Running: A New Endeavor

Well, I think my leg is in great shape now. I'm slowly adding distance on my runs and I signed up for 2 more races just for fun. One's next weekend and one is June 7. They're both just 5K, but longer races are fewer and farther between

these short races can get ya. ie: I planned to run 8 flats at that 4 miler trail race. I was also planning to take off cold. BUT, I was soo antsy and the race was short enough, and BOTH you and I are in good enough shape we have endurance to burn. I did a warm up run,, about 20 minutes- 2 miles... then I stretched, and then raced. ended up with 7:33's I WAS SHOCKED!!!! 27 seconds per mile is HUGE!

I came out of the start very strong, and then realized my legs had no warm up to make, they were ready to rock and roll.

Race dynamics are such that you will get comfortable and take off, and hammer those legs,,, it's fine for a mile or two, but going into mile 3 you may experience a lil hammy trouble.

IN YOUR case, and MINE, screw everybody else... As long as you are doing these short races, a warm up run, and little bit pof stretching my be a good idea.

Be careful of dynamic stretching on a race day. You will have added nervouis adrenaline and tension on race mornings. SO, a 11-12 munte mile or two, and then a nice slow static stretch for your parts.

you made it thru the curve man!!

Runners Rule!

FF,

Just wanted to put my placemark here...I took your suggestion and read every page of this journal.

I've already got some good Asics running shoes...so I'm set there...BUT reading G-man's journal I'm worried: I'm 10 years older, about 50 pounds heavier and I'm recovering from my blown-up left knee. WTF am I thinking trying to pick-up running???? I think I'll just goof-off on the gym's treadmill for quite some time before I consider getting serious about trying to be a runner. Me run, sheesh! :D Until I can do an hour on the treadmill I ain't nothin'

Still researching....

Keep up the good work Gooch! :)

yay Gooch! You're doing great! Don't get discouraged, we've all been there. Good luck!

Thanks, I take your advice to heart, Todd.

Sparrow, I refuse to get discouraged...ok, maybe momentarily sometimes, but I get over it!;)

BSL, I never thought in a million years I'd be doing this. I thought I'd never be able to run. I grew up with severe asthma and I've had knee pain for several years. Now that I forced myself to do it I feel better than ever! I don't know if I can call myself a real runner yet, but I won't even consider not becoming one now.

Anyway today is my 7th wedding anniversary, so hopefully I won't be too tired for my run tomorrow:D

We're going to go out and have a nice steak in a few hours....see you guys tomorrow!!

Gooch,

I'll continue to run on the treadmill and see how long, far and intense I can get it. I really think I need to slim-down and get thinner; big husky lumberjacks just aren't meant to run and looking at you & MarkMy I can see a vast difference in our builds. I dunno, it's like trying to get a Cadillac to carve canyon roads like a Porsche....I'll do what I can and bitch to FF about the rest. :D

Thanks for the inspiration...:)

I weighed about 220 a year and a half ago (actually my highest was 227 fully clothed)

At 6'1 that might not exactly be "lumberjackish" LOL but my point is you can transform your body if that's what you want.

Interesting. I suppose I've just had too many people suggesting to me that my lack of having a runner's build will inhibit me from becoming a runner...almost to the point of "don't bother trying" and "running is high impact, don't do it"...especially with the knee issue.

As for "transforming my body"....yes: I want to be thinner/leaner and overall more attractive. As for the large chest & big arms, seems a lot of woman like that. I dunno, I don't want to lose muscle but I want to be lighter....but I don't want to look like a slinky. Ya know those guys who pass me on the trail, they're all legs & lungs....their upper-body is just wimpy. Just seems the best runners are light-weights...far from what I am. I dunno....but at the "here & now"...I want to lose more weight, lose more fat and find a way to participate (not necessarily compete) in a triathlon.

and I weighed over 200, down from 240 with a 46 inch waiste, when I did the SanDiego Marathon in the 90's. hmmmmm

next excuse?

You were 240 with a 46" waist and you ran 27 miles??????????? That's like suggesting a scrawny little guy can bench 500 pounds! I hate to use the word "inconceivable"...but damn!!!!!

So now that you've lost weight & trained, what do you do.....sprint the marathon?

I think too many runners just neglect weight lifting and don't care to eat enough to not waste away. I have no intention of developing pipe cleaner arms LOL. I'm not saying you're likely to look like Ronnie Coleman and run marathons, but you can look muscular and athletic.

Have you seen Lance Armstrong lately? He's started running marathons now and he's put on muscle mass. He's not so skinny anymore

....anyway....

I'm pumped today!!!

I can finally run to fatigue, not just until my knee starts hurting. It doesn't hurt anymore!!!

I ran my 5 mile course yesterday. It was pissing down rain and my legs were kinda sore....yet I beat my last 5 mile time by more than 2 minutes.

I also solved my recent fatigue problem. It was pretty basic; now that I'm running I simply need more sleep. I was getting 6.5 to 7 hours, now I'm getting 8 to 8.5

I simply need more sleep. I was getting 6.5 to 7 hours, now I'm getting 8 to 8.5

Good for you Gooch, funny how that works. I too now force myself to rest & relax...as much as it feels macho & on-the-power to push ourselves hard, it's equally as important to rest & fuel.

I too had similar issues because I was certain I had to eat as little as I could tolerate...ya know, thinking it would force my body to burn the fat (burn baby, burn). Nowadays, I eat more before my workouts, during the workout and between transitions (swimming/spinining/running). I notice my calorie-burn is up, I feel warmer and the engine is more stoked...seems like the whole thermogenic thing is going on and I seem to be leaning-out faster/better then when I just ran 24/7 on low-cal's....and equally important is the sleep!!!

Keep up the good work, glad the knee isn't troubling you anymore! :)

I ran a 5K today. I'm not breaking any land speed records, but I'm getting better. I ran just over 10 minute mile pace...30:35

Organized..."End Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy 5K" .

Doesn't 5K equal 3.1 miles, so I did about 10 min, 11 sec per mile?

My neighborhood has super steep hills, so here I do 12 min miles, but I'm a little faster on more flat ground...still a long way to go. My longest run so far is 6 miles. I hoped to be further along by now, but I dealt with that damn IT band for a couple months. I'm just coming out of it. I'll worry about speed when I can build up to more miles

Yes, a 5k is 3.1 miles. Your pace was 9 mins 52 secs per mile. That is a nice run for as long as you have been at it. Congrats! Keep it up!

Duh, I went to public school LOL. My math was bad.

Sweet, you're right, I did better than 10 mm, I just now calculated it (correctly)

Of course!! LOL THANKS G8R80!!!

That's a mistake I'm glad to see pointed out:)

How is your recovery going? You'd probably smoke me right now wouldn't you?:yelrotflmao:
