Weight-Loss Summer Shake-Up Challenge Chat Thread

Weight-Loss
Thanx Margaret for already adding my exercise points in, now i guess i should update everythign else.

I finally seem to have gotten my exercise groove back and as routine...it kills me now to miss a work out or to be too tired for p90x...

I found a system.routine...if i start p90x on Sunday then I can do it through till thurs - tha tis only 5 days a week but i lost one cd and i dont do the stretchign cd cuz it isnt mandetory...

So this way i can still get all my p90 in and i can still do my water areobics 3 nights a week and this also allows me my lazy and exhausted fris and sats:)

I go to deep water water areobics twice a week adn it is a killer work out, I must say i consider myself in good shape, i've been exercising on and off forever at least the last 4 yrs consistnatly and i did lots before my last pregnancy

Ive tried everythign and done lots...right down to boot camp but htis deep water is ultimate...kicks my ass everytime...you are emerged in the water (well I am, im short) from top of shoulders down, lol...using my weight and the water as resistance!

man.. i don't know how some of you do it.. let alone how i manage to find time to exercise.. i'm exhausted. my oldest started kindergarten this year. he has to be at school at 8:25am which means mommy has to get up and get things ready around 7am each morning and i'm not used to getting up before 8am. he's gone from 8:25am to 1:25pm each day so i'm alone with baby which gives me time for homework and working out or cleaning... which in my house is a workout in itself.. haha anyways. hopefully i'll be back around more.. if not i'll check in every now and then.. this school thing is hard.. plus with 2 kiddos.

There is nothing quite like freshly baked and still warm bread to make us carboholics just quiver, huh?:drool5: couple that with cheesecake, wait did you say Bailey's as in like the liquor? OMG, I would have died...

All I can say is that Rod and I are wondering when we can get back there for more food. The homemade cheesecake was divine. I cannot praise it enough. It wasnt like the shop bought ones which may have had the flavour (in this case Bailey's liqueur) in the cream - the base was moist and appeared to have the flavour too. Then it was served with cream (and a bit of chocolate in it too). There is no way that I could resist it if eating in there again.

'K, so like, I went out today and cycled 16 miles. That is a little low for me, I've been trying to get 20 + every day during the week. Unfortunately, I bitched and whined about how awful the weather was for the first part of the summer... Be careful what you wish for. It was about 92°F yesterday (33°C), 95°F (35°C) today and will be back in the same neighborhood tomorrow. The humidity is also high, so it was really cooking today. Sixteen miles and you could have wrung me out like a dishrag.

On the plus side, I'm back down to 304 or so and hoping to at least keep that number through the weekend. This will be a major challenge given that I'm going to a bbq on Saturday and going away for the night on Sunday. I'll see how I do.

Well done for getting the exercise done in difficult weather.

Congratulations on getting back down to 304. If you focus on weight loss at the barbeque you should be able to make some healthy choices. Grilled meat and salad should be there a-plenty - and that can be a really good meal choice for weight loss. You just have to be firm when it comes to things like salad dressings. If you have any doubt as to how the person throwing the barbeque prepares their salads - you could always take a bowl with you and dig in there. The same with desserts - you could take a huge bowl of fresh fruit salad and eat a lot of food.

Going away for the night on Sunday can be fraught with danger too. As a wise man recently said "into every life a few extra calories must fall. Just how we deal with them afterwards is what matters."

It is great that you are getting back into being the exercise demon that you have so often been in the past. You know how important it is for our projects. You do so well to fit it in with all your other calls on your time.

I will look out for your scoresheet updates for last week and alter the points to reflect things when I get a chance. Let me know if I miss anything out. I want to reward you for your hard work.

Heather - you have to remember that some of us are kept busier than others by their everyday duties - and some abandon their other responsibilties. I am terrible at leaving housework undone in order to go out walking. I know that there are things to do in the home - but I have a fear of not getting the exercise done... We should not compare ourselves to each other - but to our own possible levels.

We all know that you are kept very busy with both a baby and a disabled child - plus finding time for your studies. You do amazingly well to get so much exercise in.

There is no doubting that regular exercise does help us to control our weight. If we can find the time to do it - we will benefit from doing it. In the past we ALL told ourselves that we didnt have the time - but in fact we often found the time for lots of unproductive things (like watching television). The bottom line is that many of us became big because we liked our food a bit too much (either for its own sake or as some sort of comfort mechanism) and didnt choose to exercise enough to burn off the calories that we ate. Not all of us - but I will wager - a good proportion of us. I certainly didnt do enough exercise - as is demonstrated by the way that I was able to lose weight when I changed that.

Seems like that 'munchy-bug' is highly addictive....I've found myself prowling around the kitchen cupboard a lot recently as well. Fortunately I managed to limit myself to a couple of McVitties Wholegrain digestives with chocolate, and even squeezed them into my daily calorie allowance - but for the 170 cals I could have had something better.

I'm quite happy with the latest challenge - I only eat bread in the morning, and always wholegrain. Not just the fluffy stuff that Hovis and all of those sell - that's not even bread as far as I'm concerned. It's just fluff with a crust. *lol*....I find it really difficult to get proper bread in the UK, unless I make it myself or go to Aldi or other places that sell international food.

Anyway, I don't eat pasta, rice or potatoes, and I have some wholgrain shredded wheat in the cupboard, but don't really eat it often - I don't eat any other cereal. So, that's easy, as well as the carb free meal one....yay!

Again, sorry for being absent so much....I seem to have my priorities messed up a little recently. I spent loads of time on absolutely useless stuff, and not enough on the things that are actually important to me. That, and the kid being on holiday means very limited amount of time to myself, and never longer than about 10 minutes in a row. I am sooooo looking forward to September 4th, when school starts again.

Anyway, Cord and Omega, have fun on your time away. Behave, and don't do anything the rest of us wouldn't do! ;)

Thanks San - I probably ate some things that I hope that you are strong enough to avoid. The muchies can be a killer for us all. Well done for managing to contain your attack within your calorie allowance.

I am pleased that you find the bonus to be not too onerous. Many people do have a problem with the starchy carbs though. I know that I kicked and screamed when both my slimming group leaders suggested to me that cutting out cereals may help me get to goal weight. I thought about it for a couple of months before I gave it a try - I really liked those honey shreddies. In the end I made the change - and now I really like my yoghurts that I have instead. It had the extra benefit that I always hit my calcium target nowadays. I used to have to count it up - and if in doubt I used to take a supplement.

You are bound to be busy while your stepson is on school holidays.

Wellll....let's just say I am not doing as well as I thought I would.

Yesterday I made it to a staggering total of 300 calories. Today I managed 400, but only because I had chocolate cookies.

I just don't want to eat at all. Just looking at food makes me want to throw up. The best I've eaten all day was a banana for breakfast. I'm drinking loads, so I should get my water points, but I won't get anything for exercise either, since I am lucky if I can make it upstairs to the bathroom without feeling dizzy, nevermind trying to work out.

It's one of those weeks where everything goes wrong, and while other people eat more when they aren't feeling too well, I am the opposite....I just stop eating altogether. The only reason I ate anything today was because my husband kept nagging....I'm not even hungry....*shrug*

I am so sorry to hear that you are feeling ill. Look after yourself. I have to admit that I do not go off my food when I am ill - I tend to enter the zone of comfort eating and watch my calories go high high high...

I have heard of people on the forum losing weight when they were ill - Tinkerbell comes to mind - and I think that Abbagirl lost some weight that way. I hate to say it - but we really should try to eat something nourishing and light if at all possible. I am pleased that your husband is keeping a close eye on you. I am sure that he will be making sure that you consult your doctor if there is no rapid improvement. We have to prioritise our own health when something is clearly not right.

I have just posted the bonus for the final week of the challenge. I suspect that I am not going to be the only person who will find it difficult - but the final week always tended to be a little extra hard.

WEEK 9 – week starting 22 Aug 09

Well we all know that Kimberly did not like the bonus last week – but she should be comfortable with this week’s bonus because it is taken directly from week 1 of the Biggest Loser challenge that she ran in January 2008. I am happy to repeat her rulings regarding which foods were and were not classed as junk.

…this week's bonus is to NOT eat any junk food. That means sweets, deep fried food, fast food, chips (crisps), etc. This includes 100 calorie packs b/c they are still sweets or chips. Now a deli-type sandwich from a deli is ok--even if it's a chain like Subway or Quiznos, etc. A Big Mac is not ok. Salads from fast foods are ok, but take note that they're full of sodium that'll make you retain water. So if you have any of this stuff hanging around, eat it up before Friday...lol. Alcohol is also a no-no this week.

Fortunately this is the last week of the challenge so we will not have to continue it forever into the future.

http://weight-loss.fitness.com/club...t-loser-style-bls-challenge-week-1-bonus.html

From a quick scan through the thread Starbuck’s style coffees are junk as are cakes and cookies. No more Bailey’s cheesecake for me…
High calorie sodas are not ok.
Home made pizzas are ok if made in a healthy manner as are French fries if made from potato and fry light (oven chips need to just contain potato).
Rice cakes and yoghurts were both ruled as ok.
Sugar free sweets are ok.

The thread actually includes Kimberly’s excellent exercise ruling at the end. This challenge ruling should go down in forum history in my opinion.

My challenge to you for this week is to not have any junk food (X) - 3 points per day.

So –have no junk food to collect 21 points.

Reinforcing previous bonuses, I will give 1 point for each day that you have 5-a-day, 1 point for each day that you drink your allocation of water, 1 point for each day that you have sufficient calcium, 1 point per ½ cup of beans (max 3 cups), 1 point for each day that you have 25g fibre, 1 point for each day that you have enough protein, 1 point for each day when you restrict your starchy carbs, 1 point for each day you eat 3 colours of fruit/veg and 1 point for each day you switch your starchy carbs giving a possible maximum 62 points. Anyone reporting a 3 litre lower level of water drinking will earn half a point for each day.

ADDITIONAL ONE-OFF WEEK 9 BONUS
We will continue the extra fruit/veg bonus. I will give 2 points for each different item of fruit /veg that we eat a portion of during week 9 – maximum 5 items.

