmmmm....Cheese, i was told once every 3 days or twice a week.. especially if you want that weight to move...
Do you have access to a microwave at work?
I am quite happy to eat my food cold.. i just pre cook it and take it along with me.. i find by the time my five hours or so is up i am starving, so i wouldn't really care if it was cold or hot as long as it was heading for my tummy:piggy:...bahahahahah... I think i also remember reading something about tuna too... was it you AZ who was eating to much tuna? On the work out thing.. be warned as your fat levels lower you may find that you did get hungry so just keep it in mind as you start to shrink and get closer to your GW..
as i recently attended an info session at cohens i am a mine of info.... bahahahahah.. but any way they say the longer the plateau the greater the loss, so dont worry about the lbs not budging....

anyway better go and read the rest....

good luck and may the water be with you....

Cheese

Oh my god - i have cheese everyday for breakfast since i cant bear yogurt and allergic to egg!!! have been doing it for the last 18 days since i started the diet. I re checked with the consultant and she said it was ok to have it once a day.....guess i need to give it a break!!! My other breakfast option is fish!!!!!!!!!! yuck.........

Max66, you may have an acception... dont stress to much.. but yes as cate said due to the salt and its water retention properties most of us are restricted to only a couple of servings a week ... You seem to have been doing well, we are just posting information that was given to us... with your allergies you may find they dont apply.. or else your cheese is exceptionally good.... ha ha ha.. keep us updated..
