Running: A New Endeavor

Yeah dude. Be safe, but push yourself. I think that's smart. As for this storm, I just got to work in time, and it's starting to fall. Couldn't this have happened during the week so it would have cancelled school?!

My wife is supposed to fly home tonight so who knows when she'll be home

Did squats, bench, rows today. My strength is slowly coming back. I felt a slight twinge in those knee ligaments on my last set of squats. I'm going to start icing after lifting too.

Well since we have nearly a foot of snow I guess I won't be running today...

Shovelling snow is definitely cardio (not that I know:D). A lot of folks die from overexertion and heart attacks every year shovelling snow

As an FYI, I wore my HR monitor when I was shoveling last year (because I'm a really big geek). I was surprised at how low my HR stayed, even as I felt like I was exerting myself and sweating and everything. It still counts as a work-out, but the pattern mirrored more of a high-rep/low weight endurance strength training session than cardio.

you're right...that is a tad geeky ;) Something I'd probably do. Geeks unite!:D

LOL, Do you wear a mask when you mow the grass too?;)

Grass? What's grass? That stuff you get in May when all the white stuff finally melts?

Nah. My next quest is to get a GPS pod to work at the rink where I play hockey so I can see a log of my skating distance per week.

Well, obviously trying to work through this pain has been counterproductive. The distance I can go before I have to stop and limp home gets considerably less each time. I couldn't even run a mile today. I'm taking the rest of the week off.

From what I've been reading, it sounds exactly like Iliotibial Band Syndrome. How could this happen almost immediately after I started running?

Update: I found some rehabilitation stretches and exercises that are supposed to help for this. We'll see how it goes. The only bad thing is that I'll have to buy some of those girly resistance bands for one of the exercises. Maybe I'll have my wife buy them so I won't be embarrassed:p

I've been doing these the last couple days:

It feels great, like I'm correcting some weaknesses I've always had in my knees (I'm doing all the exercises on both legs)

I feel like a big turd because this is all I'm doing for maybe the rest of the week, but this obviously needed to be addressed....hell maybe I'll see if I can handle a short run later this week

Yeah, unfortunately seeing a specialist in this area may take months, then it's an all day affair in the waiting room...but I might get desperate enough

Today I was able to run about twice what I ran Friday so I'm at least going in the right direction now. The stretches are helping and I started using a massager (no, not that kind LOL) on it whenever I think about it

It's getting better. I started alternating between my elliptical and running because the machine is easier on my knee and I can get sufficient cardio. My runs are slowly getting longer with the new stretches and massages. I also ordered an IT band brace that will hopefully be very temporary.

Thanks,

Want to hear a strange one? Ice actually made it feel worse. There were a couple times I had just a little nagging pain and after I iced it I could barely walk