Wk9---0hrs 00mins----ssmtwtf---ssmtwtf---ssmtwtf---ssmtwtf---ssmtwtf---ssmtwtf---123456---ssmtwtf---ssmtwtf---ssmtwtf---newveg*0---
If someone completes all of their tasks I would expect their Wk9 main scoresheet line to look as follows:
Wk9---10hrs 00mins----XXXXXXX---MMMMMMM---SSSSSSS---JJJJJJJ---PPPPPPP---FFFFFFF---BBBBBB---CCCCCCC---WWWWWWW---VVVVVVV----newveg*5

Hi, I'm back.

Been eating very poorly - not likely to get more than a few points this week.

Exercise has been okay, though, and I held my weight stable over the last week, which is good considering what I have been eating. White bread, white rice, ice cream, I even had a coke on Sunday.

Checked my body fat this morning, and it seems to have gone down (although I take the readings with a grain of salt, looking more at the overall long-term trend).

It is great that you have kept your exercise levels high - I have always maintained that I am having a good day if all I do is get my exercise done. If I am good with my food I am having a great day.

The fact that your weight has held stable confirms that this is the case for you too. We would have never got the problems that we got with our weight if we had always been exercise fiends...

Sorry to hear that you have been eating badly - we all have times when we do not focus as strongly on our food as normal. I didnt manage my water for four days running this week...

It is great news about your body fat. I have never had such a reading taken. I hate to think how high mine used to be... I am probably better off not knowing...

Well i've updated my scoresheet and am planning to keep up with it hopefully now that my oldest is in school. so far today i've gotten in 91 minutes of exercise and will be getting in a few more minutes.. haha before school tonight while cleaning the house after i get my oldest from school. i love being able to workout during the day while its just me and baby but he sometimes gets in the way cause he crawls on my balance board for wii fit or my ddr pad. so i have to pick him up and hold him which adds 21 lbs to my workout.. but i get a good one.. haha

just thought i would update a little.. haha

That extra 21 pounds will make your work out more effective. I know that when I was bigger the exercise used to make the weight fall off. As I got smaller I saw my rate of weight loss fall so I had to either get used to a lower rate of weight loss or increase the distance walked. Carrying an extra 21 pounds certainly makes a difference.

Your exercise with the baby sounds good fun too. That lucky baby is going to be learning that exercise is fun from a very young age. It should make him be more inclined to be fit and of a healthy weight - what a great lesson he is learning.

Very clever! Using my own words against me..lol. How can I argue against that?? This one is gonna seriously kill me. Thank God it is only for one week!!

I had to go back and read that bc I had no idea what you were talking about..lol. All I can say is :smilielol5: :rotflmao:  I might have to go out and buy a heart rate monitor. :D

This is completely unrelated to our challenge, but May had gone without pooping since Monday. She normally poops 1-4 times per day. Apparently this is not unusual, and as she didn't seem constipated, I wasn't too worried. I was, however, warned that when she does go, to be prepared for a total blowout, and I was told some God-awful diaper blowout horror stories by other mothers--such as a carseat full of poop, a stroller full of poop, having to give baby a bath in the restaurant bathroom sink it was so bad, etc. :ack2: So I was scared to leave the house with her!! lol

Anyway, she finally pooped this morning. I had never been afraid of a diaper change until today. Well, I think it is a testimony to my awesome cloth diapers that it wasn't a massive blowout, b/c I'm pretty sure that it would've been in a disposable. Holy crap!! :D

Well, maybe this post will ruin your appetites and help you stay away from the junk food this coming week. Whenever you're about to reach for *insert junk food here* just think of nasty blowout poopie diapers, carseats full of it etc. I should've taken a pic of it and posted it here..lmao!! :puke:

You're welcome! :D

:waving:

I thought that you would like that!!! :) Quite a few of the bonuses have been taken straight from your own words - water, protein, fibre leap to mind. With there having been a huge discussion over what was classed as junk - it made sense to incorporate the associated chat thread.

I think that a few of us are going to be finding this the most challenging one so far. I would have dropped points this week if it had been operating (Bailey's cheesecake leaps to mind) and last week come to that (carrot cake leaps to mind). These were both things that would not have been resisted for challenge points - much as the bread rolls weren't on Sunday and Monday.

Well make sure that you point out to David that I am giving points for up to 10 hours of exercise and you always liked getting a good proportion of the possible points.

I'm pleased that May has finally got things back to normal. I can imagine how apprehensive you would have been... It sounds like it went as well as you could possibly hope for.

LOL - Now - if it had been you or me we would have been straight on the scales the minute that we were cleaned up - to see if we were down a pound or two.

I hope that the memory helps you steer clear of chocolate etc this coming week. The sad thing is that chocolate isnt really forbidden for the challenge today - and you may have planned on having a little Friday night treat. The fresh memory might put you off....

posted some new pics of me in my before and after section on here as well as posted a pic in my diary of a motivational page i made for myself.

Scoresheet updated, for what it's worth.

Thanks Cord.

The main thing that it is worth is that we are all still together in this. The final number is so incidental it is silly.
