Weight-Loss Summer Shake-Up Challenge Chat Thread

Weight-Loss
Biobank is a project in the UK (funded by the government) where they are collecting health data (now and for the rest of our lives) regarding 500,000 adults in order to have data for a lot of research projects to use into the future. The data is all made anonymous but it means that a lot of genetic and health data is available for research to help future generations. We were asked to take part and decided to do so for the benefit of the people of those future generations. I have basically gifted my medical records to research.

We went along there today to have some tests done. I had never my percent of body fat measured so was quite interested to have it done there today. It was measured using a machine using electrical resistance - but it certainly was a lot more high tech than the bathroom scales that I have seen in shops which claim to calculate this.

Anyway my percent body fat came out as 21.7% and I was pretty pleased with that. It would appear (based on a quick scan of the internet) to be pretty decent for a 50 year old woman. They interpreted it as good.

My blood pressure was good, my lung function was good and my bone density was normal.

All in all the day is going pretty well! I have got some nice news and done my bit to save the world... :)

That all sounds pretty good. Nice to know that one is healthy. And 21.7% is a great BF% for your category.

I use the electrical impedance machine at my pharmacy. No idea how accurate it is, but as long as the reading continues to go down, I'm happy.

Earlier you asked me when I was going to be able to get a good weight reading for the challenge - probably not until Monday or Tuesday, sorry.
The fact that my work schedule can make it hard to weigh myself at the doctors at the times I want made me consider actually buying a scale, but my wife thought that it might make me obsess over the number and weigh myself 3 times a day. She may have a point. :)

I want to say thank you, thank you so much, for running this challenge. I have had some fun, made new friends, and learned a lot about balancing my diet and nutrition. It was great.

And I am also letting you know that I am running a September challenge - the MPH challenge. Check it out and I hope at least some of you feel like joining in.

LOL - and what makes you both think that you should be the only one not hopping on the scales at least 3 times a day and fully aware that if you paid another one last quick visit to the toilet before eating you may be able to get an even lower reading than the one you got a little while earlier... That is a way of life for some of us...

I want everyone to feel that they have had an opportunity to post a fair reading of their weight at the end of the challenge. I will therefore rule that any weight from today (Friday), Saturday, Sunday, Monday or Tuesday is acceptable for the end weight of the challenge. Daily weighers get to pick their best weight! (See - there are some benefits to ignoring all expert advice like some of us do shamelessly).

We can all relax after today and stop worrying about what new fruit or vegetables they could possibly eat or what I would ask them to do next.

They interpreted it as "good" but I must admit that I googled it the minute I got home to see what I could find out...

Thanks for your thanks. You are more than welcome... I enjoy making new friends too and it was lovely to have such great company on what was always destined to be a shaky couple of months for me. Sure I have gained a bit of weight - but I am convinced that I would have strayed from my normal program more and gained even more weight if I hadnt had to own up to the days that I did these things.

And I am also letting you know that I am running a September challenge - the MPH challenge. Check it out and I hope at least some of you feel like joining in.

I wish you luck in your challenge - but I will be giving it a miss.

Due to her having made upsetting and unwarranted comments to me in the past - I never enter a thread where RunningGirl is an active participant.

I can't believe today is the last day of the challenge. It seemed like it was going to go on forever..lol

I made an awesome soup today that was very challenge friendly--should've made it weeks ago..lol. It contained lean beef, lentils, navy beans, broccoli, carrot, celery, tomato, corn, grean beans, peas, garlic, onion, chicken stock and a bunch of spices. Needless to say, it helped me to fulfill my veggie, bean, protein, dif colored veg requirements. If only I could've thrown some exercise into the pot!! :biggrinjester:

Anyway, it's been a good challenge. Wish I could've kept the calories lower and lost weight instead of gaining it, but oh well. :nopity:

That sounds like a brilliant soup.

I toyed with giving points for calorie counting towards the end - but took the attitude that everyone already is aware about limiting their calories but a lot of people are not nearly so aware of the other things that we covered. Pretty much the only obvious thing that we covered that everyone would be aware of was junk food and at the end it became obvious that many of us were giving ourselves a little too much latitude in that direction. I knew that I was.

Weighed in also, not as good as I'd hoped, but it was still a negative number so I'll take it.

Thanks for a, umm... challenging challenge!

Just a reminder that today is the last day for filling in the scoresheets for the challenge - and I will happily do the sums tomorrow.

I managed to weigh in "in zone" today - which was all I really wanted to get out of the challenge (and a bit of a miracle) - so am hereby resigning from the challenge...

Woo-hoo!

You da man, Karl!

Although I really think Margaret should include herself in the rankings, and not resign. She worked as hard (or harder) than the rest of us.

Karl did brilliantly and fully deserved to win first place. I always considered myself as a bit of a pace setter in this race and there to enjoy the journey with all of you. I always had an advantage because I knew what was coming next.

It was lovely to have your company while I learn more about maintenance.

Congrats to the winners!! :)

I didn't actually update my scoresheet for last week....sorry about that. Haven't been feeling well and slacking in every aspect. And I didn't realise it was the last week of the challenge.

I managed to get below my goal weight though, so that's worth something.

Again, congrats to the winners, you deserve it!! :hurray:

Margaret, The fact of the matter is that the only reason I pushed as hard as I did was because every week there was this this lady known as Omega who kept being one step ahead of me... Please stay in touch and keep us informed on how maintenance goes for you. You've worked really hard to get where you are and have inspired all of us by being a live success story that we can all relate to. I think all of us can see a bit of ourselves in you. Where you are now, is where we would like to be, and hearing about what you are going through helps us by giving us a little insight into what it will be like when we get there.

It was a great challenge. What was cool is that it looked like there were a bunch of people, Cord, Kimberly, San, etc. who really worked hard. I was glad to be a part of it.

Well done for getting below your goal weight. That is brilliant! Every one of us only came to the forum in the first place because we were concerned about our weight issues... The fact that you have lost the weight that you hoped to lose is wonderful.

I am sorry to hear that you have been feeling unwell. You have had a tough time recently on project between illness, trips to Germany and school holiday diversions (e.g. amusement park outings which sound truly tempting).

It is a shame that your final score does not reflect your work done last week - but I did have to draw a line eventually and I did remind everyone on Tuesday in this thread that it really was the last day for updating things...

You have done so well with your project that I am sure that the slacking is a very temporary thing. It will not be long before you are in maintenance too.

Karl - I have to say that I do not use the combined terms of "firm nutritional control" and "exercise fiend" about too many people - but I would use them BOTH about you. It has been great getting to know you better. In most challenges - all you see about other people is how much weight they are losing and how they are feeling. You get less appreciation of the level of hard work that they are putting in. You are working hard and WILL make your weight loss dreams come true very soon.
