Running: A New Endeavor

All this garmin **** is like big brother. How do you know some character in the cia isnt tracking your every movement and using your superior training program to his advantage?

OK!!!

you can out run me, out bike me, and look better in a thong than me!
you can take my affections and toss them about!
you can team up on me and make me snivel, or even cause me to cry!
shoot, you can even klick me in the nards!!!

BUT-
don't go messin wit da brownies!
STOP RIGHT THERE AND STEP THE HECK BACK FROM THE BROWNIES - sista!

mmmmmmmmm I did like it when you said decadent though.

I've been thinking the last several days about where to go with my training and right now I'm enjoying 5K running. I think I'm going to work on being the best 5K runner I can be instead of grunting out more and more slow-as-molasses miles. Maybe I'll want to do something different down the line, but like I said, I'm enjoying trying to improve times and seeing real growth...not to mention the plethora of opportunities to compete. I can run an organized 5K almost every weekend if I want.

I have mentioned before that I live and train in a really hilly neighborhood. Well, a week ago I was running about 11:27 pace here. Today I broke 10 min pace for the first time. 3.14 miles in 30:49 (9:50 pace) Maybe when I get below 30 min I'll start running a 10K on the weekend and start conquering getting faster at that.

Gooch, you (and me) are still in the "base building" stage. Gotta pay our dues with these slowa$$ miles before we can get faster or go farther. I'll bet you'll break 25 minutes in 3 months at the rate you are progressing.

5K is a great distance and you don't have to go farther. In fact, it is the standard distance for a sprint triathlon so if you add swimming and cycling, you will be ready for a sprint tri.

I just realized I'm starting to be able to push myself instead of just hoping I finish without running out of steam.

At my second to last 5K I noticed a guy with an Ironman tattoo on his calf. I talked to him a little and he said he discovered he liked the shorter races more and that's pretty much all he did now (he ended up winning with something crazy like a 6 min pace) so maybe I might feel the same way, but who knows I might just feel the desire to finish at lest one marathon. I'm at the point where I can run about 8 miles, but it's at an average pace of about 12 min. If I'm going to run a marathon one day I don't want to be out there all day LOL

I have find I need some good as music to get me to really push it hard on the last parts of the run. You should do the new york marathon man thats my dream as well.

Just out of curiousity whats your weight doing?

I'm still able to manipulate my weight either way with calorie changes. I've never noticed a huge difference when I'm doing a lot of running or very little. I have a very high metabolism either way. I shift between 3600 and 4200 per day

Awesome, the only problem is I keep wearing out my foam rollers. They just don't hold their shape very long. I'm considering a length of large PVC pipe for my next "foam roller"

Can you recommend a specific type/brand that might hold its shape longer? I've had 2 "Go Fit" ones that you can buy in stores (I think I got one at D ick's sporting Goods and one at Target of all places) and my second one is now showing signs that its about to collapse

OK, say I want to do two 5Ks during the week and one long run on the weekend. I'm up to about 8.5 miles for a long run. If my pace for the 5K is currently 9:50, what pace should I shoot for for the "long" run?

How hard are you working at 9:50? If hard, try 9:20 or 9:30 on the longer run. If not real hard, try maintaining the 9:50 pace for the longer run.

That 9:50 is as hard as I can push myself at the moment on the terrain I train on....wait a minute, you're telling me to run faster for the long run? Did you mean 10:20, 10:30?

I'm an idiot! Yes, I meant 10:20 or 10:30. When I drop :30 off my pace, it seems like a big drop off, so that would be a good starting point.

Good luck!

ok boys! I know I have teased about the gadgets and such lately, but i truly was just teasing.... SO with that in mind let's get serious about this "new" runner for a second....

please ditch the gadgets.

let's think of effort and time and develop the unique complex system commonly known as 'the gooch"

work on continuing your development as a RUNNER.

What we have here is a total understanding of the body and how is should be able to run (g8r80) and a body/brain that is actually doing the running (gooch).

The brain develops, and the body develops, and rarely at the same time or rate of improved performance...

I may not have body or brain, but I can run. SO- try this Gooch-

go out today and run what feels like your 1/2 effort. We will refer to that at RPE 3-5. you can say short swentences, or sing song lyrics and not become totally winded.

Go out, run that pace, and report back about how long you could keep it comfortably. One of two things will happen.

At some point during your run you will start to "rev up" and want to stress your body with faster running, or you will get tighter and tighter and want to walk. The response does nto matter, just go and run to that place at an RPE 3-5, and then report back how long it takes to get there.

FF

edit : I mean to say this-

Go run at your 50% effort and see how long you can do it. Let's see if you have 60 minutes in you.

ok, I just spent nearly an hour trying to help my lady run better. Somehow in her mind she thougth that when you run you have one foot land in front of the other, like in a straight line.

just in case you or any other readers of this are over compensating on your stride, stop that. It messes with you 'strike' and everythign else. not good for hips, almost inmpossble to keep knees bent, and on and on I can go.

the onlky time to put heel in front of toe is for a field sobreity test. Let your hips decide thje width of your stride, and relax baby relax... she picked up a minute a mile easy... but that's not hard when you are going grom 19 mm to 18 mm miles LOL!!! ok, it;'s not that bad,... hehehehee

I wuv my woman!

I traveled most of today. I'm at my sister's in South Bend IN. I'l probably go for a run in the morning. I think my long runs have been at at least 50% effort and I've gone for well over an hour. I guess I just forget how new I am and want to progress faster.

My new running legs were feeling overtrained so I took a few days off from everything and I'll see how I feel now.
